About the property

House, 7 Bedrooms + Den, 4.5 Baths, (Sleeps 14-16)

Take a step back in time. Back when Jokerville, Teocali and Peanut were mines instead of ski runs. Back when the Company Store was actually owned by the mine company. Back when a single gas stove on each side provided the only heat for the large two-story duplex on Elk Avenue. And the cooking was done on a cast iron wood stove.

By the mid-1950s, the mines were closing and the outlook for Crested Butte looked grim. D.A. and Altha Hunt (affectionately known by family and friends as Poncho and Blossom) came to the area to do some uranium prospecting and fell in love with the beauty of the area, the cool summertime temperatures, and the opportunity to indulge in a land time forgot and decided to buy the big yellow duplex. They added bathrooms in former closets on both sides of the duplex and a tradition began.

Soon their whole family was coming to escape the Texas heat. They discovered autumn afforded spectacular beauty as the aspen leaves shook in vivid yellows. The trout fishing in the mountain streams and lakes is second to none. Then came the ski area and they were back for skiing at the premiere ski resort in the Rockies.

Now, you and your family can create one of a kind memories that will last a lifetime as well. Extensive remodeling has enlarged the house to seven full bedrooms and four and a half baths. The kitchen features a full-size oven and two dishwashers. You will appreciate many things about the house like its proximity to shuttle service, washer and dryer availability, two water heaters so the hot water keeps on coming, satellite television with the latest flat screen LCD, and many beautiful antique furnishings, some of which are original to the house when purchased back in the mid-1950s.

Each room has electric blankets and a furnace heats the downstairs allowing that warmth to rise to the second and third floors above. Open windows on the upper floors keep you cool in the summertime.

Hiking, biking, and jeep trails surround Crested Butte. You will relish the quaint shopping experience along Elk Avenue and beyond and some of the best nationally recognized restaurants anywhere. Book your vacation now in a true Victorian home that has become an icon of the town and is over 110 years old. It is one of the only residential houses left on Elk Ave. So winter, summer or fall you are in the heart of all the fun in historic downtown Crested Butte!

About David Hunt

The Hunt Family has owned and enjoyed this home since the mid 1950s traveling on a regular basis from their homes in Texas to enjoy the cool mountain air and activities of Gunnison County. Five generations have grown up loving this historic beauty.

David Hunt purchased this house in 1955

Why David Hunt chose Crested Butte Area

What makes this house unique

Hiking, biking, and jeep trails surround Crested Butte. You will relish the quaint shopping experience along Elk Avenue and beyond and some of the best nationally recognized restaurants anywhere. Book your vacation now in a true Victorian home that has become an icon of the town and is over 100 years old. It is one of the only residential houses left on Elk Ave. So winter, summer or fall you are in the heart of all the fun in historic downtown Crested Butte! The Hunt's house is located right in the middle of town at 4th and Elk Ave. next to the 'License Plate Plaza' and across the street from Donita's Cantina. Just around the corner is Camp 4 Coffee for that early morning latte. Summer or winter you can walk to all the restaurants and shopping in town. During the winter, the bus to the Mt. Crested Butte area is just a short walk down 4th street. Why not start your own family tradition today?

Sorry to be so late on this but I wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed your home. There was more than enough room for two families.

Could not have asked for a more perfect location, and the weather was great. Corky was very responsive with arranging for the leaky sink(Lurch was great) and replacing the coffeepot that we tried very hard to clean out.

If we ever return to CB we would love to stay there again. You have everything needed, well equipped kitchen and comfortable space.

Thanks again. I can see why our children love Crested Butte. Colorado is a beautiful state and CB is a wonderful town.

Quirky and comfortable! Great location. Perfect for families.

  • 5 of 5

Family of 6 had a blast in this Victorian house. It was warm and fun for our young kids. The convenience to the bus, stores and restaurants was wonderful! We didn't use a car once. Plenty of room for a large group. The recently renovated kitchen with the huge long table was our favorite.

Owner's Response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay at "The Hunt House". This grand old house has been making unforgettable memories for families since my grandfather discovered it in 1955 and bought it (with no plumbing or electricity). It is the prefect house for large groups. And the farmhouse table in the kitchen was custom built with seating large groups in mind. Come create your own magical memories in "The Hunt House"!

Great house with the best location in CB! Plenty of room for multiple families. Walking distance to everything in the downtown area and easy bus or bike ride to mountain base. House was recently remodeled with great kitchen and living area. Fantastic place to relax in the summer!

The Grand Reopening!

  • 5 of 5

Our family rented the newly remodeled Hunt Home for the Crested Butte Bike Week Festival. The home is truly impressive. The Hunts and the contractor have done a superior job of remodeling while honoring the Victorian feel of the home. The kitchen is large, bright, and extremely functional for a big group. (Two dishwashers and two sinks--woohoo!) The bedrooms are large with comfy beds. The rear of the home has a grill and plenty of parking space. The front porch is fabulous for people watching and social gatherings; the location is perfect. We were so happy with the Hunt Home that we booked it again!

Summer Vacation at the Hunt House

  • 5 of 5

Our whole family had a great time! Plenty of room for everyone. Kitchen big enough to cook for all and a table big enough to seat us. All of quaint and busy Cested Butte's shops and eateries just out the front door. We went fishing, hiking, swimming, mountain biking, ate good ice cream, and slept well. What more do you need. I highly recommend it.

Another great family vacation at the Hunt House

  • 5 of 5

3rd annual family vacation at the Hunt House and we all had an excellent time. The house is perfectly located on Elk Ave where you can sit on the front porch and visit with the locals and tourists. The

house is large enough to hold us and 7 adult kids and 5 grandkids. CB is wonderful, having vac there many years, but the Hunt House makes it excellent!

Rickety and old but right in downtown! So affordable for 3 families to share. The house was stocked with everything we needed. David, the owner was so responsive to all my emails.
