About Martha Bryan Wight

I am a native of the region and once lived at this residence. My mother lived in this home until her mid 90's and she encouraged visitors walking by to sit with her on the front porch. The garden area in the backyard serves several families and carries on the tradition of vegetable gardening Helen's way. . She would be delighted to know that people stay in her home to celebrate birthdays, friendship, reunions, and even weddings. I carry on her Southern hospitality and attitude, hoping I make friends with each of my renters.

Martha Bryan Wight purchased this house in 2008

Why Martha Bryan Wight chose Black Mountain

Growing up in Black Mountain makes me a proud native. I inherited this property from my mother and want to keep the house alive until I am in a position to return to it full time.

What makes this house unique

The location is perfect. Walking to shop or dine is so easy because downtown is just one block away and the recreation center is just a stroll to the lake and tennis courts. You can feel the energy of living in-town by sitting on the front porch or just move to the deck and drink in the mountain views. An expansive living room makes the house feel spacious and the eat in kitchen allows for a cook to be with guest and create a dinner together. Newly refinished hardwood floors adds a newness and walls are freshly painted. Helen's offers in town activities with a view. A new fee is to be added to the rate to cover the expenses of VRBO> A 9% service fee will be added to the rental rate.

Great retreat for 7 ladies!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of ladies were in town for a knitting retreat and couldn't have been more pleased with the house and it's location. Martha was a pleasure to work with and we were even treated to a fresh head of cauliflower from the garden! We will definitely return!

Lovely step back in time!

We really enjoyed our weekend at Helen's place. The house is super functional - loved the front porch & back deck. Really funny but we loved the push button light switches.

Perfect refuge!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I were fleeing Hurricane Irma and headed to North Carolina to stay with my daughter. Unfortunately, due to a leak, our daughter's house flooded and she and her family had to evacuate their house as well. Miraculously, we were able to book Helen's Place and spend a wonderful five days together as a family. The house is exactly as pictured, and we loved the location. The view from the back deck is fantastic. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks, Martha, for being such a great host!

Owner's Response: Thank you for being so helpful and letting me come in with my freezer stock as I was also a casualty of Irma. I hope you do return and tell others about how wonderful our little town can be , even in bad times! You were great to have and have a wonderful fall season Martha

Location, Location, Location .....

  • 5 of 5

If you are headed to Black Mountain, or Asheville for that matter then do yourself a favor and see if this house is available. It is an older home but in a great neighborhood , well furnished and immaculately clean. You can't beat the location as you can walk into town. There is everything you need without having to drive, including Killwins Ice Cream Shop !!

The house has a great porch in front as well as out back. Be sure to watch the sun rise with the mountains in the background sitting on the back porch.

Martha (the host) was great as well , she checked with us prior to see if we had any questions or needed anything! I will definitely return with my family the next time that we visit the area!

Wonderful visit!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your home with us. Wonderful experience. Great location close to town. Moderate temperatures.! We enjoyed the front porch every morning, and the back deck every evening. Loved the round push button light switches (a reminder of home). Also enjoyed visiting with Mike and sampling his 'Tommy toes'. Hope to find time to return for another visit.

Owner's Response: Thank you. It was my pleasure to have you stay and I hope you will return.I am partial to the deck in the evening but also love to people watch from the front porch. Our temps have really cooled this week and I hope that Harvey ( hurricane) has not been a problem for you.

A simpler time?

  • 5 of 5

I hesitated on reviewing this house because it was a different experience for us. It's a very old house and a bit small (at least for a family of 6). Somehow rather than detracting from the pleasure of staying there, this added to the experience. Some of the things I loved: the fact that you can walk to dinner and ice cream downtown and it's a fun, joyful walk, the charming home and the acceptance of the fact that it is what it is (not new, not fancy but warm and homey), lightning bugs in the evening in the front yard!, a small cozy front porch that was perfect for our family dinner, the pair of gardening sneakers (presumably the owners) that were set on a beam of the porch that now house a bird's nest, the vegetable garden in the backyard that is tended to by the owner's childhood friend (the mayor of Black Rock) and the fact that when my youngest put too much paper in the toilet, the mayor brought over a plunger. In sum, I loved staying here. I'm smiling while I write this review just thinking about it!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your honest review. Although your visit started a little rocky I am glad that it ended as a positive experience. I can't believe you noticed the bird nest sneakers. A pair of doves moved in and I just have not evicted them! I think what you had was a "small town experience" . so come back and we will give you that homey feeling again. Again thanks for choosing to come to Black Mountain. Martha
