Here is one of our reviews from our happy guest!

We had a wonderful and truly relaxing "staycation" in Ohia Estates. The house is comfortable and clean, and it has everything you need including a fully stocked kitchen. The shower.....I cannot say enough about this shower!!! It felt like I was bathing in a perfectly hot incredible. The hot tub with the view of ohia trees and hapu'u ferns was absolutely lovely. I definitely recommend this sweet little home.

Why Merlenna Higby chose Ohia Estates

After living in L.A. and traveling the world for the past 10 years, I have been searching for my piece of Hawaii. I am originally from Honolulu and I didn't want to be in a city environment, so I chose the Big Island to call home. I was drawn to Volcano because of it's cooler temperature and it's proximity to Hawaii National Park. It's exciting living so close to one of the most active volcano's in the world. The earth is ALIVE here!

What makes this house unique

Spend the day exploring Volcano's Hawaii National Park, hiking the trails of Kilauea or playing golf at the Volcano Golf and Country Club then come home to a completely furnished home with a fully equipped kitchen. You and your special someone can prepare a gourmet meal then soak in the hot tub while sipping wine on the outdoor lanai. All the creature comforts of home in the serene tropical rain forest. Amenities include wireless internet, DirecTV Satellite Programming, and DVD/CD Surround Sound Stereo System.

Cozy Home in the Rainforest

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this home for a week in August. It was a great base for exploring Kilauea, Chain of Craters Road, Pahoa, Hilo and beyond. Loved the location, close to Volcano center with gas station and restaurants, but isolated enough to be very quiet. We took a boat trip to the active lava flow entering the ocean - highlight of our 3 week trip. It was nice to have a cooler and ice packs for our outings.

A nice rainforest retreat

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here just one night but I quite enjoyed it and can recommend to future visitors.

It's in the town of Volcano, basically a small town in a rainforest. It's a very private house in a picturesque location. The streets and property are surrounded by trees and plants. It rained on and off much of the time I was here which I think was typical (~100 inches of rain per year in this area). The town is very small, and I had already bought food on the Kona side, over here you might want to end up driving to Hilo for shopping if you're have more than a brief stay here. It's about a 5 minute drive from the entrance of the Volcanoes national park, and just a minute or two off of the highway.

The house itself is quite nice. It has a very large and well equipped kitchen and living room and you could really be comfortable here for a more extended stay of several nights. Sitting in the hot tub with the back patio surrounded by trees and plants after a day of hiking in the Volcanoes park is quite nice. Cell reception was a bit spotty for me with T-mobile, I couldn't even always get a roaming signal inside. But the internet worked fine while I was there and there is DirectTv, an extensive DVD collection, and some board games if you want some indoor entertainment.

The housekeeper was very helpful and friendly. I accidentally called her when I meant to call the Kilauea visitors center (I had written the numbers down next to each other in my travel notebook) but she still helpfully and knowledgeably answered my questions and it took a few minutes for me to realize I had dialed the wrong number she was so helpful!

Some small criticisms: There are lots of lights on dimmer switches, and fans with speed switches, which was helpful but also takes some time to figure out since they were not labeled. Several of the kitchen knives were in very bad shape and could be sharpened or replaced (or maybe include a sharpener). The kitchen also because it was very large was a little bit harder to find things. Some labels would be helpful, even if it would maybe not look as nice.

Close to the Park

  • 3 of 5

House was nicely furnished and very close to the park. The previously reported cats were seen in great numbers. But they do not bother you and run whenever you try to approach. If you plan to grill the utensils are all there. However be prepared to bring your own spices. Salt and onion salt were the only spices in the cabinet. We purchased a pepper shaker and left for the next guest. Coffee, tea and cocoa were available. Shower was nice but complicated if you wanted to use the fancy settings. There is no exhaust fan so opening the window is recommended otherwise it gets too steamy. The loaner cooler was excellent, took it all over the island. Wifi was great, but cell service is spotty on site.
