We purchased our property because of the peace, quiet and stunning ocean views.
Fresh fruits and juice (in season) and beautiful ocean views. Cool Trade Wind breezes.
This is a very overdue review, but the highlight of our year was when we stayed at Max and Tracey's cottage over the summer. It was so refreshing to be away from the tourist areas and be surrounded by so much gorgeous nature and solitude. My boyfriend and I never got to meet Tracey, but Max was a wonderful host, treating us to delicious tropical fruit from their yard and making sure we always felt at home. At one point the stove stopped working, and while we were out, Max repaired it promptly. The location is right near the Road to Hana, which we loved! It was also close to an excellent Japanese restaurant called "Nuka" that was extremely delicious, and I even got to enjoy gluten free crispy calamari which was a rare treat for my dietary restrictions. We only got to stay for 4 nights but we are dying to return! It was the perfect romantic getaway. We hope to come back to Max and Tracey's cottage someday, it was perfect :-)
I too am surprised with just one negative review of this place. We travel extensively and are not at all picky, always try to find the positive in every place we stay. We also rent multiple times a year from VRBO so have a lot to compare with.
This place is a bad trailer park quality home. The fridge, appliances, etc are all old and rusted, seem like dirty 1980s appliances. Whereas we expected there to be many geckos, there are tons of them inside, and they poop all over the walls, into your clothing, etc.. The bathroom is a small dump. We got there one evening, and my family could not wait to leave next morning due to the smell inside, the quality of everything that looks so depressing, geckos/bugs running all over, etc.. Also note there is no AC which might be typical of Hawaii, but on a hot day can make the cabin quite hot. It is also a very small cabin.
On the positive side, the view of the ocean is nice from outside. And location is convenient.
We have been preparing our trip to Maui for the last 2 years so when it came to the place to sleep I looked at the reviews of different places and we selected this one because of the high rating; only 1 bad comment! We thought he was a customer difficult to please and booked the place, but we quickly discovered he was the one that was right!
I have the same review as Tim from Wichita so I will not write all the same things as him, go read his, but the main thing is: it is dirty and it smells. I get that it's tropical forest and that geckos are part of it (we were prepared for that part), but old gecko's poop does not have to be part of it; windows, walls and patio are full of it and believe me it's old stuff and it stinks. I was embarassed to tell that to the owner so we purchased 2 air freshener to get rid of the odor and we cleaned the kitchen shelve where there was the most poop. Every morning we would put back all our clothes in our luggage and close it so no ants and no poop would get on it because we found some "new poop" on the bed linen on the second day. Also remember to wear your slippers at all times because if not, you'll walk in it since there is always 2 or 3 geckos on the walls or the ceiling! . Also no paper towels, no napkins, no kleenex, no surface cleaner which is a given normally... Moldy hooks for some of the shower curtain, moldy plugs for sink and bath... This place is located in a humid part of Maui so with good care and a lot of cleaning regularly it would be fine, but for now it's impossible that's it's the case. We tought about asking for a refund of simply leaving and find another place, but we came to the conclusion that it was only to sleep and only for a week so we made the best of it and stayed. We have been renting places through VRBO and other sites for the last 10 years and it's the first time we are truly disappointed, it was not worth what we spent on it. The view is great on a sunny day and you'll get a few free fruits; does it compensate? Absolutly not!! Honeymooners, you will not get in the mood to consume your love there, believe me!!! Lucky for us, except for that, the rest of our trip was extra even though we arrived in the middle of a tropical storm!
Mahalo for sharing your beautiful home with us! We truly enjoyed every moment here (even though not nearly long enough with running around each day). We loved the convenient location to hop on the road to Hana as well as to head west to the beaches and up to the volcano. Paia is such a great little town and so close. The house was in great shape and Tracey was so pleasant to deal with. The property is beautiful and peaceful to sit on the porch and enjoy the fresh air each day and the ocean breezes. Thanks again!
We had a very pleasant 2 week stay at Max and Tracy's place, not to forget our very special friend Buttercup. The accommodations were very adequate and clean. Biggest perks were the peace and tranquility in the mornings and evenings on the deck with a distant ocean view and swaying palm trees. Away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist meccas. Being able to pick your own oranges and other fruit to make fresh juice every morning was just great, juicer was provided. We will definitely stay there again!
My wife and I stayed with Max for 8 nights and really enjoyed our stay. The property is amazing and looking outside in the morning into the ocean is priceless. Max was a great host, and even let us borrow his gas grill. My wife and I "grilled and chilled" a few nights using the gas grill. Thanks Max. The room has plenty of room, the refrigerator is large enough to fully stock for the week. The bed was comfortable as well. Max also provided beach equipment, towels, umbrella, ice cooler, beach chairs, etc. You will be about 20 minutes by vehicle from Haiku marketplace. This stay was amazing. Ready to go back in 2016.
