About Steve Kunkel
I've been building and remodeling houses since 1975. I've lived in Washington since I was born and really like Northwest Forests. As a youth I played Cello in the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra so I've always loved classical music. I have been married to Alice since 1979. We have two daughters and 4 grandchildren. I come up to the Lodge once a month to both relax and also to keep everything in good working order.
Steve Kunkel purchased this House in 2006
Why Steve Kunkel chose Port Angeles
I've always wanted to build a cabin in the woods, so we chose a large lot with a lush green forest here in the Northwest. We also wanted a property with a stream running through it located where no highway noise can be heard. It's like having our own little National Park. Property near the ocean would have been nice but I preferred the forest because the forest is rejuvenating for me. From the reviews we have received, I think it is for others as well.
What makes this House unique
After much consideration it was decided that our Lodge would NOT have a TV. We have cell phone service and a wireless internet for people to stay connected with the world beyond the Lodge. The TV seemed to be the biggest interference for people to connect with each other when at the Lodge so we decided to go without. I think this one feature has contributed the most to the positive and rejuvenating atmosphere at the Lodge. We have games, puzzles, a piano, an outdoor fire pit, badmitten net and a trail through the woods..all activities that people enjoy doing with each other.

wonderful lodge for family
We had a good time with our children. A big Christmas tree gave us a special vibe. The neat and cozy bedrooms and living room helped us stay comfortable.
We loved the kitchen, dining, living room combo - quality of appliances and kitchen tools - the extra refrigerator, wood for the fire pit, hot tub ready to go, and great walks~ we had 12 ladies sharing the home and absolutely loved our time!
Hi. I'm glad you all had such a good time at our "retreat" in the forest. We also love it there for all the reasons you mentioned. Maybe you can come again sometime. Steve
Great house in a rural location
This house is very well stocked and laid out. The beds are excellent. The kitchen is well stocked with pots/pans/utensils.
We did note that there was some scrubbing needed around the kitchen faucet area. And, the property manager thought we had left a stain on the kitchen windowsill. That was there when we arrived.
All in all, this is an excellent place for a large group. Enjoy the fire pit, grill, deck, and hot tub. Good jumping off place for Hurricane Ridge or a drive out to Neah Bay and Cape Flattery.
Beautiful home. Wonderful place to relax. Be aware that there are no televisions. You also have to drive on gravel roads to get to the house. But it is worth the effort.
Great place for families!
The Olympic Foothills Lodge was beautifully laid out and offered more amenities than I could have expected in one vacation rental. I really appreciated how everything was labeled; it was much easier to find and to return items to their specific locations. A wonderful setting and house for visiting family to stay at and from which to enjoy our lovely Peninsula!
Hi Heidi, Thanks for the positive feedback. I am also a traveler who stays in vacation rentals quite often. Everywhere I go, there seems to be something that I wish were available; not just luxury extras but little things like toothpicks, scotch tape or a screw driver. So, I take notes and try to put these items in our Lodge. It's amazing how many things we have in our homes that don't get used that often but are essential, even when you are on vacation. Best wishes for more happy vacations. Steve
Everything you need... and maps on how to find it
Thank you for a wonderful stay. The hosts have thought of every detail— from mapping out where everything is in the kitchen, to mapping out all the explorations in the area!!
The Lodge is located in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains where there are many activities to explore. In the summer time you can go hiking, fishing, biking, beachcombing, river rafting, and swimming and also enjoy shopping, art galleries, music festivals and wine tastings. The winter season offers skiing, snow shoeing, sledding and there are many coffee houses to warm up at with a hot chocolate or latte.
Other activity’s such as antique shops, theaters and museums are also available in the area.
