About Tom and Peggy O'Malley
Talk about local history with the current owners, Peggy and Tom O'Malley, who were both born in Atascadero. Tom grew up next door in a house built by his father in the 1940's. Tom's first job was working in the 'Colony Orchard' at the historic home right next door. The main house was built for Harry and Minnie Peterson in 1927 by Russell Pysher, the brother-in-law of Minnie Peterson. He was also the head carpenter at the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena for most of his career. Harry was one of the first businessmen in Atascadero and Minnie was a local artist. Some of her work is now on display at this home along with paintings of local scenes painted by Tom's grandmother, mother and other local artists. Ironwork in the living room and dining room was created by Edward Trinkeller, a craftsman who worked on Hearst Castle. Peggy and Tom continue the tradition of using local craftsmen to faithfully restore, maintain and expand their home. For example, local artist Mark Greenaway created the many wayfinding signs in use around the property.
Tom and Peggy O'Malley purchased this Cottage in 1995
Why Tom and Peggy O'Malley chose Atascadero
We bought this property as our family home in 1995 because of its beautiful location and interesting local and personal history. We love living in Atascadero as well as being close to so many great places to explore: To the north we have; Hearst Castle - 45 min., Cambria/Cayucos - 35 min., Morro Bay - 20 min., Paso Robles - 10 min., Historic Templeton - 5 min. To the south we have; San Luis Obispo/Cal Poly - 20 min., Avila & Pismo Beaches - 30 min., Los Olivos, Buelton,Solvang - 1 hour & 15 min. We are also located about 1/2 hour from several lakes: Nacimiento, San Antonio, Santa Margarita, and Lopez. Because of our interest in California History we are pleased to be close to three of the original California Missions; San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, San Miguel de Archangel, and San Antonio de Padua.

Charming and Peaceful
A lovely spot for a weekend visit. We woke to the birdies chirping happily under the gorgeous oaks... quite magical!
Our kids moved to this area 2 1/2 years ago, and whenever we visit, we like to rent a place for ourselves. This one is usually booked, but we got lucky again so this is our second stay at the Portola Guest House. The setting is absolutely beautiful, and our little grandkids love playing and exploring in the yard.
Tom is a wonderful host and does everything he can to make our stay comfortable. We will always look here first when we’re planning a trip to Atascadero!
Beautiful location, warm hospitality
We needed a place to stay for a month between selling our home in LA and moving in to our new home in Atascadero. We couldn't have found a more perfect property -- and host -- for our needs. This guest house is standalone and equipped with everything we needed for a lengthy stay -- fully stocked, washer and dryer, plenty of parking -- and sits on gorgeous acreage with oaks, well landscaped grounds, and carefully tended gardens. After a long and complicated move, waking up to a view of majestic oaks outside our deck made it all worthwhile. To top it off, we couldn't have asked for a better host. Tom was quick to welcome us, accommodating of our schedule, and happy to offer insights and suggestions about our new neighborhood. We hope to count him as a friend long after we've moved into our new home up the road.
What a sweet surprise! Private getaway with charm and lots of green around!
Dogs and kids friendly! Huge property in the middle of wine county amongst mature oak trees. 20 minutes to Morro Bay, 10 to Paso Robles. Awesome zoo is right next to Portola road. Very accomodating hosts. You are gonna love it!
