Your Vacation Rental is 1/2 mile up mountain side Hwy. Views of the Pacific and Kealakekua Bay. Snorkeling and beach 15 minuets, Place of Refuge . Grocery 10 minuets away.45 minuets from Kona airport. 1 master bedroom with King bed, one small bedroom twin bed, full bathroom upstairs with large tub shower and small downstairs bedroom with Queen size bed. Outside separate 1/2 bathroom with outside shower. Fully stocked kitchen for cooking. Guests love the quiet here and it's a great place for families with kids to play on the 10 acres. Plenty Avocados and fruit just ask the owner for a few.

About Lee maxwell

I am a Licened Hawaii General Contractor and always have a new home going on somewhere. I have 10.5 acres here on the farm. I have put an enourmas amount of work to rebuild and make it the way it is today. I also have another property the "Red House" down the dirt road a few hundred feet. That listing is 967205.

So I am always busy, everyday.

I harvest 1000 sacks of Mac Nuts each year from my trees. You pick them when they hit the ground which is all year crop. Pickers come 3 times a year. Philippine picker's 8 of them. Tiny people but the friendliest people you have every met. Each nut is hand picked off the ground stooping all day long. You try it !!

Also the coffee. Unfortunately the coffee business is struggling with a beetle that bores into the coffee cherry on the tree and ruins it. It has cost the industry millions off dollars in losses these past 5 years. I spray a fungicide that turn into a fungus and kills the beetle. But you have to walk the farm and 7000 trees and spray them every 2 weeks. Its a $400

job each time and it works but you cant do it every 2 weeks, useless you have very deeep pockets or do it yourself. My back will not allow me to do this anymore so I hire it out. I am cutting down ally the coffee trees as no all 7000 of them. They will grow back in 2 years and be bug free but I am only going top keep the coffee I can manage myself. So in 2019 we will have coffee again.

Nice rural property overlooking Kealakekua Bay

Our family of 4 really enjoyed a week-long stay at Max's farm in mid-March. Lovely rural setting up the side of Mauna Loa (so it is pleasantly cool at night - bring long pants and a fleece and you'll be fine). The access road is a bit rough (5 minutes from the highway), but 4x4 is not required. We arrived late and Max kindly met us at the Highway (at the Telephone Exchange Road - big white building at corner). Otherwise we would not have found the place (complicated by the Homeway map that shows his property to be on the other side of the highway!). If arriving late, I would recommend staying the night in Kona and arriving the next morning. Less stressful start to your vacation!

We chose this location (Captain Cook area) as a base to explore this side of the island. Got south to Punaluu Black Sand Beach, Green Sand Beach and South Point, as well as north to Hapuna Beach, the Kohala Coast, Hawi and the Pololu Valley. Or favourite spot though was snorkelling at Two-Step, just 10 minutes away, beside Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park (place of refuge). Our other favourite spot was watching sunset from our lanai (with an appropriate beverage and BBQ dinner) - or having morning coffee there watching the birds. Unfortunately some beetle infected his coffee plants but he still harvests macadamia nuts and there are avocado, papaya and other fruits trees around the property.

Max's place is not fancy, but he has all you need. He even got us some boogie boards and beach chairs to use during our stay. Max lives on the property, so is handy should you need anything. And our kids loved playing with his 3 dogs Rocket, Pitou and "P-three". We had a super time there! Thanks Max!

Fantastic stay

We stayed here for three weeks and couldn't have been happier. The rental was clean and had everything we needed. We love stilling out on the deck with our morning coffee and grilling dinner at night. Our days were filled with beach time and tide pool exploring.

The master bedroom was comfortable and myself and 4 year old son slept in that room, and we had a friend come stay with us for a week and she stayed in the adjoining single bedroom. There is also a private room downstairs with another queen bed and access to a private toilet, but we didn't need that much space. The kitchen was great and had all the basics. A full fridge, pots and pans, microwave and a few of the basics like cooking oil and salt (but bring what you need). We also brought our own drinking water. If you've ever stayed on the Island before, you'll know this is a common thing as most water is catchment and locals just fill their jugs at water machines that are readily available (.30 cents a gallon so it's cheap)

We look forward to our next stay here!

Good view but underfurnished

Max is a nice guy, the view is good, the beds are comfortable and the place is generally clean (although the oven was a disaster). It is relatively bug free for Hawaii (no roaches noted). It is rural (a plus in my book) but unfortunately not quiet during our stay, as there were one or more chain saws and Max's 4-wheeler in action much of the time we were there. It is close to great snorkeling and the Pu'uhonua o Honaunau, and reasonably accessible to grocery and other shopping opportunities and restaurants. It's a decent location to serve as a base of operations for island exploration.

Unfortunately, the place is under furnished--no comfortable chairs inside, and no place to unpack or hang clothes in 2 of the bedrooms, which was a definite problem for our 2 week stay. The kitchen has minimalist equipment if you hope to do most of your own cooking, but Max did have a reverse osmosis water filter installed early in our stay so the water was drinkable. The 3rd bedroom is off the carport and inaccessible to the (unfinished) laundry room toilet or upstairs living area except via outside stairs. The property is at about the 1700 foot level; we had some significantly cold nights for which the bedding available was inadequate and there is no source of heat other than the (inconsistent during our stay) sun. The tub/shower is difficult to access--it's a fairly deep jetted tub with about a foot wide front to be negotiated; hard for short folks or those with unhappy knees or hips. There were adequate towels, but only 2 washcloths in the place. The laundry equipment is suboptimally effective, coin operated, and apparently used by 2-3 other households (Max, his son, and another rental) as well as the tenants at this rental. The road is very rough and the driveway is worse. We (3 women over 60) will not be back.

Owner's Response: Mahalo for the review. You are right the house is under furnished. It also needs comfortable chairs to sit in inside and out. Can't do much about the bathtub. But the rest of it including the blind I will spend the next week fixing it up. Too busy it seems. For your review and your comments and the five stars.Please come back again the house will be refurnished and Max will give you wonderful ladies two weeks for $1000.00. That's $72.00 a nite for the 3 of you or $333.00 each of you for the 14 nites. I respect your review and am blessed you gave me 5 stars. We have repaired the road coming into the farm from turn off and the neighborhood has a scheduled Paving of telephone exchange Road. Aloha and Mahalo for coming peace on Earth Max

Roomy and rural

We had a nice time staying at Max's farm. Max is hospitable and generous and our daughters loved his dogs. We enjoyed walking around with him to find fruit to pick and enjoy during our stay. The papayas were delicious! We liked being away from the Kona crowds and appreciated the slightly higher elevation since it was cooler. The views of the night sky and the ocean and sunsets were beautiful. Like others have said, the driveway was something. We were grateful that our rental car was a Jeep. Don't choose this house if you have back problems.

The house was roomy, and the bathroom was small but very clean. The grout and sealant in the tile shower were in great shape. The house decor is minimal - no little breakables that you have to keep the kids away from. The blinds were the only thing that didn't function. They were hard to open and close and could use replacing.

Upstairs there are two bedrooms, one with a king and one with a twin. Also the full bath, kitchen, etc. are up there, and a nice lanai. Downstairs from a separate locking entry is another bedroom with the third bed. Since it is separate this wouldn't work well as a room for small children in case they need something during the night. The downstairs bedroom had a musty smell, but again everything was clean.

Overall this house was an excellent value for the price and beat out fitting our family into a little hotel room (and paying more to do so)! I gave it four starts based on the value. You get your money's worth out of this one.

Secluded with good view (May 2015)

Max's rental is conveniently located to many good beaches, restaurants and garden and coffee tours. Kailua-Kona is only about 40 minutes down the road, so if you get the urge to be around lots more people, more beaches, shopping and restaurants with music, it's not too far away. The volcano is close enough to stay for a few hours and still get back before the sun goes down. The house is adequate, it even comes with it's own geckos. You will need to buy drinking water, so stop by one of the stores on the way. Max will supply you with great coffee from his own farm. Max makes himself available if you need any help, otherwise he will leave you on your own. Great view of this part of the coast from the balcony.

Peaceful setting and a comfortable home

We enjoyed our week's stay at Max's house. The view of the bay, morning, noon and evening is amazing. The quiet with only the sounds of nature is calming. The home is clean, well-maintained and spacious. Our teens loved to have their own rooms and enjoyed playing with the dogs. We spent most of our days exploring the big island: walking down to the Waipio valley, stargazing at Mauna Kea, 11 mile hike to see lava gushing down into the ocean, snorkeling and hanging out on the beaches. It was always nice to come back to the house and the farm.

The fridge and TV (with so many channels, though we hardly watched) are new. Beds are comfortable. Hanging out on the lanai is what we did most mornings. Our kids were connected to their school online every single day as they had to submit work. Although it was slow 1-2 days, there was no issue.

Be careful of the drive from the main road to the plantation, as the road sign seems to have gone missing. Max was kind enough to come down the road to meet us the first time. He gave us a bag of Kona home-grown coffee, guavas, couple of avocados, and took us around the farm. Airport, supermarkets, beaches, cafes are all close by, albeit you need a car. Don't forget water shoes and snorkeling gear, hiking shoes and some winter clothes if you plan to go up Mauna Kea.

We miss it already!
