About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

This lovely hillside property perches above the waters of Johnstone Strait. From one side of the 93 foot glassed balcony, you look over the totems in the historic village of Alert Bay. From the other you look across the waters of the Strait to the snow capped mountains of Vancouver Island. This quiet and well appointed adult home is an ideal retreat for writers or artists, as it comes with both a den/library and art studio.

Perfect too for the amateur pilot who can take advantage of the well maintained airstrip on this tiny island. The eagles soar over your head here and the orcas swim past the deck. The only thing you hear is the motor of the occasional passing cruise ship. Hike the old growth forest trails, enjoy the sea kayaking, unparalleled sport fishing. Learn about the culture of the 'Namgis First Nation at the unique U'Mista Cultural Centre.

This home is completely equipped and ideal for a longer stay.

About The Owner

This home was bought 10 years ago while I was working as the physician for the Namgis First Nation here in Alert Bay. Its many visitors have often commented that the vista from almost every room is unique and spectacular. While work has taken me east for the time being, I love the opportunity to come back to my real 'home'. My new husband Francois loves it here as much as I do. We try to come back as often as possible and enjoy the opportunity of sharing it with others when we are not here.

The Owner purchased this house in 2000

Why The Owner chose Cormorant Island

The view speaks for itself!

What makes this house unique

Alert Bay is the home of traditional native carvers. There are many totem poles still standing in the traditional burial grounds. During summer months there are performances of traditional native dance and song in the Big House. In addition there are many opportunities to enjoy tips to nearby ancient island villages.

Literaly a Home Away

  • 5 of 5

Many vacation rentals are so sterile, like hotel rooms. This home is like visiting your sister's place, you know, the 'rich' sister, the art dealer. It is hard for the on-line pictures to do it justice. The home is like living in an at galley with Inuit, local indigenous and oriental carvings and silkscreens intermingled with family photos. How to explain the feeling of Luxury? Our home has two doors; we have friends with three doors. This home has seven! Within a half hour of arriving we heard the telltale "pffff" and rushed to see a humpback whale swimming past the pier at the bottom of the property. A fledgling bald eagle was practicing flying while parents watch approvingly from trees on the adjacent property. So, rent the deck and get a luxury home thrown in. When in town, find Arthur at the Culture Shock coffee house and get a new perspective on native culture and spirituality. The whole experience of renting this home was magical for us and we wish the same for you. Truly better than you have the right to hope for.

Home base while working in Alert Bay

  • 5 of 5

My colleague and I stayed at this beautiful house on four occasions while working in Alert Bay over the last couple of months. It's clean, cosy, and well appointed. And it has a tremendous view out over the ocean. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Wonderful retreat on Cormorant Island

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 6 week stay in this 'home from home' Travelling from England wanting a different travel experience, we were not disappointed. We loved the house and the island. Everyone we met were friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. The house was so comfortable, well decorated and such a good size, we felt right at home. Everything was as described, worked well and the bed was comfortable plus the jacuzzi bath was a real treat especially when we had been walking.

My husband is a wildlife photographer and the panoramic deck was great, being able to watch the eagles, kingfishers, humming birds and occasionally whales, dolphins and sea lions. Plus the views were mesmerising even on wet days.

We managed a couple of whale watching trips from Telegraph Cove and Port McNeil before the end of the season plus a couple of fishing trips from Alert Bay.

We were also keen to visit the U'Mista museum and learn about the Namgis First Nation history, we were even invited to a Potlatch which was an amazing experience.

We found the Supermarket and Drug Store in Alert Bay had most things. We had breakfast at The Bayside and lunch at Pass'n Thyme on a few occasions.

Val and Gene the Managers and Katrina provided us with great support, making our stay even easier and more memorable.

We have certainly recommended the house to our friends.

Perfect Family Vacation Home and Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

We recently returned from our stay at this home and I must say, it is one of the best rentals we have stayed in. The house is very large and comfortable, and it was perfect for our family of 4, with 2 active boys. The home is in perfect condition, clean, and very well equipped. The kitchen has anything and everything you need, and the bedrooms and beds are large and super comfy. There are plenty of towels and supplies. The washer and dryer work very well, as does the stove. The wrap around deck has an amazing view of the bay and has breathtaking views of glorious sunsets. The neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. We were able to observe whales passing by and bald eagles flying overhead right from the deck. The fireplace made it magical and cozy at night, and there is plenty of firewood available at the house. This house, location, facilities and amenities, and the owner/manager are really fantastic and I highly recommend it to others.

The great Irish poet W.B. Yeats wrote of places at the seashore where one could get away to for an offering of pure simplicity, relaxation, and contemplation. Both Alert Bay and this outstanding home are about as close as you're going to get to actually realizing that sort of destination in this post-modern, nano-cyber-i'm-so-hyper age.

I don't know the square footage of the home, but it was a good bit larger than we'd expected. It's lovely and well furnished. Then there's the raised deck out the sliding glass doors. Oh Wow. The view is astounding. We spent a month and wished we'd had another 10 days more. My first morning, I was making coffee, glanced up from the kitchen sink, looked out over the aforementioned deck, and ... counted 7 bald eagles within 200 yards of me.

Alert Bay/Cormorant Island itself is a now sleepy, very quiet small island, after a more rollicking time in bygone decades. A series of trails through the woods offer plenty of running, walking, or simple solitude opportunities. The local First Nations community are quite friendly, informative, and especially kind.

I'd recommend this as a longer rental stay for anyone (or a couple or even two couples) who is over 35 and would like to get away or perhaps do some writing or maybe paint.

Car: not necessary

Aert Bay is home of the 'Namgis First Nation. There are many opportunities to view totem poles, see traditional carvers at work, and during the summer months, watch traditional dance at the Big House. There are opportunities for whale watching in the beautiful Johnstone Strait, combined with visits to the Orca Lab, and other whale habitats.
