About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms , 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

I restored the bones of a cottage built in 1828 in the quiet and picturesque village of Tarpum Bay.It is an escape from a busy life in Northern Michigan. The Culmer House is just perfect for what I wanted: it's in a quiet fishing village with friendly neighbors and a beautiful view of the ocean. The cottage is just steps from the beach, up on a little hill where we catch the cool breezes and escape the sand flies. Grocery and small local restaurants are very close.

The cottage is perfect for people who'd like to relax and read, paint, fish, swim, snorkel the beautiful reefs, and explore uncrowded beaches. Eleuthera Island has more beautiful public beaches than you will ever manage to visit in one stay! . Spend your Thanksgiving or Christmas holidays celebrating the Bahamian way in Eleuthera! Or enjoy a peaceful, safe vacation any time.

About Lynn Larson

I am a retired educator, and have traveled the world. I selected Eleuthera as my winter home. I enjoy being part of a local Bahamian community, and contributing to this island and its friendly people whenever and however I can.

Lynn Larson purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Lynn Larson chose Tarpum Bay

I live in Northern Michigan--beautiful in summer, but cold and snowy in the winter. I wanted a place to escape that is warm, and safe, with friendly people, beautiful scenery, sunshine, and clear water. Eleuthera is an amazing island--110 miles long and an average of 2 miles wide with beautiful uncrowded public beaches everywhere. I enjoyed restoring this old ruin in the middle of a settlement. Tarpum Bay is quiet-- and not 'touristy. It is well located for travel to all parts of the island.

What makes this cottage unique

The Culmer Cottage is perfect for people who want to live an easy life. The cottage has little upkeep, and has decks for sunshine and cool ocean breezes. The ocean view is spectacular and because it is not directly on the beach, there are NO sand fleas! The beach and public fishing dock are a half-block away, and the little grocery and take-away restaurants are just out the back door. My Bahamian neighbors are friendly, helpful, and welcoming to visitors. Churches are close by, and there are readily available rental cars and mopeds. Tarpum Bay is just 6 miles from the airport and the slightly larger community of Rock Sound, and the island capital, bustling Governors Harbour, is 20 miles to the north.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Four of us rented Culmer Cottage for a week. We are all adults and wanted a different kind of vacation than our usual five star experience. This self contained house was perfect. It's location allowed us to travel up and down the island to visit all the isolated, beautiful beaches. We would have like to have a dishwasher, but Brenda and Kervin cooked wonderful meals and cleaned up afterwards. The cottage is very clean and comfortable. It was nice to stay in a Bahamian community and see every day life on a quiet island. All the residents were warm, friendly and helpful.

clean, historical, quaint

  • 5 of 5

This house was reconstructed from an old ruin, the kind you see in so many places all over the island. The owner saw the good bones did a great job of rebuilding, and added lots of personal touches inside. It has everything you need to have a comfortable stay, is very clean, and has great sea views and breezes. Living in a town instead of being isolated on the beach gives one a really different perspective of Eleuthera. The citizens are so friendly; grocery, small restaurants and gas stations are close by. It is fun to stroll around town. At the same time, beaches are everywhere and easy to find. Some of the beach roads are challenging, but if you go slow, the end of the trip is worth it. I have never seen such beautiful beaches, and most are deserted. I will be back to Culmer Cottage, and Eleuthera, I hope!

Charming comfortable well located

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at Culmer Cottage several times. I obviously enjoy it. The native neighbors are friendly and greet me warmly. The house is in the middle of a settlement which I like because everything is convenient. Groceries and the fish dock and Rock Sound airport are close by. The house is very clean and well equipped. It feels more like a home then a rental as the owner has nice art work and personal artifacts to admire.

She is a big help in preparing visitors for what to bring, and expect. She gives suggestions of what to do. Once you arrive there is a big notebook of maps, restaurants, trip ideas.

The caretakers, Kervin and Brenda are very helpful.

Culmer Cottage has great views, and there is always a good breeze from the sea. I will keep coming back!

Long stay great experience!

  • 5 of 5

My family including myself my husband and two daughters stayed here for two full months! Lynn is amazing. She sent me such a comprehensive information about the town the schools and really helped us get oriented to what we would need before we arrived. The cottage is right in the middle of town and a great location. It is close to the beach the grocery store and even a restaurant. The town is humble but extremely safe and even though residents are all around at all times they are the kindest most considerate people on earth. This house truly put you in the heart of the real Bahamas and I highly recommend to stay here. The house is simple but clean and well maintained and the accommodations are comfortable while simple.

Owner's Response: Dear Allison, So happy you enjoyed Culmer Cottage and appreciated the charm of living within a community in Eleuthera. It is so different than plopping on a beach and never knowing citizens. The neighbors loved having you there Too! Thanks for sharing your experience.

A perfect centralized beach house!

  • 5 of 5

My girlfriend and I stayed here for the week of Thanksgiving. It was exactly the tropical getaway we were looking for, relaxing yet adventurous at the same time! The house is perfectly setup with 2 full bathrooms, comfortable furniture/beds, kitchen that has everything needed for cooking and a gorgeous balcony view! Having internet and cable was nice too, even were able to watch Thanksgiving football. Over the course of a week we visited 10 beaches all less than an 45 minutes north or south of Lynn's home. There is Bert's grocery right across the street that is a great little convenience store and then a larger grocery store in Rock Sound about 10-15 mins away. There are numerous good restaurants close by (Dolphin Blow Hole, Barbies and the bayside conch salad just down the hill) were all great. Lynn also has a binder full of different activities and places to see on Eleuthera. The most helpful was her beach book that made getting to very remote beaches much easier. The handwritten directions and tips were also incredibly helpful. Thanks so much for providing a great getaway and we cannot wait to go back!

Our Tropical Christmas

  • 3 of 5

The 4 of us just spent a most fabulous vacation on Eleuthera. For two weeks we stayed in the historic Culmer Cottage . We fished most every morning. ( The locals would laughingly tease us, as we most often returned home with no fish for breakfast ) There is a grocery store a block from the house as well as 2 great restaurants you can walk too.

We would spend the rest of our days exploring different attractions all over the Islands; from Harbour Island, to Lighthouse Beach, to The Hatchet Bay Caves, to Fish Fry Friday Nights', to finding jaw-dropping, postcard worthy, deserted and secluded beaches, with reefs, ship-wrecks, and docks left over from yester-year.

For us we found the bone fishing to be better on the south side of the Island. Staying in Tarpun Bay was very central. We bought fish and crab and lobster from the dock, just a block away from the house . Rock Sound has a large grocery store and liquor store ( nothing like cold Kalik Beer !) Being on the Island for Junkanoo was a parade with costumes and music, like I've never seen before in my whole life !

There are plenty windows to open in the house and let the sea breeze thru, which keeps the house from getting too hot. I had very comfortable sleeps. Our Internet Connection worked very well.

The house was unfortunately not set up well for cooking our own meals. Culmer Cottage is a cute old house in a little fishing settlement, filled with many colourful locals we won't soon forget.
