Overview

About the property

1 bedroom, 1 full bathroom, sleeps 6

Our cozy family cottage has 100' of private waterfront on beautiful Torch Lake. The cottage has housed our family visits to Torch Lake for generations, and we'd like to share our little escape with others. Torch Lake is considered one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and with one look into the crystal clear blue water you'll see why. We are fortunate to have a very gradual increase in depth for several hundred feet out into the water, creating a striking sight where the drop-offs signal the deeper blue depths of Torch. We have a dock that extends almost 90' out to the lake, with a 12'x12' platform at the end for enjoying some time in the sun. At the end of the dock it's not even 3' deep! Just down the road is the Torch River Bridge, near the famous Torch Lake Sandbar and Torch River. Just across the lake is the town of Alden.

We're making frequent updates to the cottage and the property. In 2009 we made significant renovations, completely modernizing the kitchen, bathroom, and living areas (but taking care to retain the old cottage look and feel). In 2014, a clothes dryer and mooring anchor were added. And in 2015, we rebuilt the stone wall on the lakeshore and added sand to our small beach area out front.

Golf Information: There are a number of top golf courses in the area, including designs by Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Gary Player. Some of the more popular locations include Shanty Creek Resorts with 'The Legend', designed by Arnold Palmer, as well as 3 other courses and Grand Traverse Resort & Spa with 'The Bear' by Jack Nicklaus and 'The Wolverine' by Gary Player.

Boating Information: Torch Lake is a great place to water-ski, go tubing, and do all sorts of other water sports. We have a 90'' long dock that can be used to access boats, although the water is still shallow at the end! Public accesses are close by. We have a mooring anchor that can be used, and local nearby marinas also offer overnight slip and trailered storage options that our guests have used.

Area Festivals: Harbor Days --- Interlochen Summer Arts Festival --- Petoskey Festival on the Bay --- Suttons Bay Art Festival --- Northport-Leelanau Peninsula Wine And Food Festival --- Suttons Bay Jazzfest --- Charlevoix Venetian Festival --- just to name a few!!

About Brett

I've been going to the cottage since I was 6 months old, and spent entire summers there growing up. I am no longer able to spend such long periods of time at the lake, but the cottage and surrounding area have a very special place in my life, and hopefully will in my children's lives as well. The swimming, boating, campfires, exploring, wildlife, and nonstop summer activities all around the area can keep you busy all day every day!

Brett purchased this cottage in 1936

Why Brett chose Torch Lake

My great-great-aunt built the cottage in 1936 and our family has visited every year since. It's been our little slice of heaven! After completing some VERY significant remodeling work in 2009, including a completely new kitchen, new bathroom, refinished wood floors, new electrical work, and so much more, we decided to make the cottage available for rent, to share our escape with others.

What makes this cottage unique

There are two amazing experiences every time we go to the cottage. First, driving over Torch River Bridge and seeing the lake for the first time that year. The sight of the seemingly infinite shades of blue sparkling water is breathtaking. Second, when arriving at the cottage, the scent of the pine trees that surround the property. My wife has said that the view from the kitchen window (of the lake immediately in front of the cottage) almost makes you WANT to do the dishes! There is so much to do in the area that it was my own personal summer camp growing up (fishing, swimming, boating, hiking...). The area towns are great places to visit, and there are many great restaurants as well. We now have a long drive each summer to make it to the cottage (about 15 hours) but wouldn't miss it for the world. Our kids love it and don't stop talking about it year-round!

Notes:
Brand new kitchen! Completely renovated 2009. All wood floors in the kitchen/main room have been refinished. All new kitchen cabinets, large kitchen island with seating, and counter tops. All new appliances: range, microwave, and fridge. New sink & fixtures. Cabinets and island were installed with very custom & professional wood trim work. We accomplished a lot that year (new kitchen, new bathroom, painted outside, refinished floors, new furnishings, etc). We've spent a lot of time and effort to modernize the property and make it a fantastic getaway destination. Everything was done with the highest care for quality craftsmanship and it shows!! We also have a private dock (almost 90' long!) right outside our front door with a large 12'x12' platform at the end. Note: Fireplace is not to be used at this time. Mooring anchor available and local overnight boat dockage nearby.

Fantastic!!

My wife and I were looking for a relaxing getaway and this place was perfect. The lake was great and crystal clear. We rented 2 kayaks for the week and really enjoyed the morning outings. We highly recommend this cottage and Brett was great to work with. We can't wait to go back

The Most Beautiful View and Peaceful Too

  • 5 of 5

We were fortunate enough to spend a week in the Torch Lake Cottage and absolutely loved the beautiful view from all the windows, and better yet, on the decks. Such a peaceful setting, among trees and on gorgeous Torch Lake. During our week long stay we enjoyed taking walks, eating several of our meals out on the deck, taking a boat ride on Torch Lake, the Torch River, and Elk Lake, driving around the scenic area, and eating out at great restaurants like Pearl's. The hosts do everything possible to make your stay memorable, enjoyable, and peaceful and provide a great list of area attractions and restaurants. We went to area orchards, several small art galleries, spent time browsing and shopping in Traverse City, Charlevoix, and Elk Rapids, went on the mushroom house tour in Charlevoix, and even went ziplining at Wild Wood Rush in Boyne City, as everything was just 15 to 60 minutes away. Super clean cottage is well maintained with spacious lake frontage that is more than ample to provide privacy, peace, and quiet while enjoying beautiful sunrises. Thanks for a great stay!

Vintage Classic Nicely Updated

  • 4 of 5

We had a perfect week at the cottage, even with rain the lake is magical! The cottage was quaint and comfortable, even with our family of five! Kids loved the bunks! Had everything we needed. Loved the living area around the fireplace with its tall ceilings, not something you often see in an older cottage. Really loved the little sandy cove along the lakeshore, beautifully shaded by the big tree's, lots of lovely stones! Loved the big deck and long dock. Swimming is great here! The color of the water is stunning! Great location, close to stores and the cute town of Alden!

Perfect for our much needed family getaway

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our Torch Lake getaway, to the envy of all our friends and family. The cabin was a perfect destination for our family of 4. It felt like such a private getaway! The access to the water was incredible- great platform at the end of the long dock. Cabin was very clean, and spacious enough for us when we spent a rain day inside! Complete with outside firepit and grill, there is plenty of outdoor seating for reading, relaxing and taking in the view, which cannot be beat! A guest book in the cabin reads like a fascinating novel and it was fun to check out the places of interest previous guests recommended. The location can't be beat for checking out the Northwestern part of the Lower Pennisula. So thankful this family has made their family vacation house available for others. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Cozy lakeside home with a lot of character in all the right places.

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay here for our honeymoon. Clean linens and towels, excellent instructions and accessibility. We loved the dock, firepit, and rock beach for skipping stones. Ample dry stacked wood for burning.

If I had to nitpick I would say it is very tedious to warm the home. Near 40 degrees on a cold mid may day and night. Hours of work from 4 tiny heaters that could barely keep up. Water heater set too low to give more than 10 minutes of a warm shower as well. Otherwise perfect and everything we were looking for.

Nice little cottage on the water that had everything we needed. We enjoyed a couple of fires in the outdoor fire pit while looking at the beautiful lake. Many great restaurants and bars nearby.
