The Blue Door on the 'Île d'Or' with a magnificent view on the château d'Amboise

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4-6)

Amboise is unique in that it has the only inhabited island on the Loire River. The Blue Door is located on this island just across from the Chateau d'Amboise so it provides an incredible view of the river and castle. From the apartment you can listen to the Loire River rushing by and gaze at the chateau. You can be in the center of town with a pleasant 2-minute walk. And after a long day of sightseeing in the region, the Blue Door is the perfect place to unwind.

The loft comfortably sleeps 4-6 people in two bedrooms and on a sofa bed. The open living room and dining room combination with its exposed beams is a nice place for socializing. The kitchen is small but functional, with everything you need to prepare meals. The apartment offers a portable air conditioning unit and a dishwasher, as well as a washer and dryer just downstairs. Free parking is available close to the apartment.

From the Blue Door you can see a lot without a car since it is only a 10-minute walk to the train station. Since I stopped teaching in September 2012, I am now available to take you on excursions. We can design these together around the sights you'd like to see.

Amboise is the perfect place for exploring the Loire Valley, one of the most beautiful areas of France (with the chateaux of Chenonceau, Villandry, Chambord, and others). But there is much more to do than just the castles. Canoeing on the river; visiting the city of Tours, biking along the Loire, taking a hot air balloon ride, visiting the weekly markets...and for children...just down the street from the apartment is a summer swimming pool, a playground with zip line, mini golf, and small beaches.

I always respond quickly to requests, even if I do not have availability. If you do not hear from me right away, please check your spam or junk mail to see if my reply is there.

About Chantal Salvaudon

I have lived in Amboise for 30 years and feel lucky to be living in a place that I think is one of the most beautiful in the world! I was a middle school teacher for many years, but always spent much of my free time renovating old houses. I love learning the history of old buildings and of this region in general.

What makes this house unique

The unobstructed view of the Chateau d'Amboise with Loire River rushing past is magnificent. There are few rentals that can provide such a wonderful view of an ancient chateau. The Blue Door is also perfectly situated for exploring Amboise and the region, with or without a car.

Great little place.

My family of 5 stayed here for 3 nights. My wife and I and our 12, 8, and 6 year old kids. We loved it and loved the hostess. She was great.

great falls

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Porte Bleu. Or hostess, Chantal was very accommodating and put forth extra effort to make our stay comfortable. The apartment is comfortably furnished with a well equipped kitchen and comfortable bed. The street has virtually no traffic and is quiet. We were very happy to have great wifi available. The location is exceptional. The views of the castle are lovely. We were fortunate to be treated to a light show in the evenings and mother nature contributed a rainbow. The Amboise area is a great base for visiting the Loire Chateaux. The apartment is a great value, it even has a dishwasher and a shared washer and dryer, not to mention bikes to borrow. Definitely recommend it.

Amazing location, spacious unit with a few quirks

  • 4 of 5

We chose this rental for the island location and the view of the castle. We are glad we did. We got the downstairs unit which we suspect may have the best views and we were thrilled. The unit is well equipped and generally comfortable.

It did take us some effort to master the windows, but once you learn how to close them fully (or close them partially with 1/2 open for more air) everything works fine. We think we were there in a period with some kind of white moth...if we had the lights on and the windows open, every light was swarming with them. As soon as we shut the shutters, they were gone. Wierd.

While we really liked the place we suspect it is not for everyone. Hence the 4* rating rather than a 5*

Great stay at La Porte Bleue!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at La Porte Bleue in March 2016.

Chantal was amazing to deal with while booking her property. Her English is great, much better than my French! We stayed upstairs in her apartment. It is a 2 bedroom apartment with a nice living room, dining room and kitchen. The rooms are comfortable and the view is spectacular!

Chantal will spend time discussing her passion, which is the history and beauty of the Loire Valley. She tells you about excellent restaurants as well which you might pass on.

We rented a car in Paris and drove down to Amboise (pro tip- tollways only take Euros, no non French cards), so as to have maximum flexibility to visit local chateaus. We loved walking the town and trying new restaurants. La Forchette and La Cene (Ironically an Italian restaurant) were among our favorites. Make sure you go to the wine tasting at The Cave as well. There is a HUGE local outdoor market on Saturdays as too.

Chantal's absurdly affordable apartment is a perfect location to explore this amazing region.

Amazing View

  • 5 of 5

On our arrival I was immediately enchanted with the location. I could have sat for hours looking out at the river and Amboise Chateaux - no words can begin to describe how amazing the location and the view are. The first three nights we stayed in the lower apartment and then the next two nights we stayed in the upper apartment. Our adult son joined us the last two nights and the upper apartment was very comfortable for the three of us with two bedrooms and plenty of space. I am so thankful when I inquired on this property that Chantal didn't tell me that our dates wouldn't work but instead gave us the choice of moving upstairs in the middle of our stay because I don't think we could have found anything better than this. She made the move very easy for us - she had us leave our stuff packed up and she moved it herself upstairs after those guests had departed and the apartment was clean. We came back at the end of our day to find everything moved we couldn't have asked for an easier transition. The lower apartment was my favorite as we could just step out the front door or sit on the steps and drink in the views. However, the upstairs apartment had the same great views - we just couldn't step outside or sit on the steps - and it had two bedrooms, which worked great since our son arrived at that point. Both apartments were comfortable and well stocked and had everything we needed. We went to the Market on Sunday and loaded up with local produce and food and we cooked simple but delicious meals every night in the apartments. The kitchen was adequately equipped for us to cook and it was a way for us to save some money and enjoy the view each night as we watched the sun set and the lights begin to twinkle on across the river. Each morning as we ate our breakfast we watched the sunrise over the river and the chateaux. The location is perfect - Amboise is almost smack center in the Loire Valley and close to everything we wanted to see. Chantal was vey helpful, energetic and a wonderful host, giving us lots of ideas and information about local restaurants and things to see and do. Amboise itself was very convenient - walking distance to the Castle and Leonardo da Vinci's last residence, as well as lots of restaurants, grocery store, bank etc. The Market on Sunday was a delight and we thoroughly enjoyed spending several hours there. A definite YES to staying here.

Beautifully restored and wonderfully hosted place to stay.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Chantal in La Porte Bleue. The place is directly on the river, in walking distance to the chateau, shopping and the city.
