About Mary Fox

Aloha, I am Mary Fox, R (B) and owner of 2 Papayas, LLC. I manage this wonderful Puako home on behalf of the Owners. I would love to help you and your family find the perfect home for your stay on the Big Island. I am a nearby resident, myself, so I am available to greet you upon arrival, answer any questions you may have, or attend to any concerns or requests that may arise during your stay. Until we meet in Paradise....

Mary Fox purchased this house in 2017

Why Mary Fox chose Puako

What is not to love about a cute ocean front cottage in Puako? This home has two bedrooms with AC (which can be very nice to have!). There are lots of comfortable sitting areas and even an outside day bed where you can fall asleep listening to the ocean.

What makes this house unique

The expansive yard leads you to prime snorkeling though paths mixed between lava rocks, coral and sand. Puako has some of the best snorkeling on island. Often you will see Honu (green sea turles) or even a whale from shore if you are here in the Winter months.

Guestbook comments from the manager

This was the best supplied kitchen in terms of equipment we've ever had in a vacation rental. We loved, loved sitting out by the water. Enjoyed having lots of great living space and a useable kitchen, too. It was also very clean

We loved our stay in the cottage by the sea!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage had a very well equipped kitchen, including spices and really nice cookware. We cooked our Thanksgiving dinner there. Everything needed for snorkeling was provided, including packable beach chairs and beach towels. We have stayed in Puako many times and have used 2 Papayas in the past. 2 Papayas always has the best service and very friendly and helpful staff. We would highly recommend.

Spacious beach cottage - just bring food

  • 5 of 5

Stayed her 2-weeks and spent lots of time on the property since it was so pleasant and comfortable. Reluctantly recommend this place as it may become too popular.

Puako beach cottage perfectly located on the Island- protected by coral reefs and old lava flow pools. Walk, snorkel, bike or kayak to fabulous beaches steps away or to Hapuna/Waialea/Mauna-Lani beaches; shopping in walking distance.

Blue Dragon cottage has large lanai, outdoor shower, kitchen with gas stove and great cooking equipment.

Protected turtles onshore, migrating schools of fish in the shallows, clear water snorkeling, great books on the shelf, direct view to the Great Kamehameha Heiau.

2papayas reservation simple, clear and transparent; professional with kamaaina warmth, and simply great. Entire vacation was great.

Relaxing Stay

  • 5 of 5

Blue Dragon was in great shape, clean, nicely outfitted and very comfortable for four adults and one child. 2Papayas was nice to work with, always responding quickly and letting us check in a little early & check out a little late. Very much enjoyed the lanai, the loungers closer to the water, the outdoor shower, and of course the tide pools. There were plenty of beach towels and chairs (might be time to replace the chairs, though), plus boogie boards and snorkel equipment. AC in bedrooms was welcome and worked perfectly. Highly recommend Blue Dragon restaurant, Kohala Sail & Sea (departs out of Kawaihae harbor), and the Mauna Kea Moonlight Manta snorkel trip (max. 6 people, an amazing experience). Puako is the best!

Hawaiian Heaven

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd time staying at Blue Dragon. With its laid back charm and private surroundings, it is every bit the Hawaiian getaway. The Big Island has so much to see and do, but this little bungalow draws you in - with so many places inside and out to curl up with a book and/or watch the ocean - or play in it . . its a wonderful place for weary souls to relax and unwind.. . .and the outdoor shower is the best! Also - kudos to 2 Papayas - what an excellent management team! Efficient, attentive but unobtrusive. Thank you for always making our stay so very special!

Great Experience!

  • 5 of 5

Four of us stayed at the Blue Dragon and had a fabulous time. My daughter and son-in-law spent hours at the tide pools watching and filming the turtles and eels. We all enjoyed the wide open spaces in the house and on the lanai. It was such a comfortable house. I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Two weeks of bliss at Puako

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently returned from two weeks at the Blue Dragon Bungalow, and we loved it! The home is well equipped and generously supplied, and 2papayas is a wonderful rental/management company. I loved starting my morning with coffee overlooking the water, and each day we spent time exploring the tidepools, replete with turtles and other ocean life. The snorkeling is fabulous, with clear water and so many fish! We thoroughly enjoyed the nature surrounding us, from the gekkos on the lanai to the trees, flowers, and the lovely sound of birdsong. We also enjoyed the unique vibe of Puako, with its neighborhood feel and General Store (I recommend their fresh and delicious ono poke bowl). We did get out to Hawi, Waimea, and scuba diving with the mantas, but it was always great to get back to "our" peaceful bungalow. After 20+ trips to the Hawaiian Islands, including about a dozen to the Big Island, this was our most authentic experience yet. We hope to be back someday soon!

Dating back to ancient times, Puako was a fishing village that, until the 1950s, was accessible only by boat or by the Ala Kaha Kai (the ancient “shoreline trail” that is now partially restored as a National Historic Trail). One of Hawaii’s largest petroglyph fields is nearby.Still a small beach community—fewer than 200 homes along a single road just 2 ½ miles long—Puako is blessed with a consistently sunny and gentle climate. An eclectic mix of residents, snowbirds and vacationers, the kids you see on bikes and the surfers at Paniau probably live here. As you cross paths with them, stop and “talk story” at the General Store, an informal community center as well as a convenient resource for supplies. Life in Puako—year-round and short-term—is relaxed, very relaxed, but never boring.

Rimmed by a protected marine preserve, the Puako reef offers endless sights for snorkeling, SCUBA diving, kayaking, swimming and tide pool wading. Join the “honu” (protected sea turtles—please enjoy them at a safe distance) for a swim or follow their lead and bask in the sun nearby. You’ll have a great vantage point for watching the wintertime display of whales and their young during their calving time in our warm waters.

If all this isn’t exciting enough, you can walk to the Mauna Lani or Fairmont Orchid Hotels for a sunset beverage, or visit the nearby Shops at Mauna Lani or the King’s Shops and Queen’s Marketplace just down the highway for shopping and a variety of restaurants and galleries. On the way upcountry to Waimea, home of Parker Ranch and the “paniolos” (cowboys), a stop at Kawaihae Harbor offers additional restaurants, galleries, and a fish market. Golfers have numerous options, and adventurers may head for the summit of Mauna Kea, the active volcano Kilauea or a trip to the Zipline in Kapa’au.
