I'm a 23 years old guy, who's traveled some times around some places and this apartment is a really great deal considering what you get and what you pay for! Me and my mom spent about 20 days in this apartment and since the first contact with John (the owner), it was great. He was completely honest during all the arrangements and procedures and nothing went wrong, even considering the fact that we never met until the day of my check-in (all the conversations were via e-mail). We are from Brasil and I shall confess that my mother was a little bit stressed at first with the fact of being in a place that she had never been before, totally different culture (she doesn't speak english), and the building doesn't look like a hotel at all if that's what you're looking for. But if you are searching for a cheap place to really enjoy the local way of living, plus having the comfort of being at your "own place" (this including a complete kitchen, laundry machines, cable TV, etc.) this is the one you're looking for. After we've been living there for a couple of days and my mom got used to everything and notice that her concerns were foolish, everything flew naturally as it should be. If you still have any doubts about it, then you should try sending john an e-mail and I'm sure he'll explain everything in better details for you. Hope you have fun as we did!
We were three guys from Sweden that stayed in this great appartment . Good owner that showed us around the first night (very appreciative). Close to the subway and very easy to locate.
Calm neighborhood with a good vibe. We stayed there for two weeks without a single incident.
The purpose of our trip was Hockey games, when it came to tickets John took his time and helped us out so we could get a good deal.
Spent the first week here in Harlem.
The apartment is on the 5th floor of a typical Harlem brownstone, in a lovely street. Unlike some of the other reviews, We found it very peaceful and quiet both day and night. I and my wife slept in the front room, and my daughters in the back. We had no disrupted sleep at any time.
We found the apartment a nice place to stay. There are aircon units in all the rooms. However, the unit in the second bedroom was a bit rickety, and tripped the electric a few times. Its probably due a replacement.
Bathroom was fine, with no issues re hot water etc. Nice living area with a big tv and plenty of channels, but we never really watched much tv.
Kitchen was nice, and there is a good selection of cutlery, plates etc. You really shouldnt want for anything.
Strong Wifi available, so should suffice for most people.
I would say though, that the bedroom furniture is very tired, and could do with new bedside tables and lights in both rooms. Relying on ceiling lights is not really that nice.
The apartment is serviced by a lift, and the apartment and building are secure. You need 2 keys to get into the building so its residents only.
The other residents we met were very pleasant, and we had absolutely no issues at all.
John, the owner of the apartment was a really nice guy. We arrived a day late due to a missed connection, but he was accommodating, and when we arrived he gave us a thorough guide to the property, and took us around the local area, pointing out the best restaurants, and food takeaway place. He also showed us the subways, and explained the best ways to get in and out of the city. He also gave us good advice about the area.
We had a problem with some repairs needing done in the bathroom, and John addressed these quickly and with minimum fuss.
With regards to the area.
For Northern Europeans, and particularly a family of caucasian Irish red heads like us :-), We had a small bit of anxiety about staying in Harlem. It is very much an African American and Latino/ Dominican area, but our concerns were soon dispelled.
We came away absolutely loving Harlem and the people there. Do not hesitate, you will really enjoy it here. People were friendly and no-one caused us any problems. Also, everything is on your doorstep, from delis, to fast food places to good restaurants and handy subways.
We arrived from downtown by subway after midnight several times, and no one payed any attention to us.
This was my as well as my friend's first time to New York. We didn't known what to expect really and had even been a little worried, never having rented an apartment this way before, let alone in a huge city like NY. Everything turned out fine, however, as:
- the neighbourhood, though very mixed indeed, is very safe,
- the apartment is great and was very clean when we arrived, and furthermore, it's just a few blocks away from the subway, with Midtown and Downtown Manhattan only 15 to 20-minute subway ride away,
- John, the host, is extremely nice, friendly and helpful.
My friend and I had opted for the Non-share option, meaning we had the whole apartment to ourselves for the whole period of our stay, but there is also the Share option, in which case you share the apartment during your stay with other people and accordingly pay a lot less. But either option is a great value for money!
We liked our New York experience a lot, also owing to John and his apartment, which I definitely recommend.
We was 3 people and we rent the appartment with the non share Option.
We arrived at the appartment and met John. He was very friendly. After the busness part he spend us a little sightseeing tour around the block we lived for the next 10 days. This was a wonderfull service.
The location was for us very good. Only two blocks away from the subway with the express train. The people in the neighborhood was cool and friendly. We didn't have problem. The appartment was clean.
Everything in the appartment worked well and when we had trouble we could call John everytime. But we didn't need this service.
When we will come back to NY then we will going to John.
We ( mom, dad and kid) enjoyed staying in this appartement for a full week.
The pictures are exactly what the appartement looks like. The neighbourhood is mostly spanish - afro american, but like any other neighbourhood. We've never felt uneasy.
The subway being two blocks away or the bus just down the street, offer great acces to lower Manhattan.
John is a friendly owner, and so is Morel :-)
The price is great, concidering you are only 15 minutes away from the "touristic" part of new york, check the prices over there!
Thx again John for a making our stay in NY rememberful
