The Zapatillas Islands are a 10 minute boat ride, and the rainforest is a short walk from our backyard. Although this is not a beachfront lot, the beach is still only footsteps away! About The Owner

We purchased our lot in 2005 when there were only 3 houses on this stretch of beach. Completed in 2008, our house is now one of 8 houses in our small neighborhood. We also have new neighbors - the Azul Paradise ecotourism resort - which provides a restaurant and snackbar, bar, clubhouse and other amenities such as wifi, kayaks, and outings. Our small piece of paradise has changed a good bit since we first started coming here, but these changes have been greatly beneficial for the nearby Ngobe village and for our guests. Although you can now stayed connected to home and work through technology (should you care to do so) and purchase a meal or have a drink at the bar, we are still quite remote and an excellent place to kick back, relax, and get away from it all albeit with a little more ease and comfort.

The Owner purchased this house in 2008

Why The Owner chose Bastimentos Island

We wanted an island home that was off the beaten path, surrounded by the beauty of the Caribbean and the lush rainforest.

What makes this house unique

Ocean recreation such as snorkeling, diving, surfing, sea kayaking, fishing or just lounging in a hammock or sitting under a palm tree with a good book await. For those interested in jungle exploration, photography, birding, wildlife watching, hiking, it's all right here.

Panama at its best

  • 5 of 5

This terrific house was home to three couples for five nights in early April, and it could not have been better. The house was exceptionally clean and well equipped, and with three bathrooms, was perfect for our group. The large front porch was our favourite hangout. The staff at Azul Paradise resort next door, which manages the house, treated us like their own guests. And the best part was that because we had access to resort amenities, we had the best of both worlds - private accommodation and kitchen facilities but we used the resort restaurants when we didn't feel like cooking. We took advantage of the resort's snorkelling excursion packages and, for a group of scuba divers like ourselves, we were very impressed. The snorkelling was better than many of our dives. If you rent the house, don't miss the opportunity to visit Salt Creek and take a jungle tour. The beach was beautiful, the water was warm and the resident howler monkey was entertaining. It could not have been a better Panama experience.

Exceptional jungle island adventure

  • 5 of 5

This wonderful place hosted our family of eight adults for a holiday adventure and met all of our expectations. The house is a perfect vacation home. Four bedrooms. Huge great room with two-story vaulted ceiling. Plus a huge porch under the roof of the house where we ate dinner. Well equipped kitchen. The house is located next to azul paradise, a small Eco-resort and here's the best thing: you are treated ad a guest of the resort so you get access to all of their water sports equipment and excursions. The spectacular beach is a stone's throw from the house. The Indian village of salt creek is a 10 minute kayak ride away. Their tour of the jungle is a bit on the muddy side but a cool adventure. Snorkeling was best at coral caye. Surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming are all right there. Jungle island adventure or serious getaway are perfect for this spot.

A stunning stay

  • 5 of 5

We had booked Casa dos Amores without knowing anything about Panama in general or the Bocas region in particular. After our stay in Casco Viejo in Panama City and a sailing tour round the San Blas islands, we didn't know what to expect of Isla Bastimentos. We really thought it could not get any better. But, it did.

The house was spacious, just a hundred meteres off the beach. In front of it there was this small lagoon with palm trees. Even with 5 adults we had more than enough room to live, sit and move around. The porch was huge with a hammock on either side. We rented the house and although there was always the possibility to cook in a modern kitchen, we were allowed to have breakfast, dinner, drinks and more at a bar only a two minute stroll away from us. For those who cannot really disconnect there is Wifi and the possibillity to pay plastic. This bar is part of a greater project. Next to it, the managers of Casa dos Amores, Erni and Marty Williams, are realizing a dream project: 10 bungalows on the water, a restaurant, a gift shop and a grocery store.

The three bedrooms and three bathrooms of Casa dos Amores were clean and tidy. The service from Erni and Marty Williams was more than perfect. They were easygoing and very helpful. The staff of Azul Paradise (www.azulparadise.com) were all locals from a small village called Salt Creek. They were always there to host all the activities - with all their 'island knowledge' - we wanted to do: seven kinds of jungle tours starting at the village, a snorkling trips to sites which are world listed, surfing lessons, etc., etc.

So don't hesitate to go there now world tourism has not really landed on Isla Bastimentos yet.

Best vacation by far

  • 5 of 5

If you like the "off the beaten path" type of vacation this is for you. We have been a lot of places in the tropics and this was by far the best vacation of them all. There was no large crowds that we had to follow from attraction to attraction. We pretty much did things on our own. In fact on our walks down the beach we might only see 4 other people. The natural uncomercalized surroundings where unbelievable.

Growing up as a boater I am a stickler for boat safty. Our boat driver matolie was not only one of the nicest and most knowledgable guys you could ask for he was a very safe and experienced captin. Late one afternoon we asked if he would take my 7 year old son and I out to fish for dinner. He said " no problem, jump in". We went out about 2 miles and in less than a minute my son was reeling in a small tuna. Within 40 minutes we had dinner for our family and one other. It was a great memory and a great dinner.

Another great part of this trip was engulfing ourselves in with the natives and the culture. They are a truly kind and interesting.

If you like surfing there were a lot of options from a place easy enough for my 4 year old to difficult enough for an expert.

Overall I don't know how to sum it up well enough in words but when we asked our two young boys if they would like to go back there or go back to Disney they said with out hesitation they want to go back to panama. My wife and I can not find a time soon enough to go back. The only complaint we had was we did not go long enough.

Cool solar powered house and great location

  • 5 of 5

All the superlatives I've read in the other reviews I would agree with. We're a family of 4 with kids 10 and 8. Grandmother also came along and had a great time too. We spent 4 nites here after 2 nites in Boquete and 2 nights in Boca Chica. They were all fantastic. Great country to visit for sure. Next time I'm coming straight back to Bastimentos and this place. We slept well and had a nice breeze, the temperature during the days was warm but not brutal and at night it was surprising how much it cooled off. We played board games on the porch for hours at night.

I was impressed with the solar and water/septic installations and the luxury of all the appliances. Not bad for being off the grid and in the jungle. We didn't have any significant bug problems other than some deer flies at times on the porch. All the doors and windows are beautifully screened/venetian blinds, built from local wood. The location of this house away from the main beach is good in giving you privacy from the busy beachfront locations. Yes, you lose the view but you can always walk 1 minute and be at the beach, or 2 minutes and be at the beach bar..

We did boat excursions each of the three full days we were there. A visit to the Zapatillos is mandatory, go early for the whole day. Snorkel the patch reefs, mind the strong current. The sponges, soft coral and invertebrate life on the reefs was incredible at Cayo Crawl. A visit to Redfrog beach is pretty much mandatory too. The zipline and obstacle course was great and challenging, well built. The beach is ridiculously nice. We had woodfired pizza at Las Palmas down the beach a bit.

The beach at the property is pretty shallow and was a bit murky during out visit. Fine for cooling off and pretty easy waves. We did most of our swimming on our outings, which just means that you have to take an awesome boat ride in the tropics. Take a slow nighttime walk down the beach and into the palm forest (bring a powerful headlamp).

We all loved the house and kayaks and the help from Michael and would recommend this place to fellow travelers. Panama was a great travel experience for our family.

Wonderful

  • 5 of 5

This was one of the best vacations we have ever had! I dont have to write a lengthy review because absolutely everything was great. The caretakers went above and beyond for us, the owner was super helpful and the house was beautiful.

The caretakers were available to take us on any type of excursion we wanted but staying on the beautiful quiet beach that we had almost all to ourselves was our favorite way to spend the days. It was so relaxing and peacful, a great place for people wanting to slow down.
