About David and Meredith Vaughn

My wife and I are lovers of the southwest and Taos area and found a property to build a custom home in 2000. Our family designed and built the house using local materials and techniques to the delight of many guests who have enjoyed the peaceful surroundings at the place we call the Retreat at Rancho Canyon.

David and Meredith Vaughn purchased this house in 2000

Why David and Meredith Vaughn chose New Mexico

Just outside Taos, but next to 100,000 acres of Carson National forest with great views, this property and area was love at first sight.

What makes this house unique

A great passive solar location with privacy, views, it has it all. We have added on to the house and provided new features which make it a true Retreat property!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Incredible home David and Meredith.

My family was fortunate enough to stay at the beautiful and private 'Retreat at Rancho Canyon' over Mother's Day weekend. My mother and father were visitng from the midwest and we thought we'd treat them to a get-away while they were visiting Colorado, they we're thrilled with the accomodations.

The home and the property could not be better outlined in the description, great views from every room, thoughtful space planning and decorating..the list goes on. It is evident when you enter the courtyard patio that David has put his architectural background to great use in the design and layout of each aspect of the home, and he, along with his wife Meredith and son Jordan, have done an excellent job decorating, designing and building furniture to compliment the SW theme. From the outdoor pond, waterfall, and firepit to the cozy living room and wonderful sleeping quarters the attention to detail is impeccable. It seems they have thought through every piece of this dream home, even going so far as to provide recycling, composting, and water saving measures to ensure the enjoyment of resources for all those that follow in our path. I promise, you will not be dissappointed during your stay.

The location of the home is also very convenient to town yet isolated enough to feel like you are in a secluded forest. Just 5 miles from Taos and all of the shops and museums it is the perfect answer to those looking for serenity, yet wanting to be close enough the experience the restaurants, museums, the pueblo, and the unique 'flavor' of the southwest.

Thanks again David and Meredith for sharing your wonderful home with us, we look forward to another visit in the future.

Beautiful setting, beautiful home

  • 5 of 5

Four ladies stayed for a long weekend in October. The canyon was beautiful. We went on a couple of wonderful hikes, ate several awesome meals and really loved our time in the house relaxing by the fireplace, soaking in the hot tub and enjoying the fire pit. The house was well equipped and has a great vibe. We would gladly stay here again and I would definitely come back with my family too.

Wonderful Experience!

  • 5 of 5

For my first visit to Taos I'm glad I was able to say in such an incredible home located in a very convenient location. The highlight of my stay was being able to bring my three dogs to share the experience. David and Meredith did not hesitate when I asked if I could bring my well-behaved “furry family” along with me. The property is truly dog friendly with a secure courtyard so my dogs were able to run around freely with no worries. The nearby Carson National Forest is a wonder not to be missed as are many sights in the general area. Being able to hike and explore the surrounding area with my dogs every day was a treat. The house itself is wonderful inside and out with breathtaking views. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at David and Meredith's beautiful home. Great memories were made during my stay that will be cherished for many years to come.

Fabulous

  • 5 of 5

The house is beautiful! We loved the gas kiva fireplaces, the well-stocked kitchen, the outdoor fire pit...ok, we just loved all of it! We had planned on eating some dinners out, but ended up cooking in because we enjoyed the house so much.

Great Place to Stay in Taos

  • 5 of 5

We (two couples) enjoyed staying at the Retreat at Rancho Canyon during a recent week long vacation in Taos. The house is well apportioned with three bedrooms and boasts a spacious kitchen/great room. The kitchen is well stocked and the grill on the patio proved to come in handy when we chose not to eat in one of the many excellent Taos restaurants. The secluded location of the Retreat, about five miles from Taos plaza, contributes to a relaxing environment. Be sure to check out the meditation room a short walk from the house. David and Meredith made it clear that they were only a phone call away if there were questions about their home.

Exceeded expectations

  • 5 of 5

Coming a long way by car with three children we were really hoping the home we rented would be as we expected from the listing and pictures. We were not disappointed. The home was beautiful! Even better, they had everything we needed in the kitchen (no waffle maker though fyi), and a fold up high chair in the closet. The location was perfect, easy access to town and other adventures. We visited the Pueblo, Williams Lake hike in Ski Valley, horseback riding at Cieneguilla Stables, drove to Santa Fe and enjoyed the hot tub, stars, fire pit and comfortable living room with our family. We would definitely recommend.
