About the property

Cabin, 2 Bedrooms, 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-7)

William Blake wrote that, 'great things are done when men and mountains meet'—a hopeful expectation that awaits guests of this peaceful and inviting Fairplay cabin.

Quietly tucked away on five acres of tall pine near Pike National Forest, the cabin offers a peaceful retreat. We have lovingly restored the 1000 square feet, 2-bedroom, 1.5 bath cabin into a simple and warm home away from home. The space lacks for nothing with a modern, well-appointed kitchen, lots of natural light, and comfortable beds with linens chosen for comfort. Both bedrooms have wonderful natural light. Bedroom #1 opens onto a balcony and Bedroom #2 boasts an enormous skylight. The family space is designed to create cozy seating to enjoy an evening together of games, reading or discussion and an open living room complete with wood stove and the faint scent of pine.

The cabin is delightfully comfortable, steeped in quiet tranquility, and yet close enough to the towns of Alma (5 miles) and Fairplay (2.5 miles) for that last minute item, shopping or a night out. You'll enjoy exploring both of these funky mountain towns. Walking distance to fishing on the Platte. A few of our favorite spots include the Alma Saloon and the bowling alley in Fairplay where you'll surprisingly taste some great food! Breckenridge is only 21 miles away and Buena Vista only 35 miles.

South central Colorado is home to some of the best nature has to offer, with ample hiking, fly fishing, mountain biking, wildlife and wildflowers. The stars on a clear night are not to be missed. The property sits near an open valley with spectacular views of the Mosquito Range Mountains. It is a perfect spot for your mountain getaway with plenty of private space, quiet, sunny mornings and proximity to all that Park, Summit and Chaffee Counties have to offer to the outdoor adventurer. From festivals, white water rafting, gold water fly fishing, hiking galore, wildflower and bird viewing in the summer to cross-country skiing, mountaineering, sledding, and hot chocolate sipping in the winter we know you will leave having had great experiences and with magnificent memories. If you happen to want a tranquil retreat alone, this is also an ideal setting.

World famous Breckenridge is a short drive away. The cabin is close enough to take advantage of all it has to offer but far enough to avoid the congestion of Summit County. Buena Vista and the Arkansas River provide exciting white water rafting and waters full of fish waiting for your fly to float by. This is an ideal location to set out on an adventure, or to sit on the balcony with a cup of hot tea, and a good book in company of hummingbirds. Whatever memories you hope to create, we know you will find this beautiful cabin the perfect setting for your next mountain vacation.

About Paul Petersen

Our family has enjoyed living and working in different parts of US and the world, and realized we loved spending time in the Colorado Rockies. We had a dream to own a cabin in the mountains where we could gather for many years to build rich memories with family and friends. We are outdoor enthusiasts who greatly appreciate the peace and natural beauty on this land and throughout much of the surrounding area...

This special cabin and land is a place where we can play, rest, relax, rejuvenate and reconnect.

When we purchased this property, it had no running water or electricity, so the first years of ownership were labors of love with family members and friends linking arms to redesign and remodel the cabin inside and out.

Paul Petersen purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Paul Petersen chose South Central

A refuge close to Denver and other attractions without having to fight the I-70 traffic. Peace, tranquility, beauty, and great proximity to many outdoor activities that we love.

What makes this cabin unique

Meditative walks on the labyrinth which we designed in a serene circle of pine trees, morning walks to the river, picnics inside the teepee, storytelling around the outside campfire ring, stargazing from the deck, balcony and through the big skylight in the master bedroom. Enjoying the peace and quiet on & around the land is a big draw...watching and listening to wildlife without ever leaving the property. Great location--to hike nearby trails and the 14ers from Kite Lake above Alma, to visit the local Fairplay shops and experience many weekend festivals, to venture to Buena Vista for white water rafting on the Arkansas River or local antiquing, and visiting the art galleries in Salida. It is fun to enjoy specialty foods in Breckenridge, fish nearby on the Platte River or choose from beautiful hiking trails in the area. A caring community that collababorates to celebrate Burro Days, MusicFest, Rodeo, Concerts by the lake and so many other special events.

Cabin with amenities, away from the hub-bub

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed this cabin with all its amenities, and its nature setting. We used it as a base for exploring Breck and Park Co.... it felt like it had the right balance of 'away in the woods' and close enough to activities if you wanted to find them. We were surprised how completely the cabin was furnished ( waffle iron, pizza stone, microwave, tea kettle, dish washer) and it was a very comfortable place to stay. It was thrilling to see a buck in velvet in the driveway, and 3 elk just across the road. I had looked forward to using the wood stove, but it was too warm in late June. The water heater is frighteningly loud at first, but you get to understand it's noises. The owners gave us good instructions and information ahead of time. I highly recommend the Petersen's cabin and glad they shared it with us.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was one of our favorites! It has every modern amenity, but still has the rustic charm that a mountain cabin should have. Cozy and quiet, it was just what our family needed to escape and unwind for a few days.
