About John and Sandy Thomas

Sandy and I fell in love with Costa Rica many years ago and finally purchased our own villa to fully experience the beauty and romance of the Costa Rican North West coast. We alternate between Naples FL and Bahia Pez Vela every year and enjoy sharing our villa with others who can appreciate those special memories in life.

John and Sandy Thomas purchased this villa in 2007

Why John and Sandy Thomas chose Costa Rica

Like many North American visitors, we researched the entire coastline of Costa Rica before discovering Bahia Pez Vela within the tiny community of Playa Ocotal, well off the beaten path. In fact, we actually found this beautiful piece of paradise while exploring and walking along the Pacific shoreline.

wonderful condo at playa ocotal

  • 5 of 5

Our family fell in love with Costa Rica- staying at Playa Ocotal was wonderfuly and relaxing. John and Sandy were the most accomodating and outgoing condo owners we have ever rented from. The condo was spacious, clean, gorgeous views, wonderful pools( the beach, black sandy, was jusy ok)- we felt safe in CR compared with Belize the year before. Need a car to get to restaurants but we had a driver take us to Montervede for an exciting overnight experience.

I'm sure that we could have done more in the area but we had terrific sunny days and all we wanted to do was read and relax by the pool. Seranaded by monkeys which was fun. We were a family of 5 with all grown kids. Everyone had an amazing time.

Amazing, Relaxing, and Absolutely Perfect

  • 5 of 5

We decided to take a last minute vacation to Costa Rica. I absolutely fell in love with this property. I noticed that it was not available during the week that we wanted to go. I reached out to John and he rearranged his schedule for us. I could not believe that someone would be so kind and rearrange their life for us. John was very accommodating and extremely kind. He made us feel at ease.

This property is absolutely perfect!!! It is in the perfect location. All the houses are separated. We had our privacy and I felt secure because they have staff at the entrance gate at all times. There was an infinity pool steps away from the property. We spent almost every night in the pool watching the most amazing sunsets. There is another pool just down a small hill. That pool was great also. Our kids had a great time swimming while we ate at the restaurant, Picante. The restaurant has an open concept and we sat close to the pool to watch our children play. The food is delicious at Picante. We had most of our meals here. The staff at the restaurant were extremely kind and accommodating. They always had our best interest at heart and we felt like family before we left.

I highly recommend this property. Everything was perfect. The entire house was fully furnished and had everything that we needed. We lacked for nothing. The master bedroom has a beautiful balcony and we watched the sun rise over the Pacific Ocean. It was Heaven! We heard the howler monkeys many afternoons and we could hear many birds singing. It was such a cool experience. There is black sand beach steps from the property. It is beautiful!

The downtown area was great and we felt very safe. Everyone in Costa Rica is very kind. We went shopping and ate at many of the local restaurants. We took the river tour and saw lots of crocodiles, iguanas, birds, and monkeys. We took a rain forest tour. It was very educational and beautiful. We highly recommend Wilsons Ranch! It was one of the highlights of our trip. We rode the horses through the country side and through the rain forest. We hooked the horses up, hiked through the rain forest, and swam in the most beautiful hidden turquoise river. We went fishing and caught over 50 fish (not kidding), we went snorkeling, we went to Tamarindo and swam in the warmest water, and we went to Diamante. We had the time of our lives.

Rent a car!!!

You can't go wrong with this Villa! It was a taste of heaven. Thank you, John for everything!!! The Millers

Just Paradise !!

  • 5 of 5

Playa Ocotal, the surrounding area, and in particular Bahia Pez Vela, is a wonderful and relaxing place to visit. Our favourite of the three places we have stayed in Costa Rica.

John and Sandy are very accommodating and helpful. They were prompt in responding to all our questions and provided many useful tips and suggestions. The same can be said of Cesar and Jaqueline, the onsite property managers.

The 3 bedroom villa is spacious, well decorated, and comfortable with beautiful panoramic views of the bay. The kitchen has everything you require, even for a long term visit. The Villa has an abundance of towels, dishes, linens and everything you require for a comfortable stay. There is a washer, dryer and a good sized safe, although we never felt any security risk. The Wi-Fi works well, there is a good “music player” with many CD’s available, or link via Bluetooth to your device. There is a TV, but we never found the time to turn it on. Another bonus, unlike many other places we have stayed, you can actually drink the tap water.

The property itself is “gated”, has multiple swimming pools, a wonderful black sand beach that is a short, but steep, walk down the hill (good exercise), and an on-site restaurant, Picante, that is well worth a visit or two. The infinity pool, just steps from the villa and overlooking the ocean, is a great place to relax. I would be remiss not to mention that all the staff on site, everyone, was just fantastic, very cheerful and went out of their way to be helpful.

We flew into Liberia Airport, at around midday, where Cesar had very kindly arranged for us to pick up a rental car. We had no problem finding the villa, but at night it could be “tricky” if you do not have GPS or are not accustomed to driving in that environment. I would strongly recommend having a car. US dollars are accepted just about everywhere. The supermarkets give a good rate but for restaurants, etc. it would be better to exchange funds at the many banks/money changers available.

The nearest town, Playas del Coco, is a great place to visit and hang out. There are several restaurants/bars worth a visit. Our favourites were: Zi Lounge, fish dinner at Papagayo, Bamboo Beach Bar & Grill, and just hanging out at Coconutz. Father Rooster's, just down from the villa is also very nice – try their margaritas!

There are many “day trips” you can make from the villa, including some nice beaches. But you will soon ask yourself – when you are in paradise, why leave? Pura Vida!!

Everything We Hoped For

  • 5 of 5

Simply a fantastic week! A beautiful hilltop view of Ocatal Beach, our first morning we eased into the day by sitting on the patio overlooking the ocean, enjoying our Costa Rican coffee and meeting our new monkey friends...and it only got better from there.

Bahia Pez Vela is a terrific spot. Great views, multiple swimming pools, a quick walk down to the beach, nearby restaurants, easy access to the nearest town Cocoa Beach and the Liberia International Airport. John and Sandy are wonderful hosts and had everything prepared as promised for our stay. We had six adults in the villa and had more than enough room to have a cocktail, cook some dinner, have another cocktail...and relax. The villa was well appointed, had all necessary supplies like coffee maker, pots & pans, grill, towels, etc. It's exactly as you see in the pictures and is your own slice of paradise (for a week or so.) Cesar and the staff at Bahia Pez Vela were also very helpful in lining up tours, excursions and taxis. I highly recommend Costa Rica and John & Sandy's villa. If I could rate it 5 Stars + I would!

Family Adventure . . . Pura Vida!

  • 5 of 5

Bahia Pez Vela is a quiet, peaceful resort of 40 villas with its own beach area and amazing restaurant Picante. John and Sandy’s villa is beautifully decorated and comfortable. Plenty spacious for our group. The kitchen is well appointed with anything you could need. It was also nice to have a laundry and a safe to store valuables. The Villa had a good supply of towels both for showering and for the beach. Did I mention the view? Stunning! It was very nice to have the pool up on the ridge by the house. There was no one there and we had it all to our self. As we are all very “connected” the wifi in the house worked great.

We flew into Libera Airport. Have Cesar arrange a shuttle to pick you up especially if arriving after dark. The villa is only about 30 minutes (4 adults 4 kids $70) from the airport but the roads are a little tricky the first time in the dark between Coco Beach and the villa. You will need a car. Cesar can arrange this for drop off the next morning which was great. (8 passenger van worked great for our group – week rental with taxes and filled with gas ~$700). The villa is at the top of a steep ridge. This makes for an amazing view, excellent workout, and tests the skills of a manual transmission driver of an 8 passenger van!

We really enjoyed the beach and the pool area by the beach. We ate many meals at Picante. They were extremely accommodating. Loved their frozen mojito, also try the traditional Casada. We had the place to ourselves many times as we arrived right at the end of the busy season. Their prices were reasonable and the food was great. We had Cesar arrange a fishing trip for our group. They picked us up and dropped us back at the beach. Although we didn’t catch a Rooster fish as my son hoped we caught enough red snapper for our whole group to have dinner. Picante prepared it for us traditionally and made salad, rice and plantains – all so delicious.

Back to the beach. The beach is a black sand beach. Some people didn’t like this. We found no issue with the black sand. It was not any hotter and there were places to rinse by the pool. There is good snorkeling on both sides of the cove. It was really fun to hike at the beach. Go to the right and you can hike all the way to Father Roosters as long as the tide was not high. Fun adventure! Pura Vida!

According to The Lonely Planet, Playa Ocotal has “the cleanest and quietest beach in all the area, offering good swimming and snorkeling” and breathtaking views of the Gulf of Papagayo, with the lush Santa Rosa National park across the way, from our private ebony-sand beach, hidden in a cove surrounded by cliffs. The perfect dreamy getaway for those seeking peace, relaxation and romance. This recent review might be helpful

Spectacular Villa !! Breathtaking views of ocean, mountains, and star lit skies..... great restaurant on site with wonderful staff- went deep sea fishing - brought back the local catch and the chef prepared a meal to die for!!
