Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at this cabin and must disagree with the other reviewer. It's only 100 feet up from the main road and is a easy to drive. We loved the all-wood cabin feel with all the bears and accessories. The views from every room are spectacular. Can't wait to go back!

OMG!!!! Just OMG...

  • 5 of 5

Unfortunately we weren't able to make our original reservation dates, however the Spencers were understanding and accomodating. Were just getting back home and everything was GREAT! The cabin is gorgeous with fantastic views. There were so many things to do in the area that we took some advantage of but with a cabin and view like that who wants to leave? :-) I've already asked my partner that my birthday present be another visit and I'm looking forward to enjoying the space and area again. Thanks so much!!!

Lovely Cabin. Great location

  • 5 of 5

This cabin has all the appointments including soft sheets (love). The upper level has gorgeous views of the lake and a very comfortable living area and spacious, well appointed kitchen. We were just a few miles in either direction of the marina for boating and the Nanahala Outdoor Center is just a few miles through the gorge which is a beautiful drive. Highly recommend.

Valentine’s weekend at Bear’s Lair

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is beautiful and well kept with wonderful lake views. It was just the two of us enjoying Valentine’s weekend, but the space would accommodate 10 people easily. The downstairs is separated by a door which would be ideal if there are multiple people or families and separate entrances available into the downstairs and upstairs living area. All the bedrooms appeared comfortable though we stayed in the loft area to wake up to the wonderful view. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you need to cook. We enjoyed the hot tub and looking up into the stars. Simply said, the cabin is cozy, spacious, and well kept. The pictures are accurate but definitely still looks better in person! No cell service, but the cabin has a landline with free long distance. Internet is available and worked just fine for us.

Only small difficulty we had was the hilly driveway which was snow covered from a recent snowfall and my poor Mazda3 couldn’t make the trip. The entrance driveway is shared among others who live in the area so we couldn’t ditch the car (though we thought about it). Luckily I had tire chains. However, the other cabins are at a good distance, so the cabin still feels secluded and the hot tub is not in view of any neighbors, so it just feels completely serene and private.

We definitely will plan to return with friends.

Owner's Response: We are delighted you loved our cabin! Sounds like you truly enjoyed it. While there is no cell service at the lake, we encourage guests to forward their cell phone to the house phone so you don't miss calls, and free long distance makes it easy to return calls. Plus texting and email works with our high speed wifi, and so does facetime calls. You benefited from a nice winter snow! Fortunately we are only 100 feet up from the main road, but it's a rare occasion when you can't drive up that drive. Please come in the summer as it's an entirely different experience!

Great Place. Great view.

  • 5 of 5

Extended Family of 11. Lots of room. Did a week stay. Found time for fishing, tubing, Mining, Dollywood, White water rafting, waterfall hiking, card games and a small bond fire. If you are a flat lander like us, switch back roads can be a little challenging. If you are coming on a Harley from the north do the dragon (US 129). If your pulling a boat like I did. Oh boy. Yes you are in a log house in the woods and there are a couple bugs. We rented a pontoon for the tubing and a joy riding. Locals very nice. no cell, tv spotty which I thought as a plus.

Comfy cabin, dangerous driveway.

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 7 stayed comfortably in this beautiful log cabin overlooking Lake Nantahala. The hot tub was a perfect place to relax after a long day of hiking, rafting, and ziplining (NOC). We enjoyed the gas grill and eating outside under the trees (that is, after all the rain stopped!). Taking a left out of the driveway along Wayah road provided ample twists and turns for our motorcycle lovers in the group.

The cabin itself is very spacious and each bed (even the loft bed) was squishy and soft, providing for a good night's sleep. There were two areas to watch TV, however satellite signal was spotty (I'm assuming this is again because of the rain). We were able to figure out how to connect an HDMI to the TV to play music off our cell phone (bring your own cable to connect to the TV). We heard some strange noises inside the wall by the King bedroom (animal...? Who knows...we told the caretaker).

The kitchen was very well stocked with pots/pans. We had a small problem with the ice maker, but the caretaker came the first day to fix it. Later when we used the dishwashwasher, we noticed it leaked (so we put a towel down and have notified the caretaker). There were quite a few large black ants in the kitchen, and we notified the caretaker about this as well. You can make it into a game ;) We ARE in the woods, afterall!

Speaking of woods...the driveway (actually the short gravel road leading up to the cabin driveway) is quite rocky and narrow (no guardrail). I'm mostly mentioning this because we were in a large truck with a trailer hauling motorcycles and all our luggage. Due to the rain, multiple ruts were eroded out of the drive, as well as a large concave overhang mudslide (for lack of better term), which from the top appeared normal, but if you looked down, you could see that it was dug out underneath (imagine the edge of a table). If we had driven on this part, the road would have crumbled away. Luckily, we noticed this coming back from our hike, put an orange cone there, and again notified the poor caretaker :) We had just enough clearance (if you hug the wooded side of the drive) to squeeze our truck/trailer through upon our departure.

Overall it was a great place to stay. Most of the above are minor things, but we thought we needed to mention the gravel road/driveway. We had a great family trip and many memories at the cabin!

Owner's Response: We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Bear's Lair. The very short drive (100 ft) up to the cabin is maintained by the homeowner's association and is in very good shape and very safe. That time period was after harsh rains that caused rutting. On the rare occasion this occurs, it is repaired as soon as the area is free from additional rain storms. Our caretaker responds to any items that need addressing as soon as he's notified. Thanks for your input. This is a great cabin with a fantastic view of the lake and mountains!

Beautiful home in great location!

  • 5 of 5

We went for a relaxing, peaceful vacation and that is exactly what we got. The cabin is nestled in the side of a mountain and has a breathtaking view that is so serene to wake up to every morning. The home is spacious and has a great cabin decor. The locals are very pleasant and helpful. There is no cell phone service and the nearest town is about 1/2 hour but that is what made it a great vacation for us, being away from the daily routines. There are many water activities close like fishing in the creek, boating in the lake, white water rafting, kayaking, hiking or just taking in the beautiful views!

Owner's Response: It just thrills me when our guests enjoy our cabin as much as we do! Yes, the view should be made into a postcard for the North Carolina mountain area.
