Year Purchased: 2008
About the owner: In the fall of 2007, we visited this wonderful property and it was love at first sight. Six months later we became the proud owners. We presently live in the San Francisco Bay Area. But in the 1980’s, we made our home in Aix-en-Provence. Our children enjoyed living in France as much as we did and it became obvious to us that someday we would have to come back. For over 30 years, Jacques worked in the High Tech Industry and traveling the world was part of his job. Since we have a French background (we are bilingual) and loved living in the South of France, we decided that this would be an ideal place to buy a big old house. We also thought that we would like to share it with others but in that case it would have to be really special in terms of comfort. After purchasing this property, we furnished it with authentic Provencal furniture, using classical colors and materials along with a touch of high tech and a bit of a California flair. The combination is unique for the region.
Why the Owner Chose St-Martin-de-Crau, France:
People from all over the word agree that the South of France is an amazing place. The weather is exceptionally beautiful. The air smells of sun and lavender. Our home is only a short drive away from some of the most picturesque villages in Provence. Worth mentioning are Les Baux de Provence, the famous fortified village of the XIV century as well as Saint Remy de Provence, where Vincent Van Gogh painted, and where Nostradamus, the Middle Age visionaries was born. To the south of the house is the 2000-year-old city of Arles, which is famous for Roman baths, an amphitheater, and an arena. Arles is also the capital of the Camargue region, an area well known for the white wild horse and bullfights. We love this region because there is easy access to an International Airport in Marseille, the fast TGV trains to Paris and the auto routes. You can sit at the pool or go to the beach. You can fix a simple meal in the kitchen, drink a cup of espresso in a village square or eat at a 3-star restaurant. You can visit Roman archeological sites or shop for the latest fashions. But the appeal is also a beautiful 300-year-old stone farmhouse on 25 acres and surrounded by 1500 acres of open space.
The Unique Benefits at this Chateau / Country House:
In addition to sight seeing, this area offer a tremendous opportunity for bicycling, hiking, climbing and of course eating. Wonderful French cuisine and wines can be found in the surrounding towns and villages. Local wineries welcome visitors all during the year and olive groves that produce the best oil in all of France are abundant in this area. In Provence, there is something to do during every season of the year. Among those things are festivals and musical events. Visitors will find that our home provides world class lodging and yet remains a very comfortable place for families and friends to gather together and relax.
