Enjoy the open concept living and dining area on the main level, with pine beamed cathedral ceiling, hanging fireplace and slate floors. Cook simple fare to gourmet in the fully equipped maple granite kitchen with energy efficient appliances. In the warmer months, dine outside on the spacious deck with natural gas BBQ.
Relax in the upper floor master bedroom overlooking the lake and enjoy breathtaking sunrises from the walkout balcony. The master features a cathedral ceiling, queen pine sleigh bed, with eco-friendly soya mattress. There are two other bedrooms on the upper level both with cathedral ceilings - one with bunk beds, and another with a single/double bunk.
A convenient main floor bedroom, with 2 piece ensuite, has a queen bed.
Enjoy movies and satellite tv on a 40 inch flat screen in the lower level recreation/entertainment area. DVD, VCR, foosball table and board games are provided.
Listen for the eerie call of the loons through the morning mist. Beach comb for fossils on the private beach and rock groins. Stroll at dusk westward from the Christie Beach Conservation Authority on the long sandy beach, with the brilliant summer sun slowing dipping behind the hills of Cape Rich, then return to roast marshmallows over glowing ambers in the cottage's beach fire pit. Count the stars in the Big Dipper, and experience the August meteor showers, and on occasion, the dancing Northern LIghts.
Little ones will especially enjoy their very own Adirondack chairs and table. Take them on special excursions to the playground and sandy beach at the nearby Christie Beach Conservation Authority and scamper up the creek bed with its very interesting geological formations.
For skiers and bikers, store your equipment in our shed specifically designed for ski and bike lock-off.
High speed internet is available.
SPECIAL NOTE: We are a senior friendly facility, with an entrance ramp, main floor bedroom, and main floor bathrooms with safety devices. The lake front deck has been constructed at the same elevation (same level) as the main floor. Child safety gates protect the staircase accesses. The beach has been graded with a gentle slope allowing easy access to the waterfront.

We (Sue and Richard) hail from Southwestern Ontario and Trinidad respectively, and currently make Toronto our home. The family is an eclectic group of avid skiers/snowboarders, swimmers, scuba divers, hikers, sailors, musicians, food and wine lovers!
Owner purchased this Cottage in 1982
Why Owner chose The Blue Mountains
Sue vacationed in the area during early childhood and loved the majesty of the Bay and the friendly atmosphere of the local villages and towns. There was always so much to do - from skiing to sailing, or visiting the Tom Thompson Gallery in Owen Sound, the Apple Festival in Meaford or the Elvis Festival in Collingwood. Here the children learned to downhill ski and had their first taste of live theatre. Our favorite outings – to cross-country ski or hike the Kolapore Uplands through the towering hardwoods and protective cedars.
What makes this Cottage unique
At the Loons you can enjoy a true four season experience – bike through the white apple blossoms of spring along the Georgian Trail, soak up the summer sun on the cottage’s private beach or windsurf at nearby Craigleith, cast your rod for trout and salmon in the nearby Beaver or Big Head Rivers, absorb the colours of autumn while hiking and biking the Kolapore/Bruce Trails, experience the fun of downhill skiing at the nearby resorts and cross country skiing on the numerous trail systems. The cottage is advantageously situated to enjoy many local ski resorts - Blue Mountain, Georgian Peaks, Alpine, Craigleith, Talisman and Beaver Valley. Nearby Thornbury, Meaford and Collingwood offer full services and lots of things (and in fact, too many things!!) to do – golfing at several major championship courses (Lora Bay Raven Golf Course, the Georgian Bay Club, and Monterra), antiquing, river and lake fishing, Collingwood’s “Elvis” Festival, Meaford’s Georgian Bay theatre at the historic Opera House, international film festival and Apple Harvest Festival, wine tours at Coffin Ridge Winery, trapeze rides and the Scenic Caves at Blue Mountain, canoeing with Free Spirit Tours on the Beaver River, and the list goes on..... And of course, good dining and shopping. Georgian Bay is delightful for swimming, with wonderfully clean water. The cottage has a stony beach, great for fossil hunting. What better place to view the brilliant sunrises and sunsets. End the day toasting marshmallows over a beach camp fire, while listening for the loons. Nearby (10 cottages away) is the Christie Beach Conservation Authority with a very shallow sandy beach and playground, perfect for an afternoon outing with the little ones. Our location is easily accessible by a major highway (Hwys 400 and 26) or along numerous back road routes (Airport Road, Hwys 10, 27 and 50) if you want to avoid the weekend or holiday traffic. (Note: Canoe not available)

The Loons – great cottage to explore the area!
We enjoyed a great week at The Loons in October. The cottage has all the comforts and equipment for a relaxing stay where you can take in sunrises, sunsets and watch starry skies from the deck and waterfront. The location provides easy access to the Bruce and Georgian trail for hiking, running and cycling, Christie and Lora Beach and visiting the neighbouring towns of Thornbury, Meaford, Collingwood and Owen Sound for shopping, activities and meals. An easy scenic drive takes you to the waterfalls of Eugenia, Walters and Inglis and an side trip to Old Baldy for vista views over the Beaver Valley or Epping Lookout overlooking the Georgian Bluffs and Bay. When back at the cottage after an day of activities there is plenty of space indoors or out to sit and chat, play a game or read as well as space to get away for yourself just to relax. Owners Sue and Richard and their property manager John are very responsive if needed and ensure that the cottage is welcoming and well stocked with the necessary basics including coffee, oils and basic spices.
The Loons is a perfect cottage get away. The cottage is clean, well equipped & comfortable. The water is beautiful and theer are lots of spits for long walks & excellent trails for biking. We loved it!
Thank you so much for your kind review. We are so pleased you returned again this year (three years in a row!) and had a good time. Hope to see you next year!
I had a wonderful, fun-filled week with my family...the cottage was perfect in so many ways - every last detail was thought of! We spent many happy hours on the back patio overlooking the water. The Loons is an easy drive to everything - dining, shopping, Scandinave Spa (!) and, most of all, the Bruce Trail which was my main objective for choosing this area. I was able to complete the Beaver Valley section of the trail and would love to rent 'The Loons' in the future to complete the Blue Mountain section!
Thanks Kathy. Loved having you and your family at the Loons. Hope to see you back soon to continue your trek along the Bruce Trail. Cheers! Sue
Clean, cozy, well equipped...will not disappoint
Two weeks was not long enough for us...hated to leave. Comfortably accommodated 4 adults and two granddaughters....all in our own rooms. The cottage is situated between Thornbury and Meaford both offering close access to grocery stores, produce markets...pretty much any amenity you would need.
The main floor bedroom is great for grandparents and those with mobility issues.
You can expect a friendly, warm response from the owner, Sue. The property managers John and Diana equally so.
We are looking forward to our vacation at The Loons again this coming summer...August 2017.
The Loons is hard to leave!
This was my families 2nd time at The Loons and once again it did NOT disappoint. We LOVED our time in this cottage! It has so much to offer - from the excellent 'steps from the water' location to the fantastically cozy interior that is very well equipped and comfortable. It's the perfect vacation location for some rest and relaxation, a family get together or just about any other reason you could think of!!
Takes "cottage vacation" to another level...
We spent two wonderful weeks at The Loons in July 2016. The "cottage" is really lovely inside - lots of room and nicely decorated. Everything you need is provided, including firewood, lounge chairs, natural gas BBQ, washer & dryer, wifi, TV...and central A/C! This was most appreciated during some very hot, humid evenings. Sue and her property manager John are very attentive to any request, and a pleasure to deal with. The waterfront is great for mid-day dips in Georgian Bay, evening campfires, and sunrise/sunset-watching. We and our guests had a perfect vacation at The Loons, and look forward to returning soon.
Nearby Free Spirit Tours in Thornbury offers kayaking and canoeing on the beautiful Beaver River; Enjoy geocaching along the Niagara Escarpment Bruce Trail.
