About Mary Grace
Hi, My name is Mary Grace and I manage this truly special property. The warmth of the wood and the open space welcomes you as soon as you step inside. You'll feel right at home and be ready to throw some lobsters in the pot before you know it.
Why Mary Grace chose Bass Harbor
I am originally from Long Island, NY and have been blessed to live in the MDI region for many years. The Dock House just epitomizes Maine and the joys of escaping to Vacationland!
What makes this House unique
If the sound of the ocean, the cry of the seagulls, the smell of salt air, and being completely surrounded by nature with all the comforts of home sounds appealing to you, then The Dock House is your next vacation destination!

A comfortable and relaxing place with an ebb and flow of aquatic flora and fauna against a mtn view!
The Dockhouse comfortably fit our family of five adults. Bedrooms were clean and fresh and well-appointed. The kitchen was abundantly outfitted. We made use of the boat, kayak, dock and deck. Enjoyed watching ducks, loons and fishing boats as we had meals on the beautiful table or sat in the living room with our morning coffee. One afternoon we were serenaded by a neighbor as he/she played the accordion! We all had moments where we were just mesmerized by the tide as the inlet emptied then shortly filled back up with 12 feet of water. Truly a magnificent thing to see. Any downsides? If you're looking for lots of shops, restaurants, etc you may want to try the east side of MDI. We preferred the serenity the area around the Dockhouse offered.
Perfect vacation spot!
Beautiful views especially at sunset and moon rise
After we oohed and ahhed about the views upon arrival my mom mentioned this was the cleanest house she ever stayed in (she had not seen previous reviews). Everything was great. Very quiet location. While at very low tide it may not be sandy like Frenchman Bay, it has far more gorgeous views especially in the mornings and evenings. Being right on the water was great. Sited of ospreys catching fish and herons from the deck and eagle and dolphin from the kayak near Bass Harbor Head lighthouse. Took photos repeatedly off the deck because each day offered such great dramatic shots. Southwest Harbor also has some artist co-op type shops - far less commercial than Bar Harbor. Thurston's Lobster Pound down the road was great! Mary Grace was easy to work with and very responsive to questions.
A Piece of Heaven on the Maine Coast
Our family (3 Generations) spent the second week of August at the Dock House. I can't find enough superlatives to describe the experience. Sad to think we almost cancelled after reading the previous review. I don't know what axe that person was grinding but my advice is to completely disregard that distorted view of reality. There were 6 of us on the trip and all 6 rated the house and the vacation a perfect 10. The views from very window are gorgeous the location of the cottage affords privacy while submerging you in a picture book slice of the Maine coast. We kayaked every day in Bass Harbor...the little islands provided endless exploration opportunities for our two grandsons (9 and 11) and we didn't have to worry about them because it is so protected. Yes, by golly, there is low tide here, and there is mud at the bottom of the ocean! We had fun beachcombing during those hours and watching the many bird species who appeared during those hours to search for dinner. We has originally thought that we would spend most of our time at Acadia and just use the house as a home base, but after one day of fighting with the crowds at Eagle Lake we retreated to Bernard...to enjoy the peace of "the Quiet side". What else can I say...we gathered each night to watch the spectacular sunsets cast their pastel colors over the harbor and we saw the Perseid Meteor showers from the house's huge deck...We loved every moment of our time at the Dock House and have pressed those moments firmly into our Family Memory Bank! Thank you Mary for being such a gracious host. Do we hope to go back soon? You bet.
Not an accurate description of the property or accommodations.
Not clean or maintained. Odd layout. Only one bathroom on lower floor where the modest 3 bedrooms are cobbled together with only one plastic stall shower with no place to hold shampoo or soap. Broken sink too. Second bath upstairs next to kitchen which is also a storage closet.
Sheets, towels, etc old, mismatched and neglected.
The stove does not work. Both contact numbers given including caretaker don't no why so we have no stovetop. Windows have broken handles. Area rugs have stains.
Don't let photos fool you. Bass Harbor is lovely but tides go out and the dock sits in the mud until it returns.
Poor customer service. Would not recommend this property.
The only inaccurate portrayal of The Dock House is this review. Here are the facts: 1. The ceiling was just painted and the house thoroughly cleaned immediately prior to arrival, as this was the first guest of the season. The house is kept very clean and well maintained, as evidenced by its' strong rental history, with many repeat guests from all across the country. They marvel at the uniqueness and charm of this great house with spectacular views and proximity to nature, with the lowest of low (yes, muddy) tides followed later by the peaceful sound of the tide coming back in, but to say the house sits in mud is painting a falsely negative impression. Pictures do not lie. 2. I was notified approx. 9:30 am Sunday 6/21 that stove countertop was not working. Stove was working prior to check-in. Caretaker was notified. I arrived at the property as soon as possible, approx. 1:30 pm to see if the situation could be rectified. Both caretaker and myself were unable to get it working. Sincere and profuse apologies were offered and the serviceman was able to make an emergency call the very next day, arriving approx. 2:30 pm, and measured for a new countertop, as the existing one could not be repaired. The new countertop arrived on Thursday but needed special installation, so the guests were offered and agreed to financial compensation of their own determination, even though it clearly states in the rental agreement that appliances are not guaranteed. The truth is that it is the owner/property manager/caretakers' worst nightmare when and if something does break down, and we all did our best to be as accommodating as possible, realizing and acknowledging it was a huge inconvenience. We fail to see this as "poor customer service" in any way. 3. The sheets were purchased last season and definitely matched, towels are plentiful and definitely mismatched. 4. The house is described as family friendly, including pets. The living room rug was just shampooed but does have a few stains. Most guests value the ability to find such a reasonably priced , pet-friendly, private waterfront location w/proximity to Acadia National Park, shopping, restaurants, and all the house has to offer over a few stains (guests had 3 dogs ). The owner is an artist and her daughter an interior decorator and take pride in the design and décor of the house.
Fabulous week in private ideal location
Before even arriving we had a very easy time renting the property. MaryGrace was very easy to work with and answered all of our questions. The property is located on the quiet side, but down a long private drive. The views are incredible, the tides dramatic. You can sit on the deck and watch the boats in Bernard come in and out at a small distance. Nothing motors past the actual house dock but Seagulls, ducks and cranes! The home is well appointed, open and welcoming, the furniture very comfortable, beds also. Kitchen is well stocked with all the things you need to eat in, or warm up what you have brought from all the local groceries and shops. Hiking is close by, the water cold, but you can swim right from your own dock with the tides. There are a few great restaurants within a very short drive. There are a few grocery stores and small marts, but if you are stocking to eat in you may wish to drive further back to the top of the island (15 mins). The pictures do not do this hidden gem justice. Great for a family, and our dog adored it too.
The Dock House offers a private, idyllic setting, yet you are surrounded by Acadia National Park and the opportunity to hike, bike, swim, sail, or just relax and get away from it all. I really enjoy taking a sunset cruise over to Islesford and having a gourmet meal in the charming restaurant right on the water.
