About Aileen

Living at the Jersey Shore, we longed for a winter retreat. One trip to Costa Rica and we were hooked! We purchased a beach area lot and a couple of years later we saw this property. Once

Aileen purchased this cabin in 2006

Why Aileen chose San José

We loved the serenity of the mountains, the beautiful views from any location, the plethora of exotic birds, butterflies, and other animals including monkeys, and the incredible starry nights. We decided a couple of years in that we wanted to share this natural beauty with other visitors so the real Costa Rica would be known .

What makes this cabin unique

This is the 'other' Costa Rica, far away from busy tourist towns. If pure, abundant nature is what you are after, this is your spot. You'll feel like you are floating above the clouds when you awake and will stay in a Pura Vida mode the entire stay. Guests are welcome to enjoy the fruit from our many fruit trees. Fresh Costa Rica coffee is brewed each morning and enjoy a traditional Tico breakfast before you begin your daily adventures (add'l fee pp).

What an incredible experience. It felt that, for the first time in a long while, we had a chance to properly relax, switch off and enjoy the natural beauty that rural Costa Rica has to offer. We stayed at the Rancho for a duration for a month and a half and were excessively sad to leave when the time came to do so. Fritz and Aileen welcomed us like friends, as did Oscar, the property manager. The vibe was very chill and the wild life was exactly what we were hoping it would be. Couldn't have been happier with our experience. Thank you Fritz, Aileen and Oscar. Pura vida!

We were looking for some where to disconnect from the urban pressures and corporate influences that seem to find their way into our daily lives. I was so looking forward to rediscovering my spirit so I left all means of communication at home, totally off the grid, I was not disappointed. Truly an oasis this retreat will leave you breathless, from the cool breezes to the awesome yes romantic sunsets . The thatched roof cabins are meticulously maintained, and I sat every night bathed in the moonlight, listening to the waterfalls on the raised deck - no bugs- just peace . Oscar the manager was incredible and a true ambassador to the country, not only is he helpful he's an amazing cook as well. Venture into Vista Al Mar a small village close by and the locals will embrace you in their traditions and help you on your journey. The waterfalls are endless and the water is as pure as the locals hospitality . We will be back for much love and peace !!

Breathtakingly Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Rancho Tranquilo was the high spot of our two-week trip to Costa Rica. It is drop-dead beautiful. It is very secluded and surrounded by natural beauty on every side. The waterfalls on the stream that run through the property provide a soothing background sound at night, and you are awakened by the call of birds. The toucans have a particularly pretty call and we saw them every single day. We also had visits from monkeys and scarlet macaws.

My favorite simple pleasure at the Rancho was sitting with a cup of great Costa Rican coffee in the mornings and watching the mists rise out of the valley below us as the sun rose. The grounds are beautiful and well-kept, with fruit trees and flowers everywhere. My wife called this a fantasy land. There are also trails through the property and one takes you down to a great little pool at the foot of a waterfall.

At night the stars are brilliant. You can clearly see the Milky Way.

There are three cabins at the Rancho, and each sleeps two. The Rancho had internet access, solar power, city water and a full bathhouse with flush toilet. There is wifi internet access at the “master" cabin, and solar panels and a battery bank provide power for the lights on the property. There is a gas stove top and gas grill for cooking, but no refrigeration other than the provided cooler. Ice can be purchased at a little store about a kilometer away. You can ask Oscar the caretaker to take you to the tilapia farm for fish to grill. If Oscar has time, maybe he’ll make you patacones from the fresh plantains grown on the property. They are delicious.

You are very isolated here. We loved that about the Rancho, but others may not. There is a phone should you need to call 911, or order a pizza (really).

The road to the Rancho is on the rough side and you’ll want a 4-wheel drive for clearance. Once you’re there it’s hard to want to leave, but Antonio Manuel National Park is only an hour away and worth the drive.

We can’t say enough nice things about Rancho Tranquilo. Peaceful. Calm. Relaxing. Beautiful. And the wildlife comes to you.

Thatched Roof Cabins

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time at Rancho Tranquilo! We are avid campers and we loved the idea of staying in a thatched roof cabin. The cabin is cozy and there is a porch area to sit and enjoy the views right outside your room. ( We never saw a mosquito or fly our whole visit) The kitchen area is about 50 feet from the cabins and has a counter space, a two burner stove and a sink. There is also a gas grill and a pantry cabinet. You will need a cooler and ice if you plan on doing much cooking. The small bathroom is about 100 feet from the cabins and there is one shower under the first cabin. There is another shower next to the bathroom but it is not private. On the last day we were there they were preparing to start on the new bathroom shower complex so that will be very nice and it is close to the three cabins. The property is well maintained and clean and very beautiful. As other reviewers have commented, we saw wild life and there are two good hiking trails. We enjoyed cooling off in the stream, that cuts through the trails, after our hike. Carlos and Oscar are very good hosts and very helpful. Owners Aileen and Fritz don't live on the property but drove in to see if we had everything we needed and gave us restaurant recommendations. They do have wifi so you can get online if you need to. The Manuel Antonio park (a must see) is about an hour and a half away and it has three great beaches in the park. We snorkeled in the first beach and saw quite a bit of marine life (best seen closer to the rocks, it is clearer there). The only down side of our stay was the drive on 239, it is very rugged and is 11.5 miles from Hwy 39 to the Rancho.

Amazing & Highly Recommended!!

  • 5 of 5

We cannot say enough wonderful things about Rancho Tranquilo and our time there. We stayed at the property the entire 3 days (without leaving to sight-see or do other things), and loved how we were able to get away from

everything and enjoy nature --- we even became birdwatching converts while we

were there. We saw an incredible array of wildlife - 2 different types of

monkey troops several times in the nearby trees performing acrobatics for

us, blue morphos floated past, and it became an exciting daily tradition to get up early in the morning and wait in the afternoon for our private "bird shows" - different varieties of toucans, the white hawk--just unbelievable. The

accommodations were great; we loved the outdoor kitchen/common area, which had gorgeous locally made wooden furniture. We have gushed about our time at RT over and over to friends and highly recommend it to others!! It was such a peaceful, relaxing and rewarding experience - we felt grounded and one with nature - such a fabulous place!--we only wish we could visit more often! We were in Costa Rica 3 weeks and stayed in a wide-range of landscapes and accommodations but our rewarding and absolutely gorgeous experience at RT was unparalleled. It was by far one of our top Costa Rican highlights and favorites!!

A Truly Unique Experience

  • 5 of 5

Had an amazing time at Rancho Tranquilo. Wanting to escape the tourist traps and experience the true Costa Rica, we got more than we could have expected here. The first morning we awoke to monkeys playing in the trees, right next to our cozy little rancho. The next morning we saw a toucan while having breakfast.

The place is beautifully rustic and remote but also has enough creature comforts to make it a relaxing experience. This is truly a special place. Every day that we ventured off the mountain we kept just wanting to get back and make a rum drink with the fresh fruit all around and just lay in a hammock until it was time to throw some fresh fish on the grill.

Oscar the caretaker was very  knowledgeable and helpful. As publishers of a green publication, it was great to see the owners had such an appreciation for nature and taking care of it as best as possible.

There is a beautiful waterfall that is just a short hike. And Alex's Rustica Bar &Grill is a very cool little spot for a cold Pilsen or some great Tipico food.

We feel very lucky to have had such an unique experience by staying at Rancho Tranquilo and are  already plotting when we can get back,
