3 Minute Walk to Playa Grande W/ Pool, Cable TV and Internet

Bedrooms 2
Space 675 sq. ft.
Property type condo
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Condo, 2 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-5)

Our house, Casa Charly 3, is one of 6 bungalows surrounding a beautiful pool and garden. It is a five minute walk to the beach through a green zone. Ocean waves can be heard with occasional howler monkeys in nearby trees.

The beach is totally unspoiled since it is in a national park which protects leatherback turtles. Walking along the beach you feel you are in a wilderness since no hotels or houses can be seen except at a distance on a nearby beach. At night the beach is totally dark except for the stars and moon.

So you can walk on the beach, swim or surf and then walk to our house and cool off in the pool before you do what ever comes next. And there is a great restaurant, the Great Waltini's, a block away that is reasonably priced by US standards (like Fridays or Applebees). It is a great place to meet other friendly tourists and locals.

If you have a bigger group, you can rent out one or more of the other 5 bungalows for a memorable trip.

About Gerry Thiemann

My wife and I bought this home for vacations and future retirements. She is a Spanish High School teacher and I own and operate a Language School in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Gerry Thiemann purchased this condo in 2009

Why Gerry Thiemann chose Playa Grande

We choose Playa Grande because it is a tranquil beach but still offers excellent restaurants, surf schools and is next to Tamarindo which has everything a tourist could want including a driving range, reggae bar, night clubs and more.

What makes this condo unique

Walking on the beach and not seeing houses or hotels is truly a dream come true and very rare in today´s world. It is located in a national park. Also the locals are so friendly you feel at home from the start.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Amazing Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I have just returned home from our trip to Playa Grande, Costa Rica and we sure are missing it! We stayed in this lovely condo which couldn’t have been more perfect. It is situated right beside the Bula Bula hotel making it easy to find. Charly across the street educated us about the area and was very welcoming. We barley saw people in the other condos and pretty much had the pool to ourselves. My husband and I are in our thirties and enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. We saw a lot of wildlife and enjoyed surfing on the beautiful beach. We drove to a waterfall that is just outside Liberia which was gorgeous. For other excitement we took our rental car to areas like Playa Flamingo where we enjoyed the shopping, tours and restaurants. You are able to walk to Tamarindo by beach and pay one US dollar to cross on the water taxi. My favourite part was seeing the howler monkeys right up the street. I highly recommend this condo; I definitely would go back again. It is in a perfect location steps away from the beach, just over an hour from the airport and about 15 minutes from a major grocery store and you can’t beat the price. We made all our meals including salsa, guacamole and quesadillas. We thoroughly enjoyed the watermelons, pineapples and mangos.

It is very spacious and extremely private. The best trip I’ve been one by far!

Perfect Winter Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We continue to revisit this beautiful oasis for a quiet, laid-back, and thoroughly restful vacation. If you are expecting a five-star hotel type of accommodation with luxurious amenities, this is not the place you want. That is why we love it! It is located in a perfect small community where we enjoy visiting and getting to know the local people as well as enjoying the company of neighbors from all parts of the world.

Tired property

  • 2 of 5

Difficulty contacting amigo realty when we arrived. We had to go to a local restaurant and the waiter phoned him. The hydro and electricity were out when we got to the house due to a power failure in the area. Wasp nest over the pool which was dirty and unkept. Mosquitoes in the house bit us while we slept-no nets over the beds.

Owner's Response: The guest and manager must coordinate the arrival and since the time from airport to the condo is about an hour, any delays can result in some difficulties meeting the guest. Normally this is not an issue. Electricity in this area of Costa Rica is normally good, but this is Costa Rica and the power grid is run by the government, not a private company. Mosquitos are never a problem if screens are used on all windows and doors. And as far as I know, I have never seen a bed with mosquito netting over it unless it is outside of a house in a camping area.

BEWARE.............This place is a DUMP!

  • 1 of 5

Me, my wife, and our two daughters (age 3 and 5) spent five weeks in Costa Rica this summer. We stayed in VRBO rentals for one week at a time and had wonderful experiences.......until we came to Casa Charly. We dreaded coming back to this dump after a day exploring beautiful Playa Grande and let me tell you why.

The owners stuff is everywhere in the condo. All the dressers and cabinets are filled with the owners stuff. We couldn't even unpack our suitcases! Their is a broken washer/dryer sitting in the middle of the living room and christmas lights hang from the rafters. The comforters were stained and only one of the AC units worked. The four of us eventually all slept in one bedroom together because it was the only one with working AC. The pool looks more like a moat, we swam in it once and felt slimy afterwards. The first night I got eaten by bugs coming in through the bathroom window. I must have had thirty bites on my arm.

After three nights we had enough, we left this dump. Luckily, we were on holiday for five weeks and spending three nights in a dump did not ruin our trip. Do yourself a favor, stay away from this dump.

Owner's Response: It's unfortunate this guest was unhappy, but I believe he simply wanted to go to another place and get a refund. They simply left and did not contact the manager about any of these issues. The AC did go down, but all the other issues are simply not true. As far as the having our personal items in the condo, it is our home away from home and most of it is locked up and inaccessible. You cannot simply stay at a place for a few days, find issues and not call the manager, then leave and ask for a refund. None of the issues besides the AC were true. And they didn't even give us a chance to fix it. Warning to other owners, don't rent to them.

Great location, and roomy property

  • 4 of 5

We stayed 8 days at this house and the place was very spacious, with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The living area was also big and comfortable. The only thing it was missing was a proper dining table inside. There is a large one outside with benches but it gets dark and mosquitoes eat you alive. The pool area was nice, private and the garden was luxurious. It was kept clean everyday by the maintenance staff. The beach is few minutes walking. Maritza, the lady who welcomed us, was so generous of her time and services. The little grocery store next to the property is practical but very small and expensive. If you need to do proper groceries, go to Mega Super, 12 km driving distance. We highly recommend having a car to stay in that area. After 6PM, there is a security guard that opens a gate to get into the community.

Owner's Response: We normally don't get that many mosquitoes. In fact, it is far less than what we get in Ohio in the summer. The dining table is moved outside to make more room inside. It is best to shop for groceries in other towns. There is a ferry to Tamarindo if you don't have a car, but a car makes your stay much more convenient and adventuresome. Gerry
