From the front door, you cross a dirt road and are only steps from sandy beaches...and out the back door is a lake/creek, which is a kayaker's delight (kayak access from Bay). Sporting a modern white beach decor, the cottage is an open plan and bigger than it may appear. This secluded Chesapeake Bay beach community is an 'away' destination that offers swimming, crabbing, kayaking, fishing and walking along miles of undeveloped shoreline - or it's equally great for just relaxing on the beach with a good book. Charming beach cottages are equipped with the latest amenities - safe and kid-friendly yet isolated enough to be a perfect couple's get away or a friends' weekend at the beach. Perfect for a party of 2 or 8. Master bedroom has a queen bed for parents and two twin beds for the kids. Two additional bedrooms are at the other end of the house: one with queen bed, one with two twin beds. And, a sofa large enough for sleeping or lounging in front of the tv is in the living room. A well-outfitted large porch fronts the house for dining and relaxing.

Ten miles from historic St. Mary's City, Maryland's original capital, and 5 miles from beautiful Pt. Lookout Park, biking, boating and fishing abound. Or, charter a boat and fish/enjoy the Bay while someone else does the work. Herons, egrets, osprey, bald eagles, diamond-back turtles and occasional pelicans share this special spot with other wildlife - and a few people, too.

Park your car and stay home or enjoy day trips to Solomon's Island, Smith Island (via boat from Pt. Lookout Park), St. George's Island or to historic Leonardtown for good food and browsing the quaint shops. It's hard to believe you are only 1.5 hours from Washington's Reagan Airport. Take a day off from the sunshine and visit Washington's Smithsonian Museums, the Capitol and scores of other attractions. Then, come home to the soothing waves lapping up to shore. Fall asleep and awake to the spectacular site of the sun rising over the Bay. Truly a little bit of heaven at Hays Beach.

Please Don't Let this be Heaven

My family and I were in Scotland, Maryland for our grandfather's memorial service. We rented from Peggy twice before and we loved those stays. We felt comfortable renting another house from Peggy. Once I booked The Hideaway, Peggy sent a message saying she would provide access codes closer to our arrival date. I never received an email. Once we arrived we obviously could not access the house. Peggy sent an access code that did not work. I called another number (Bob answered) and we finally gained access. The Hideaway was absolutely disgusting! The Hideaway looked as though it had not been cleaned in quite some time. When we walked into the house it smelled musty. Usually a freshly cleaned house will smell of bleach, Lysol, or air fresheners. Not here, just musty which was the 1st red flag. The Hideaway has 3 guest bedrooms, 2 with carpet. The carpets had spills all over them. I didn't even want to take my shoes off. I opened up one of the bedroom closets and it had a bleached smiley face in the carpet. Creepy... I laid down on 1 of the twin beds and the sheets smelled like they had not been washed, 2nd red flag. I went to the bathrooms to look at the towels provided and they were dingy and gray! Obviously, the towels were once white, 3rd red flag. Finally I came to my breaking point, there were mouse droppings EVERYWHERE: in closets, on the kitchen counter, in the kitchen cabinets, behind each piece of furniture. I was so upset and embarrassed to have my family see this house. We immediately packed our belongings and drove to a nearby family member's house to wait until I heard back from Peggy.

I messaged Peggy through the VRBO website. While I was waiting for a reply, I also called the number she provided. No answer. I received a phone call from Katie (I believe). She apparently helps Peggy with managing her properties. Katie was very responsive and she moved us to another house, Marabheag, within 2 hours of me contacting Peggy. The Marabheag was an absolute delight. It was SPOTLESS! This is what I expected from renting another house from Peggy again. I would have given the Marabheag a 5-star rating. Thankfully our time in Scotland was salvaged by being moved to another house where my family felt comfortable, safe, and clean. Katie said Peggy would contact me, I still haven't heard from her. I do have to say I am still utterly disappointed in the rental experience. I can no longer recommend Peggy's houses on VRBO given the overall experience.

Owner's Response: Let us begin with the fact that this guest was given an upgraded house, free-of-charge that she pronounced "spotless." The guest seems most frustrated that she was unable to reach the owner, specifically, on a moment's notice. Unfortunately, the owner has an additional full-time job along with 13 other properties to oversee. That is why Scotland Yards has several local property managers whose names and numbers are prominently displayed on the welcome letter. And, in fact, this guest did reach a property manager, Katie, who promptly moved her to the upgraded house she mentioned. We disagree that the Hideaway was not clean. It is professionally cleaned between each guest and there were NOT mouse droppings "everywhere." We are always concerned when any guest finds a problem with one of our houses, so we inspected carefully. Unfortunately, we did amount evidence of a mouse having been in the house at the bottom of ONE closet that had been overlooked by the cleaners. For that, we do humbly apologize. Our houses are all on septic systems so do not - and one should not - use bleach on the towels. That are, however, clean, high quality and in good order. In closing, we note that this guest booked our least expensive large house. It's still a wonderful house, as many repeat guests attest. It's unfortunate that even after having been given a free upgrade, this guest chose to leave a review that is both untrue and ungracious. Sometimes no good deed goes unpunished.

Couldn't have asked for a better week. Peggy was very accommodating, and the local oysters were delicious. Multiple beach access points.

Special family outing.

  • 4 of 5

Great time shared with family. Beach was very nearby. House was charming. Great for our needs: five adults and one enfant (who had the time of her life). We had a systems problem, but the property managers responded quickly, cheerfully and effectively. The owner reached out appropriately to ensure the resolution of our issue. No one missed a beat on all the fun.

MD beach house

  • 3 of 5

The location was off the beaten path allowing us to relax and enjoy our family time. 1st impression upon arrival was good. Rooms and furnishings very tastefully done. With a stay in December and cooler temps we attempted to turn on furnace to no avail. We called and themanager came out and get the furnace started, but that was not a fix needed so we stoked the fireplace and woke up to a very cool house hte next morning. Service team worked several houses next day to resolve the issue and heat was restored. Beach walks and visits to naval base and look out park was very enjoyable.
