Overview

About the property

3 Bedrooms, 4.5 Bathrooms, Comfortably Sleeps 8

Located in the exclusive Kohala Ranch community on the beautiful North Kohala coast on the big island of Hawaii, Hale Maka Kohola is truly a breathtaking and magical place. Hawaiian for "Home to Eye Whales", the home features rich accents of traditional Hawaiian Koa wood and a sweeping panorama of the Pacific Ocean from the huge lanai which wraps around the entire ocean-facing side of this traditional "plantation style" house.

Originally the model home for the gated Kohala Ranch development, Hale Maka Kohola is located on a prime five-acre lot at the lowest elevation nearest the ocean.

Enjoy absolute privacy and unobstructed views of the Hawaiian sunset and migrating humpback whales to the west, Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea volcanoes to the south, and the Kohala mountains to the northeast.

Just down the coastal Akoni Pule Highway is the historic town of Kawaihae where King Kamehameha made his home and united the Hawaiian islands. Stop by the Hale l'a Da Fish House for the fresh catch or try the shrimp po' boy sandwich at the Seafood Bar & Grill on your way through town. If you're in the mood for a bike ride, cycling along the Akoni Pule and other coastal highways is some of the best in the world.

From Kawaihae, you can head out for some of the best sport fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving in the world or take a scenic drive up the winding A Mamalahoa Highway to the lush and beautiful town of Waimea to visit the weekly farmers market. Want to spend time at the beach or hit the links? The world-renowned Mauna Kea and Hapuna Beaches and Golf Courses are just minutes from the house and offer some of the best surfing and golf in the world.

Drive north from the house and visit the sleepy town of Hawi and the spectacular Pololu Valley beyond. If you're feeling adventurous, take the path from the lookout to the valley floor and explore the secluded black sand beaches and clear Pololu stream as it winds through the lush valley scenery.

In the mood for some great food? Fine dining options like Manta or Brown's Beach House are always a favorite. Looking for something more casual? Kohala Burger & Taco, Lava Lava Beach Club and Hau Tree are great places to kick back with friends and family for lunch or drinks on the beach.

No matter how you choose to spend your time at Hale Maka Kohola, we know that you will have the time of your life enjoying all that the beautiful North Kohala Coast has to offer. Here is what some of our other guests had to say about their stay:

The house surpassed our expectations-we thoroughly enjoyed the view, the amenities and the island...See you again soon.

Words can hardly express how wonderful our time has been in your magnificent home. We watched beautiful sunsets and numerous whales in this wonderful secluded paradise. It's hard to leave such a wonderful place and we certainly hope we have the opportunity to return and enjoy this spacious home and beautiful amenities, We enjoyed our drive over to the local town for shopping and the use of the library. We can see why you enjoy such a great place. The kids loved the pool as well. Thank you for letting us share your home.

We've been coming to the Big Island for the last few years--We wish we had found your beautiful home sooner!

Jess, Shari, Jamie & Amy S. 5/01

When we talked about staying here, you mentioned that, although there are many beautiful places to visit on the Island, many never choose to leave this home--We were one of those--The daily routine was a trip to the 7/11 at the harbor for the newspaper and back home--Then pooltime--Honeymoons don't get any better than this!

Renee Mcl. 8/01

Great Home! We had a truly memorable time. Each moment was a blessing filled with beauty.

Kim & Nicole 9/01

We've had a wonderful time here. The house was perfect for the 5 of us. We love the setting, landscaping, layout, great mattresses, and how well it's stocked. Thanks for making us so comfortable. It's been 10 days we'll never forget--a wonderful family vacation and celebration of engagement. Thanks for everything. We hope to come back.

Will & Renee G. / Josh Andrew & Amanda M. 12/01

We thoroughly enjoyed this great home. The view is fantastic and the whales did the entertaining. You're right--it's much better than staying at a resort. We'll do it again.

Jim K. & Family 3/02

Your home is more beautiful than you described. Our wedding was perfect. This place will always hold a special place in our hearts. We'll be back to celebrate our anniversaries.

Pam & Marty 6/02

Thank you for the wonderful time we had in your home. The view is spectacular!! We spent the majority of our vacation relaxing @ the house and at the pool. The house is beautiful and the Piano is a wonderful bonus. We had a much needed break from our daily routine and look forward to visiting again.

Amazing time for our 40th

  • 5 of 5

Had a amazing time at Cassapacifica. This is our 4th time to enjoy this home overlooking the Pacific. Views and sunsets are breathtaking, the local Restaurants are great our favorite the Seafood Bar, great happy hour and great food. Fresh fish can be purchased at the local fish market and grilled back at the house. Great time, will be back soon. Thanks Bruce.

Perfect Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Thank you, Bruce, for sharing this fantastic property and allowing us to enjoy what my wife called "the best month of my life".

Our family gathered from Arizona, New Hampshire and Poland for a rare opportunity to for all of us to get together, and what a place this was to make that happen! This was the first trip to Hawaii for our son and daughter and their families, and your home was perfect for all of us. Spending time here may have set the bar kind of high for any future vacations they may plan to Hawaii, but that was what we hoped to do, and this vacation far exceeded our expectations.

The home itself was terrific, with plenty of space for all of us to gather (or to hide from each other for quiet time). The kitchen was equipped with pretty much everything we needed, including spices for the incredible fish we got from "Da Fish House" just down the road. And the pool...well, our four granddaughters loved it; they were in it more than they were out of it (OK, the rest of us were, too).

As the description indicates, you do need a car because it's a little bit away from the resort areas and shopping, but where on the Big Island do you not need a car? And being away from the hustle and bustle of the resorts added to the charm of the place and is exactly what we were looking for. It was hardly inconvenient, as most of the shopping and attractions (on the Kona side) are within a 15 minute to a half-hour drive.

Karen, your property manager, was fantastic and was always responsive and truly concerned that we had everything we needed. She is a gem. Don't lose her!

I have to agree with a previous review I read that the back bedrooms are very warm in the summer season, which might have been my only negative comment had you not provided the portable AC units. But the AC units worked well, and they made those rooms quite comfortable for sleeping. In fact, I'd say they were lifesavers, as the temperatures this past July were record breaking. Thank you for responding so well to your previous guests' comments!

I've already gone an and on, and could go on so much longer, but let me simply thank you again for allowing us to share this idyllic piece of paradise!

We look forward to another visit sometime soon (maybe when the whales are around).

Fabulous place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Bruce for letting me stay in your beautiful home.

This home is wonderfully situated from the scenery to the location. The home has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would possibly need for cooking. If you are not in the mood for cooking there are great restaurants nearby. Try to catch the Huli chicken man. The chicken he cooks is mouth watering. The store in Waimea is only a few miles away. You will be able to pick up everything you need there or you can stop at the store in Kona before you head to the house.

I loved the décor of the house. It is very comfortable and peaceful. I spent a lot of time admiring the art in the house. My favorite feature was the shower in the master bath. Wow! Would have been great to share that with someone, lol.

There are grounds on the property are wonderful. I spent a lot of time in the pool. It is fabulous at night will all the stars overhead. Watching all the birds and geckos is very entertaining. The wild turkeys come to the pool every afternoon to get a drink.

Spent a lot of time driving around admiring the scenery. I was able to drive to the Waipio Valley lookout. This is a must see. I tried to drive north to see the Pololu valley but got lost somewhere along the way. Even that was fun. Seeing the natural beauty of Hawaii is very good for the soul.

If you stop by the guard house at the gate, they are very helpful with directions and places to go. I obviously didn't ask for their help in getting to the Pololu valley or where to find a sandy beach. I will next time. I will definitely be back next year.

Perfect setting

The view was amazing!!!

We had lots of room for the 4 of us, two adults and two teenagers, and with the pool right there and perfect sandy beaches nearby it was the perfect vacation spot.

Thanks for sharing.

Family Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house was as lovely as described and as it appears in the photos. The grounds were in need of water and upkeep - although neatly maintained. The owner was delightful to talk with and the onsite maintenance person was fabulous! Our only discomfort was that the guest bedrooms are extremely hot for sleeping in July. I would not recommend staying that month, unless air-conditioners are installed in those rooms. However - we would return happily to this lovely, peaceful home.

A slice of home and heaven on the Big Island

  • 5 of 5

So you are planning a visit to the Big Island, and you want a little place to call home while you are there? Maybe it is time to look no further. A wonderful setting, beautiful views, slightly remote so you are not near all the tourist kind of stuff, and everything you would want to have a wonderful vacation! This is a beautiful house overlooking the Pacific Ocean. A great pool and everything you would need to relax and just chill out.

We went with our family of three children, ages 22,19, and 16 and it was great for all of them as there was plenty of room to get together (and watch the olympics!0 or just getaway to a bedroom and have a little quiet, alone time! This is a highly recommended location and I hope we can get back sooner rather than later!
