About the property

Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

Small, cute, clean, simple, cool and affordable get-a-way on the other side of the island, nestled up on a hill, overlooking Kaneohe Bay, probably one of the most beautiful views you'll ever see in your life. The sun setting behind the Koolau Mountains, back-dropping the Bay, the palms waving in the trade-wind breeze, sounds of birds singing in the trees shading the property; the many different shades of blues and greens, and white, fluffy clouds, coloring the landscape. Beautiful!!

(note: FYI! please be aware we are in a tropical location and do have an occasional bug that may wander in)

and lastly, we cannot offer you a 40' t.v.

nor alot of space, nor a Ja-cu-zi,

our only air? is the trade-wind breeze,

and our piped in music? The song of the bird in the tree

But, we do have 2 things we can offer you,

affordable rates, and........

A ROOM WITH A VIEW!!

About Uncle Dan/Ellie

Brought Mom and Dad to Hawaii when I was 7, back in the early 1900's, when they bought our home here, on the side of a hill, overlooking Kaneohe Bay, when there was only 1 road over the Pali to our side of the island. They have always entertained people as I was growing up, so we figured we should do the same and create a unit on the property so you can enjoy what we have for a reasonable price. If we don't get to personally meet, its because we are at our other cottage, 5000 miles west of here, on the island of Samar where we often spend some of our life at my wife, Ellie's, homeland.

Also look for the availability of our beach cottage on the island of Samar which is now on our other VRBO site.- including real estate for sale for those of you interested in investing in beachfront property on some of the beautiful, virgin, pristine islands within the 7,107 islands of the Philippine Archipelago.

Aloha, Uncle Dan & Ellie.

Notes:
a couple who stayed with us from Australia, who loved fishing, walked everyday down to a public right-a-away which access's Kaneohe Bay and cast their lines to catch 'oio' or Bonefish in English. He said that this area is a bonefish capital of the world, the best he's seen, and that he even read that info ahead before arriving. I did not know that.....

First trip to Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

This was our first trip to Hawaii. We chose to stay at "a Room with a View" because it was away from hectic tourist locations in Honolulu, but close enough to visit. We LOVED the accommodations. The view was amazing. Uncle Dan and Ellie were GREAT. We arrived late on Nov. 1 after traveling all day. We were going to try to find a local eaterie, but were met by Dan and Ellie, who invited us to stay for dinner!! Their hospitality was wonderful! We loved falling asleep each night with the island breeze and waking every morning to have our coffee on the Lanai, before hitting the road to explore the island. If we get the opportunity, we will stay there again. Would recommend this relaxing location to anyone visiting.

Unprofessional and disappointing stay

  • 1 of 5

I just came back from a week in Oahu with my boyfriend & was disappointed with the unprofessional handling of my reservation for "A Room with a View."

I made my reservation on 1/16/16 for a 5-night stay from 3/3/16-3/8/16. I paid my deposit & received my confirmation email from Uncle Dan via HomeAway. Two days before my arrival, I emailed & confirmed the reservation with Uncle Dan.

When I arrived, Uncle Dan informed us that we had been double booked for "A Room with a View" but he could offer us his secondary property "Little Shack under the Tree". However, that secondary property was also booked on the last night of our stay so he offered to let us stay free of charge in his daughter's bedroom (attached to main house and NOT a VRBO property). We were left without the privacy & amenities the VRBO properties provided for.

It was very stressful to find this change of plans when we arrived, instead of when I had confirmed a couple days prior to our arrival. Without ANY notice, we ended up being in a tough spot since we didn't have any back-up plans for lodging.

Overall we:

1. Didn't get the room we had a reservation for any length of our 5-night stay

2. Stayed the 5th night in his personal home & not a VRBO property

3. Not given notice of the double & triple booking conflicts prior to our arrival

On a side note, the deposit was done electronically & we were asked to bring the remainder of our balance in cash.

Our advice to potential renters is to double check the calendar is blocked off once your reservation is made. I would also insist on settling the balance electronically or via cashiers check. I would hate to imagine what would have happened if we just showed up at the property.

Owner's Response: This is the first time this ever happened to us since renting since 2009. It truly was our fault. I totally forgot to enter them in to the calander. Our other unit was available for the first 4 nites of their stay, which we were able to give them, and, yes on the fifth nite we put them in our upstairs Guest room- we did apologize for this mistake on my part and asked upon check in if they would be ok with staying upstairs on their 5th nite- they seemed fine with it at the time and I told them we would not charge for that 5th nite- also offered them a complimentary massage (valued at $80) from my daughter who is a licensed professional and when asked for a refund of their deposit, did so gladly- Again we apologize for this mistake and surely will never do it again. Outstanding Value

  • 4 of 5

Pluses: Gorgeous View of all of Kaneohe Bay, easy access to Kailua, Lanikai, & Bellows Beach, lots of songbirds, Outstanding price with TV, fast Internet, Kitchenette & Bathroom. Close to Haiku Garden and Haleiwa Joe's restaurant. VERY friendly and accommodating landlord.

Challenges: Lots of Marine airplane, helicopter , H3 Highway traffic & motorcycle noise, barking dogs. windows needed washing ( we did it and donated the Windex, what is it about Hawaiians and clean windows?) . Dry rot on deck ( watch your step !)

Overall: Outstanding value

Owner's Response: Thanks for choosing us guys- sorry I can't control the marine base, which does get irritating at times, nor the H-3 highway- but did strengthen that deck- thanks for showing us that, and thank you for doing the windows for us. Mahalo Uncle Dan

Wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

We recently stayed here and truly loved “a room with a view”. I was unsure at first as I had stayed in the big hotels on Waikiki in the past. My husband convinced me that this was the place for us. From the first contact with “Uncle Dan” to the day we departed we had no hiccups at all. Dan and Ellie were very helpful with all our requests and questions. The pictures

describe the place and area to a tee! You will find no surprises. We loved the area and how close the house was to everything. Big City diner (as Dan suggested) became our breakfast spot and sports bar! Also, being big football fans and after seeing how early games come on in Hawaii, Dan helped me to get our I-pad up and going early Sunday am to chat with folks on the main land. Much appreciated! The house is about 30-35 mins into Honolulu by freeway. We also enjoyed the cooler weather and trade winds. No air needed.

A fan over the bed was great and we never shut a door or window while we were there. Thanks again, Dan and Ellie and hopefulyl we will see you again!

Room with a View

In a word: Perfect! Cool, gentle trade winds refresh you. It's inspiring to wake up to a variety of birds greeting the new day. The Temper Pedic mattress was a delight to sleep on, providing me with a full night of uninterrupted, deep sleep. I highly recommend this thoughtfully furnished & equipped mini-apartment for those who are weary of the hustle & bustle and high prices of Waikiki and Honolulu.
