About owner/property manager

We originally came to Costa Rica over a dozen years ago for a vacation. We loved it so much that we ended up building our dream home here and moving to Costa Rica! It's truly a paradise.

owner/property manager purchased this house in 2006

Why owner/property manager chose Jaco

We chose to build our vacation dream home in Jaco because Jaco Beach is the most convenient beach in Costa Rica. You can walk the beautiful curved beach of Jaco and at the South end of the beach begins the rainforest where you can continue to hike and experience tropical wildlife and beautiful views of the coastline. Also a short walk from our vacation rental is the quaint town of Jaco with many charming cafes and shops. The weather , the swimming, the ocean and rainforest are always beautiful and welcoming as are the local Costa Rican people.

What makes this house unique

Our property, Sonidos Del Mar is unique in that the property is a completely private tropical paradise while being located only steps from the beach and a short walk to downtown Jaco. Directly on the property you'll have your own private tiled swimming pool with waterfall and tropical gardens and wildlife that weave in between a running stream.

Terrific Find

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Sonidos Del Mar! The south end of the beach is less crowded and one block away was perfect. We could hear the waves but the privacy of the house is ideal. The property and house are amazingly beautiful with everything you need. The architectural touches of curved walls, inset handmade tiles and glass, exotic wood, original paintings and the waterfall in the pool were much appreciated.

Laurie, the owner was very helpful making our arrangements and giving us suggestions of things to do in the area. Mario (the driver) was accommodating as well and always on time. Jan (the property manager) was fantastic setting up our tours, answering questions, and providing information. Our favorite tour was white water rafting on the Sevegre River. It was a blast complete with white water, swimming, waterfalls, breakfast, snacks and lunch. Sunset at Villa Calentes was spectacular and definitely worth the drive up the hill. Zip lining was a fun adventure and we all tried one platform upside down! My husband went fly-fishing (Jan arranged it with a local fly-fisherman) close to the border of Nicaragua and caught machaca. We hiked Miro Mountain but go very early because it gets so hot. Nice views and artwork along the way along with fascinating graffiti at the abandoned restaurant.

We did fine without renting a car. We planned down days staying at the pool and the beach, boogie boarding and swimming when there was no need for a car. We could walk to town for dinner and take a cab back for a few dollars.

We used the kitchen and barbeque often and enjoyed sitting outside on the porch for meals under the fans. There were few bugs and docile iguanas and lizards in the tropical gardens surrounding the house.

I would highly recommend this property to anyone visiting Jaco, Costa Rica.

Amazing two weeks in PARADISE!!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks here in February, and I cannot tell you how hard it was for us to leave!!! Best vacation ever.

Where to start! Our flight into San Jose, was delayed and we were very concerned about our transportation to the house from the airport. When we finally emerged with our luggage, Mario our driver was waiting there patiently with our personal sign and a huge smile! We didn't use his services for the trip as we mainly stuck around town, but he advise he was just a phone call away which was great!

We stayed in Sonidas Del Mar and it was fantastic. Everything you can imagine you would want in a home away from home. The blender was well used by the end of the trip, and made fantastic Pina Coladas :D

It's a beautifully designed custom home and has all the amenities you have at home. Large bedrooms each with their own en-suite baths, and tons of living space.

As other travelers have said, the guests that stayed at the adjoining house were all great, and we had no issues sharing the pool. It was great to get tips from others visiting and their feedback on what to do in Jaco! My daughter loved the daily visits from our iguana friends as well!

It was VERY hot while we were there, but with the pool steps away, and the beach only a few minutes walk, it was easy to always stay cool. Even with the heat, we never had all the AC units on, as the one in the main room was more than enough.

I highly recommend the hike up Miro mountain. Great exercise, and tons of nature to see! We never got to see the monkeys personally, but we spoke with others coming down that had just seen them.

Jan (the property manager) was great as well, and took wonderful care in making sure we knew the best restaurants, shopping spots, excursions, groceries, etc.

We took the Tarcoles River tour which was great. Saw lots of crocs up close and personal. Surfing lessons with Tortuga Surf School are highly recommended as well!

We cannot wait to come back for our next trip!

Pura Vida!

Truly an Oasis!

  • 5 of 5

Both your “Labours of Love” are more stunning than any photograph can do them justice! We stayed in both. The artful décor and design of both houses is a credit to your talent and taste. The proximity to the beach while ensconced in a lush tropical private paradise is truly Pura Vida, the best of both worlds. The shared pool and wee waterfall are a much-needed refreshment at this very hot time of the year and the ever-present iguanas and squirrels provided much entertainment. You seem to attract the right guests because both sets of folks who occupied the “other” house while we were there for five days were delightful and fun while never being obtrusive.

We liked the raised open spaciousness of Del Mar but concluded that we liked Del Rio for its tucked-away privacy and front-door access to the oft-used pool.

Jan, your friend and property manager, is wonderfully accommodating and knowledgeable and provided many very helpful tips about the area.

Both Jennifer and I would heartily recommend your idyllic retreat to anyone wanting a taste of Pura Vida!

Warmest regards,

The Snowbirds

Where do you live?

Costa Rica Paradise

  • 5 of 5

We couldn't have been more pleased with our accommodations! It was a lot hotter in Jaco than we were anticipating so it was so nice that there was reliable AC when sleeping and the ceiling fans were great as well. We didn't cook meals at the house but made toast each morning so the toaster was appreciated. The private pool and short walk to the beach was great! We didn't walk into town but did frequent the bar down the beach frequently. We took a taxi into downtown Jaco every night for dinner and with a tip we got to and from dinner each evening for $5. That was a nice surprise! The highlight of my stay at Sonidos del Rio has to be the monkeys we saw when we hiked up the mountain behind the house. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and Sonidos del Rio and del Mar is a great location to enjoy all the country has to offer. Pura Vida!

Excellent property, location, and overall experience

  • 5 of 5

I don't even know where to begin... We had an AMAZING experience: with the house (stunning and lovely), Jan (property manager who was awesome), Mario (driver, and great ambassador for CR! Lovely man) and the country as a whole.

Mario put us at ease immediately as we drove from the airport to the house. I had a great time chatting with him about CR, and he was full of great ideas of what we should do and see, not to mention bursting with pride about his country's impressive education system, health care, tech industry, and environmental stewardship. (I pestered him with questions about these things.)

The house itself is just lovely. As beautiful as promised, and so well located! The beach is so close, and the town a nice walk away too. Be sure to get up early a few times to see the beach in morning - magical! But not nearly as gorgeous as sunset. We didn't miss a single one, and that remains my favorite part of this trip.

We went zip lining, and hired Mario to take us to Manuel Antonio as our two big excursions. Both were amazing and wonderful! I can't recommend exploring Manuel Antonio enough. What a magical, clean, awe-inspiring place! We didn't know you could swim on the pristine beaches within the park, so go prepared to enjoy the entire experience.

It all felt very safe, and wonderful. My kids and I are very environmentally conscious, and just so appreciative of the true commitment by the Ticos to being good stewards of the land. Over lunch Mario and I talked at length about this. I can't tell you how much his friendly insights added to our experience. But, you do need to be conversant in Spanish. I would advise guests to really brush up on their Spanish, at least some key phrases. It made such a difference for us!

Food, transportation and amenities are more expensive than I had anticipated, especially when compared to other Central American countries, so prepare for that. Bring LOTS of cash! Also be prepared to pay the $36 per person exit tax for the country!! Not a nice surprise at the end of an expensive trip if you're not prepared. Also, allow 3 hours at the airport in San Jose - security is a nightmare there, no other way to put it. And, food in the airport crazy expensive! $87 for four burgers, fries and drinks.. on top of the exit fee, my credit cards hurt a bit more than I had planned. BUT. It was so worth it. Every penny. By far, the best vacation I've ever taken. Much better than using that $ to buy more stuff.

Everything we were hoping for, pura vida!

  • 5 of 5

We looked far and wide for a great place to stay on the Pacific side within 2 hours from SJO. Stumbled across Sonidos Del Mar and couldn't have been happier with our stay. We are very active and Lauri and Jan hooked us up and had us running from one amazing experience to the next. The home was a sanctuary and we loved coming back at the end of a day to be overwhelmed by the Ylang Ylang trees on the property and taking a refreshing dip in the pool. You are yards from the beach and great surfing, the kids even worked with Erly learning some surfing basics. From whale watching and herping up Miro's mountain to ocean kayaking and canopy ziplining we had a great time. One of our favorite parts was the beautiful scarlet macaws reminding us of our unbroken love for each other as we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary.
