Artist Cottage Across from Marsh, Downtown St. Marys, Upstairs Apartment

Bedrooms 1
Space 960 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-4)

This roomy (960 sq. ft.) one-bedroom upstairs apartment is fully appointed with high speed wireless Internet, and basic cable. We vaulted the ceilings, and added stained glass and sky lights to make this a bright, cheerful escape. Enter off a private deck into a wide tiled hallway with a desk and bookshelves. To the right of the kitchen, over the bar, is the living room and the Alice-in- Wonderland sitting room. Just past the kitchen sink is a laundry dryer stack and kitchen pantry. To the left is the bath area and bedroom.

There is an extensive book and DVD collection for you to enjoy along with area maps and brochures of area attractions and upcoming events along with menus collected from some of our favorite restaurants.

The generous deck (13’ x14’) is a great place to entertain al fresco. Spacious patio with table and chairs, complete with an umbrella and cushions allow outside dining. A gate at the top of the stairs keeps your dog safe beside you. We are dog friendly to well-behaved members of your family.

On a nice day, use our beach cruisers to pedal around our friendly town and enjoy our waterfront areas.

About Elizabeth Gray

I am Elizabeth Gray, a native St. Marys resident. Since childhood, I have always loved the Norris St. home. I grew up on the other corner of the block. My family and friends are here and so has been my career. When I finished school, I started my own business, Gray’s Gallery and Custom Frame Shop. It’s been a place where I have framed lots of artwork for other people, and a place where I’ve displayed and sold my own work. Designing spaces, construction projects and furnishing and decorating are some of my favorite things. My best “therapy” is gardening. There’s something terrific about digging in the dirt. In short, Norris St. has provided me with a huge palette to be creative on all those levels. My hope is that you will truly enjoy what was designed for you.

Elizabeth Gray purchased this house in 2002

Why Elizabeth Gray chose Georgia

There are three huge magnolia trees, yet the property is sunny and breezy. I love to look across North River to Fernandina and see boat traffic. I like the different living levels: patio, downstairs decks, and railed upper deck. We’ve had some terrific parties on the downstairs patio: cookouts, fire pit evenings, and dancing. It’s fun to meet new people and socialize with old friends as well. Come join us!

Whether you are vacationing, looking for property, or working, our hope is that this “artist cottage” becomes an “island of pleasure. Basic start up supplies are provided to ease your transition. When we say, “Just bring your clothes!” we are pretty sure that everything else you need is already here.

Lots of us walk in the morning. There’s a great 3.5 to 5 mile loop that takes you downtown to the river where you get the gentle kiss of a breeze in the morning. Sometimes, you even get the present of a dolphin swimming beside you. There is a group of waterfront feral cats that volunteers have adopted and feed daily. Many times they mistake a walker for a meal provider and bound out of their safe places with a hopeful meow.

There’s always something going on downtown: the big swoosh of the Coast Guard loading up bright and early on their vessels, boaters headed out to land the big one, or couples headed over to catch the Cumberland ferry. You might wander through as vows are being exchanged in the park, or catch it just right as an arts and crafts festival concludes with a live band and street dance. This is a friendly southern coastal town.

We are fortunate to live in such a peaceful, beautiful spot. We know that once you have tasted St. Marys-by-the-sea, you will acquire a taste for the town and its people. St. Marys will always have a place in your heart.

What makes this house unique

There’s a Chinese tallow tree laden with wind chimes, birdfeeders, and birds. We get cardinals, mockingbirds, house finches, Carolina wrens, blue jays, red-bellied woodpeckers, mourning doves, goldfinches, painted buntings, great crested flycatchers, ring-necked turtle doves, hummingbirds, downy woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, robins, warblers, brown thrashers, cedar waxwings, bluebirds, and the occasional hawk, owl, and bat. If you get up early enough, you’ll hear this slight whirring overhead, and you’ll notice ibises and egrets headed to the river for a day of flying and fishing. It’s quite a symphony of bird sounds and songs throughout the day.

When you are upstairs, you have a bird's eye view of everything going on around you. We loaded the walls, ceilings, and floors with insulation so it's extremely quiet and private up there. Because the ceilings are vaulted, you walk in and immediately take a deep breath because it doesn't feel cluttered or crowded. We made the upstairs deck as large as we could and that contributes to the feeling of spaciousness as well. Because our weather is generally so mild, it's easy to just leave the front door open, raise a few windows and enjoy a wonderful cross draft. It's a very pleasant space.

You are but a five minute walk from the downtown waterfront park on the St. Marys river and ferry to Cumberland Island, shopping and restaurants, and another five minute walk in the other direction to the Meeting St. boat ramp where you can view North River.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Comments: The Norris St. apartment is absolutely fabulous. I second the previous reviewers' comments about how well stocked it is. We did not have to buy any spices, detergent, soap, etc. Among the thoughtful items provided were: bug spray, a sewing kit, all sizes of ziploc bags, a bird guide and binoculars, tape and a stapler, maps of area attractions and cities, post-it notes...the list goes on and on. Our two children (aged 5 and 7) slept comfortably on the sofa-bed and enjoyed the space as much as we did. Lastly, I must add that the owner, Elizabeth, is a most kind and thoughtful host. She went out of her way to make sure that we had a delightful time. Don't miss visiting her shop, Gray's Gallery. She is a truly impressive artist. Thanks, Elizabeth! We can't wait to come back to Norris St. again.

First visit to St Mary's & Cumberland Island

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is a pleasant respite for travelers to the area. It is impeccably clean and well maintained. Location is great as you can walk to the downtown area of St. Mary's. Elizabeth provided "free bikes" and we enjoyed riding through the neighborhoods. It was also very quiet as it is located in a residential area. The welcome packet provided great ideas and suggestions for restaurants, things to do, etc. Elizabeth does everything to make her guests feel at home from a bottle of wine to reading materials/DVDs and a bountiful selection of snacks! We will definitely be back and hope to stay here again. thank you.

Visiting St. Marys and Barrier Islands

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is a warm and comfortable home away from home. From the welcoming notes and bottle of wine from the owner, to all the extra amenities, it is by far one of the most delightful VRBO places we have stayed. We loved the close proximity to the waterfront and historic buildings and shops, the central location for travel to Amelia and Cumberland Islands, and biking, kayaking, and hiking. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a quiet and friendly place to stay and tour this interesting area.

We visited St. Mary's to celebrate a birthday over a long weekend and stayed in the upstairs apartment. The apartment is impeccably clean and is stocked with everything you need to get started including snacks, water, soft drinks and even a welcoming bottle of wine! The bed and sheets will not disappoint and are extremely comfortable. Other reviewers mentioned that Elizabeth has thought of everything and we agree completely! From toiletries to beach towels, the only thing you can't forget are your clothes! The outside deck is a great place to spend the evening. The neighborhood and St. Mary's really offer a fantastic small town feel and while the restaurants are not fancy - we were treated like regulars from the moment we stepped foot in Seagle's and really enjoyed a dinner at Lang's as well. The apartment is just a few blocks from the historic waterfront and Cumberland Island ferry and we walked everywhere we needed to go. It was also an easy drive to head a little up the road to check out Jekkyl Island as well. It was an extremely relaxing weekend and Elizabeth offers the perfect place to make the most of your stay. Highly recommend it!

You won't find better!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and 13 yr old and I decided at the last minute to head up to St. Mary's for a few days. Because we prefer not to stay in hotels, if it can be helped, I checked VRBO and came across this cute apartment. Let me just say...if you are thinking of ever renting out your home....this is where you go to take notes! Elizabeth has thought of everything! She was quick to respond to my inquiry, provided detailed directions and info on the local eateries. The apartment is small, but plenty large enough for us 3, so clean, and well lit, and decorated adorably. We loved every minute there and wish we could have stayed longer.Elizabeth has provided a huge book in the apartment full of local info and attractions. Truly she has thought of everything...snacks, wine, water in the fridge. It was a great place to stay while we visited Cumberland Island and Jekyll Island. We ate in town each night, and it was all good. Don't expect anything fancy...the ambience of the restaurants are lacking....however you will eat good! Langs Seafood was a great shrimp meal. Riverview Cafe has a great seafood platter and the last night we ate at Seagles. Fabulous steak! What a great vaca we Mary's is a gem of a small town. Beautiful trees with the moss hanging on every street lined with beautiful old homes. Hope to go back one day. Our favorite thing about the apartment was sitting out on the deck listening to the wind chimes in the trees. Just magical. You cannot go wrong with this rental!

We stayed five nights in Elizabeth's Artist's Cottage and were bowled over by the attention to detail. Every possible item was provided for the comfort of the guests, from the welcome bottle of wine, water and soft drinks and numerous snacks. The bathroom also was amazingly stocked. It's true, you could just take your clothes! The rooms are warm and welcoming, perfect for relaxing. St Marys is a charming village, convenient for restaurants and interesting trips further afield. We borrowed the bikes and cycled to The Crooked River, a very enjoyable ride, fortunately all flat! We cannot recommend this cottage too highly.

The Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The Spring of 2016 was our fourth stay with Elizabeth, but our first in the cottage. The cottage is beautifully appointed, comfortable, and an easy walk to downtown and the waterfront. Ms Gray is a gracious host, cognizant of her guests' needs, and eager to point out points of interest in the surrounding area. In addition to being the ideal landlady, Elizabeth is an accomplished artist and many of her paintings adorn the walls of her properties. We love staying in St. Mary's, and plan on visiting again in the future.
