Very special place

  • 5 of 5

For our annual brother and sister road trip we chose Northern CA. Arriving in Oakland from New Mexico and Florida, we drove up the coast to this most amazing Hiouchi House. After the long drive it was so nice to be able to 'arrive' and really experience the trees, birds and crystal clear river right from the house. No need to go anywhere else. Felt right at home. Great location super clean. Walking down to the river to bird watch and fish there were wild blackberries which brought by brother and I back to one of our earliest childhood memories. Very special place to reunion with family. Tons of space and privacy. Fabulous location.

excellent house in great location

  • 5 of 5

I don't usually write reviews of properties because I tend to be a bit critical than most and don't really think it's fair to impose my views on others...I'm writing one for this house because there really isn't anything negative to say. In short, it's an excellent house in a fantastic location for exploring the less-visited northern redwood forests. The house site itself is spectacular, right on the beautiful Smith River, and it's less than 15 minutes from some of the spectacular trails including Stout Grove and Boy Scout Tree Trail. Swimming is possible right in front of the house (water is of course cold), but it's a bit rocky so bring water shoes. I'm not a fisherman but I can imagine that it would be a great spot. The house is quiet, comfortable, well-appointed. This is probably one of the more fairly-priced properties where I've stayed. The area is not "touristy," so if the experience that you're looking for is quaint shops etc. the Crescent City area probably isn't for you, but if you're looking for undeveloped, not overrun with tourists, this is a great spot. One modest observation is that there is a great lunch and breakfast place within three minutes of the house, but as far as I can tell the closest restaurant open for dinner is about 15-20 minutes away. But the kitchen is very good so we just prepared meals in the house and eat on the deck overlooking the river, watching the herons and kingfishers. I would stay here again without hesitation.

Amazing home on the Smith River

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at the Hiouchi House; an amazing home on the Smith River. The house was located a few miles from Howland Hill Rd. / Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and a 10-15 minute drive to Crescent City. The house was very comfortable and we had plenty of space. We visited the Stout Grove and hiked both the Mill Creek and Boy Scout trails in the State Park. In addition, we did a full-day kayaking trip down the Smith River, which was beautiful. My kids really enjoyed spending time by the river. Thank you for sharing your home; my family had a wonderful stay / adventure. Personally I would like to return to catch salmon one day.

The view from the large deck was great! There's a large dining room table which was nice for family dinners and a place for four in the kitchen. The kitchen was well stocked and had nice appliances. Everyone had a great time!

Beautiful place for a family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 2 young kids met with my parents and siblings at the Hiouchi House this July. The house had plenty of room for all of us and comfortable living areas. We ate dinner out on the porch all 3 nights and spent lots of time playing by the river with our 3 and 6 year-old. We all loved the beautiful river setting!
