Memories of your vineyard stay will last long after your reluctant good-byes. The owners' California Craftman home, built in 1910, was moved to the property in 1980 in two pieces from downtown Solvang, elevated, and the vacation unit built below. This lower level is bathed in sunlight off a flagstone patio complete with gas BBQ and cushioned armchairs around a glass-topped, umbrella table. French doors open to an inviting living room boasting a cozy window seat niche and deep, comfortable furniture. The den has a large collection of books, flatscreen TV, and iHome docking station for your iPod. The kitchen with granite countertops opens to its own covered patio and is a perfect setting to prepare your picnic lunch for the long-awaited wine tour or just the simple pleasure of morning coffee or tea. With one bedroom and two bathrooms, the serenity of your sleep is assured in the comfortable bed surrounded by gardens and vineyard.

With view of Santa Ynez Mountains, take a 10 minute walk to the YMCA or a 5 minute walk to gourmet market, coffee shop and deli with catering service. Bring your bicycle and enjoy miles of beautiful pastoral riding in the Santa Ynez Valley. So come away from your world for awhile to this quiet and gentle place in Solvang wine country in our comfortable spacious 1000 square foot suite.

About Rafael and Maria Maldonado, Jr.

In1970, we moved to the Santa Barbara area from Washington, D.C. with the dream of some day living in a place like this, with room to grow flowers, fruit trees and wine grapes. We purchased our 1910 California Craftsman home on an acre in Solvang in 1999. Maria got her dream home and Rafael got his dream property where he would plant a vineyard.

Maria paints nature-inspired watercolors and designs jewelry, weaves baskets in the Chumash Indian tradition, and uses found objects to create birdhouses among other crafts. Rafael, whose vocation and avocation is photography, chronicles the seasonal rhythms of the Santa Ynez Valley flora and fauna. We both work the vineyard and make the wine from the several red Rhone varietals we grow . Our greatest joy is to share our haven with family, friends, and visitors.

We look forward to welcoming you to our Vineyard Home.

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Rafael and Maria's home in Solvang was exceptional. Everything was spotless, extremely well supplied, and charmingly decorated. We wanted for nothing. There was even a bookcase of books and many cozy spots throughout the house to curl up. In addition we had our own private patio and place to view the stars at night or dine outside. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer!

Wonderful Place!

  • 5 of 5

What warm, friendly, and amenable hosts Rafael and Maria are! Our private quarters below the main house (where they live) were so comfortable and beautifully decorated. We especially enjoyed the incredible artwork (photography and watercolors) which they themselves created and displayed in our "home away from home". Every amenity was provided and very corner of the place was immaculate. One night we decided to stay "home" and cook our own dinner. We were surprised to realize after shopping that there is no oven or stovetop but we made do with their great barbecue, microwave and fine assortment of kitchen supplies. We ate on the covered patio in the cool breeze. We enjoyed a great dinner with a complimentary bottle of wine from their vineyard. Our weekend was relaxing, quiet, comforting, and so pleasant.

Great place to stay in wine country

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful setting, close to wineries & town. Hosts are great, and wine from the vineyard was good. All the little amenities are provided. We did miss having a stove and if the weather had been hotter, AC would have been a must. Did have fans. Only reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

A Taste of Santa Ynez Just Outside Your Door!

  • 5 of 5

If you are into wine, this your place! What attracted us to Solvang was the proximity to the Santa Ynez wine growing region. Many wineries are within easy access to "A Vineyard Home" which made our daily excursions even more convenient!

This location proved to be a great home base for exploring the Santa Ynez Valley. We visited 3-4 wineries per day, then took a break to explore Morro Bay where we had an excellent seafood lunch (The Galley), walked on the beach, and having no other place to put them, filled our shoes with sand dollars!

Quaint villages line the highways along the wine route, providing great restaurants, Danish pastry shops, and interesting places to visit. The El Rancho Market, within walking distance from the apartment, and provided us with terrific options for prepared meals as well as groceries.

The apartment itself is so very different from a typical hotel stay. We experienced a little bit of Santa Ynez in the backyard as we were surrounded by the small vineyard on the property, bluebirds, and beauty of the yard in a relaxed, safe setting. We spent mornings wandering through the grapevines in our jammies with coffee in hand!

In the summer, days can be quite warm, however, in the evening the temperature cools quickly and those California ocean breezes filter through the apartment making sipping wine on the patio, or sleeping, wonderful!

The unexpected benefit of this rental was the warm welcome we received from our hosts, Rafael and Maria. Rafael was kind enough to explain the intricacies of managing a small vineyard and wine production on a limited scale. Rafael and Maria are excellent hosts, recommending several venues which greatly enhanced our stay in the area.

And as Arnie says, "We'll be back!"
