Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Sofa, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 7-9)

Fenced back yard with a downstairs patio for BBQ and relaxing in the evenings. The back is arranged so you can open the door, and let 'em out in the mornings without leaving your bedroom! Back arranged so your fur babies' can have plenty of shade.

Get up and have your coffee inside, on the front deck, or downstairs with your pets. Then, take just a few steps (careful crossing the street) to the beautiful white sand beaches for an early walk or dip in the Gulf. I would recommend waiting until the evening before taking your pets for a swim - then, leash them & keep them under control. There is a shower downstairs where you can wash off the sand and salt before you go back inside.

Use the full kitchen to fix your meals, or choose one of the many fine restaurants in the area. Or,if you like Pizza, they can have it there in just a little while.

About William F. Tompkins, III

I'm an 'old Coot' of a great-grandfather. I was raised in Hondo, Texas, graduated from The University of Texas, and currently live in a small community just outside of San Antonio, Texas.

William F. Tompkins, III purchased this house in 2009

Why William F. Tompkins, III chose Gulf Shores

I became familiar with Gulf Shores many years ago during a fraternity event following a football game between Alabama & The University. The town, as well as the beaches, are beautiful! When this property became available after I retired (and had the means) I snatched it up!

What makes this house unique

I fell in love with this property because of the beautiful beach! Texas may be heaven on earth, but our beaches, except for South Padre Island, are nowhere near as beautiful.

West End Rocks!

  • 5 of 5

Excluding last year, we have stayed at Ariels' Beach House in September since 2013. We noticed several upgrades, including new grass in the backyard for the doggies and the back deck completely rebuilt with new stairs that made it easier for my husband's 91 yr old father to climb when he visited us from Pensacola! We love our "dog house" at Gulf Shores! See you next year!

Perfect place for our family and pets!

  • 5 of 5

This is a great, quite location for our family. The fenced in back yard was perfect for our pets.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Overall I really enjoyed my stay. The location was great and the home was large enough to accommodate our party of 10. The only suggestions I have is to offer a few beach chairs and towels for use. Because we traveled from Wisconsin we did not have room to bring extra things. Just a few beach items would have been the push to rate this place with five stars rather than 4.

Owner's Response: This was a good review. Beach items are not supplied by the owner, and this information is available on the listing - although it may be hard to notice, sometimes. There are several business places that offer beach items for sale, or for rent.

Any beach time is a good thing

  • 4 of 5

A short getaway but overall fantastic to be at the beach with family ......property was as described ......fairly clean......just across the street from beach ......could see beach from deck.....first time to go in July ....Will probably not book in July again ....very busy...restaurants packed.....weather not so good.....but that is always a gamble on the coast.

Good location but needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

Our family recently stayed at this location and the reviews are mixed. We definitely loved the location, right across from beach access and not too far down from some restaurants and shops. We loved the layout and the backyard was nice to have. The water pressure was always good as well as no problems running out of hot water which could have been an issue with 9 of us but it never was. There were three nice sized bathrooms.

The issues that need addressed are that overall it is just not the cleanest place. On first impression it was like oh wow, the windows are the dirty, the baseboards are gross, the vents were all nasty. A heavy layer of dust was noted on several things. It seems to me that whoever does the cleaning does not do ANY deep cleaning but rather a light once over. I realize this is a dog friendly property and not going to be sparkling clean but it definitely could be better. Other things worth noting are... there were someone else's shower razor and soap left over in the downstairs bath which makes you question was the shower even cleaned? The TP roll holders upstairs and down kept falling off the wall (again not a deal breaker but just a nuisance that would be easy to have fixed), the pots and pans in the kitchen really need replaced but are workable. My husband and father in law tightened the screws on the bar stools I don't know how many times and they still wiggled and made you feel like you may fall. In the upstairs bedroom with the balcony the ceiling fan would only work if you gave it a jump start each time with your hand and it couldn't be on high or it would wobble so much you thought it may fly off, and the furniture on the upstairs balcony needs replacing badly. Most importantly I feel the need to mention the beds. The two actual beds are just fine. The bunk bed was definitely not good. The top mattress really can't be called a mattress. The 6 year old couldn't lay on it without feeling the bars on his back through it, it was so thin. Also the bed squeaked so much with someone on top you couldn't sleep so we moved the mattress to the floor. The downstairs pull out mattress was just as bad and gross. We ended up putting an air mattress on top of it for comfort. The frame was also broke on one side so without the air mattress on top it would have fell through in that spot.

This place had it's perks and was not a total bust but could definitely use some attention. We would stay again if it were updated & deep cleaned.

Great dog-friendly location

  • 5 of 5

This property is exactly what you would expect for a dog-friendly house. It's well-worn but clean enough, and the yard is great - so hard to find not only a house where pets are welcome, but one with a fenced yard too. Appreciated not having to walk to laundry services as well. The kitchen is equipped, but the pots and pans are pretty worn if that matters to you. Also, good sand-catcher rugs at the front and back would help. You have to walk through sand and gravel after hosing off downstairs, which made it tough to keep the place even halfway clean. We bought a cheap broom and called it good. With the beach right across the street, we didn't spend much time inside anyway! Would definitely stay again.
