About Maryla Cobb
Although I have lived in New York for many years and consider myself a New Yorker, I was born in Europe and travel a lot all around the world. For me, my vacation rental is more than just a business. It is the joy I get from making my guests feel at home in our townhouse, as well as helping them to discover the dynamic and creative energy that New York has to offer. My husband Geoffrey is a high school history teacher. He speaks German, Spanish and French and helps greet our international guests.

Comfortable apartment on a quiet street
Although we weren't there for lunches and dinners, we enjoyed being able to fix breakfast and/or share wine and cheese with friends. The apartment has two bedrooms (king bed and queen bed), one bathroom, and a pleasant, decent-sized kitchen, livingroom combo. The neighborhood is quiet (you wake up to chirping birds) and convenient to Greenpoint and all of Manhattan with the G line and/or East River Ferry. My husband and I stayed here for our daughter's wedding at the Greenpoint Loft. It was perfect and Maryla was helpful. I would stay here again.
Wonderful Stay in Brooklyn
Everything about this rental was wonderful. A perfect neighborhood and location in Brooklyn very close to incredible dining and attractions. Maryla was everything you could want in a host. Would definitely stay here again in the future.
Great cozy home!
We loved our stay! The apartment was beautiful with tons of character and plenty of space! There was even a Christmas tree for our holiday stay! Our stay was super easy with our two small kids and we cannot wait to come back!
Felt like home!
We had a lovely family Thanksgiving here. Maryla was so friendly and helpful, and she made sure we had everything we needed. The neighborhood is charming and has every amenity: well stocked grocery stores, bars and restaurants, drugstores, convenient subway stops. The apartment is beautifully decorated, spotless and comfortable, with one of the most comfortable showers that I have ever used in a rental apartment. Altogether a gem!
Excellent property in great location
We stayed here in late October. From the very outset of booking the property Maryla was very responsive to any queries via e-mail. We were due to arrive early and depart late and she was very accommodating in terms of checking in early and looking after our luggage on departure day.
When we arrived Maryla made herself available to us and gave us some great tips regarding the local area (shops, bars, pizza's, restaurants, transport etc).
The location, for us, couldn't have been better. Around 30 minutes taxi from LaGuardia. Away from the hustle of Manhattan and just 2 minutes from Franklin Street, a really cool street with great coffee shops, bars and restaurants and just a 30 minute walk from the amazing Williamsburg (check out Bedford Avenue. Again, great shops, coffee shops and restaurants). For Manhattan, the apartment is around 10 minutes walk from the East River Ferry ($2.75 each journey), and what a great way to arrive in Midtown, with a fantastic view of the skyline. Or you can head south down to DUMBO and Wall Street. Re the subway, 2 stops on the G Line ($3.00 each total journey within 2 hours), a quick change and 3 stops later you're in Times Square. So basically, really easy access to the island but with the feel of living in a real neighbourhood.
The apartment itself was as good as the photographs suggest. Very light, modern, very clean and comfortable and Maryla clearly cares about keeping on top of things, The beds were very comfortable, and the area was quiet so we all slept very well. The bathroom was very modern with a great shower. A washing machine and dryer is provided so we were able to keep on top of our washing. The kitchen is spotless and well stocked in terms of dishes, glasses and cutlery. There is a flat screen TV with many channels to choose from including UK Premier League football.
We'd love to go back and would love to book again with Maryla. I've already this place to work colleagues and friends. Thanks again Maryla.
Disappointing apartment experience
We arrived at the address of the apartment (no 2) that we had booked, very tired after a much delayed journey from UK. We were told by the people in the building to go to no 8, a few doors along the road, and there we met Maryla. Maryla showed us in and around, but it was soon obvious to us that this was not the apartment we had booked. Instead of 2 double beds we had one double bed, one single bed, and a double sofa bed, on the floor. Also, although the apartment was generally well equipped, the floor plan was very different to our expectations, being smaller.
We were not in any position to discuss this at that time. The next morning, first thing, Maryla came to see us, apologising for us not having the apartment we had booked, because of a problem with the plumbing that made the apartment uninhabitable. She gave us some financial compensation. I have no way of knowing whether this was an appropriate amount, but we had no realistic alternative to accepting it. I questioned why there were people in No 2 if there were problems with the plumbing, and Maryla explained that the problem did not extend to the apartment those people were staying in, which was on a separate floor. There was no washing machine, so Maryla gave us vouchers to use at the local launderette.
Maryla said that this was the first time this sort of thing had ever happened to her, and was extremely apologetic. Accepting that, the fact remains that our apartment was less comfortable than we had expected, and that did diminish the enjoyment of our stay in NYC. Although the sofa bed was actually quite comfortable to sleep on, I have a chronic back problem, and the process of getting up and down on the floor to sleep was not what I had expected.
All in all, we all made the best of a bad job, but I doubt we will use HomeAway again.
While I can completely understand the frustration our guests experienced, I am thankful our guests made evident - by the review - that I did everything possible in my power to accommodate them under extremely unfortunate and surprising circumstances well beyond my control.
Indeed, there was a major plumbing issue in that particular apartment that suddenly arose and that required dismantling the commode, wall tiles and floor of the bathroom to repair. The work took two days to complete.
Though I extended financial compensation, provided laundry vouchers to laundromat 2 minutes from the apartment, and accommodated in all aspects possible, I am particularly grateful that I was able to offer an alternative apartment and not add calamity to the inconvenience.
As a long time host on Home Away, this review stands as anomalous to the 94 excellent reviews I have enjoyed here. And so, would encourage the guests to continue using Home Away for their travels as the platform is replete with hosts like me, who delight and pride themselves in providing utmost hospitality.
