About John Reeves
I am married with two daughters. We all love the Island. My oldest daughter graduated from Auburn with a Masters degree and my youngest just graduated from Auburn as well. This is Rachael, Tommie and my wife Martha.
John Reeves purchased this House in 2009
Why John Reeves chose Dauphin Island
We have five vacation homes on Dauphin Island. This one has quickly become the favorite. Shallow water is great for kayaks and all other forms of water sports. The Gulf is across the street and the Bay is at your back door. The best of both worlds. Everyone loves the setting. Fish, flounder, crab, kayak, do whatever you want here...it's the perfect place! Wifi, Cable, Garbage pickup twice a week.
What makes this House unique
Both the Mississippi Sound and the Gulf of Mexico at your door.

In desperate need of maintenance
It’s fairly obvious after staying here that most of these reviews were written by people who either stayed here a long time ago or not at all. The first thing I noticed upon pulling up is that it needs painting-no big deal. Walked up the steps and noticed they were very shaky-again, didn’t bother me too much. I opened the door and that’s when it started to sink in. In the hallway, there was a hole the size of my fist in the wall near the door, the recessed lighting had no trim and was very rusty, and there is a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide detector right next to the blank plates still mounted to the wall from the old ones. All the furniture looks like it was pulled out of Goodwill. One chair was broken and another had a stain where someone’s dirty head had leaned back on it repeatedly. The two twin beds were falling apart to the point that I wouldn’t sit on it to read to my kids for fear it would fall in. The door to the MBR was broken and you had to hold a board on top of it in place to be able to close it. The attached bath had several quarter sized holes in the wall and missing light bulbs. I took my shoes off and walked across the carpet and immediately put them back on for the rest of my stay. Every vent in the house was rusted and filthy. Utensils had old food caked on them-we washed everything and still decided to limit our exposure by using paper plates, solo cups, and plastic forks. The cabinets in the kitchen are falling apart. Some drawers were stuck closed and others wouldn’t close at all. The ceiling on the back deck is falling in and filthy. The lights and speakers (both old and new- neither worked) were rusty. The outdoor shower was atrocious. I wouldn’t let my kids walk in it. It was littered with trash and toys and needed to be torn down. The beach access you have is all but useless because on that side of he island the beach is only about ten feet of sand that drips off sharply as soon as you enter the water. Public beaches are 1.1 and 2.4 miles away. The grill was disgusting. Shower curtain rods were so rusty they were difficult to use. The “cable tv” was public access and only had a few channels (no big deal to me, but might be for some people) and the internet was 1mb/s so you can forget streaming, or even checking your email with any speed. I used my data the whole time I was there. No pier you can use( the one on the pic is neighbors). And there was a random rusty old window unit in the dining room floor.
I find it odd that you never contacted me with any concern.
I find it odd that you have exact measured distances (1.1 miles and 2.4 miles) to public beaches, but ignore the fact that dedicated beach access (Public) was less than 1,000 feet away.
I find it odd that you never once called me to address any of these issues. Not once. My cell number is even posted on the house.
Not sure why you didn't call me.
You, wanted to flame the property. I dispute a great portion of your rant...but, things can and do happen between tenants. I should have been given the chance to satisfy you.
I would have moved you to another house.
I would have given you a refund.
I would have had whatever issue fixed.
I would have at least tried to make you happy - you did not give me a chance.
I find that very odd.
Never in 15 years of renting out my properties has anyone NOT CALLED me with a problem.
Yes, things happen. Based on your actions, I'm not sure anything or anybody would or could satisfy you.
A great place!
We had such a great time here. The house had absolutely everything we needed for a comfortable stay - comfortable beds, plenty of towels, all necessary kitchen utensils and appliances. The wifi was great and there was an incredible supply of DVD movies. We loved sitting on the back porch every evening enjoying the beautiful sunsets over the bay. We had an awesome time playing with the ghost crabs and hermit crabs on the bay side and also playing in the waves and watching the dolphins on the Gulf side. Unfortunately, we did not have the chance to use the kayaks but, the owner, John, was kind enough to bring a new one by in case we needed it. John was awesome about everything - very responsive. I would definitely recommend this place and this island if you are looking for a relaxing getaway.
Love the location!
This house is the perfect location. We enjoyed watching the dolphins play in the bay and the pelicans fish. The bay side was perfect for the kids. The beach is just a short walk across the street. We had so much fun minus the rain.
Glad y'all enjoyed your time on the Island. June was an unusual month for rain with a Tropical Storm, as well.
Come back anytime.
We loved the house and the location. There was 10 in our party and we had plenty of space to spread out. They have done lots of updates to the house (paint, bedding, new picnic table, grill ). We also had a blast with the kayaks and fishing in the Mississippi Sound. What a Great week on the beach!!!
We love it when our guests enjoy their stay. Thank you for your visit and review.
Great place, just needs a more thorough cleaning
LOCATION: Great! Just a short walk to the beach on the sound side and right across the street from a public beach on the gulf side.
HOUSE: Perfect size for one family; several dead light bulbs; blinds fell off the wall in one room in the middle of the night; shelf in the master bath is about to fall off the wall; it was clean.
AMMENITIES: Two of the three kayaks had cracked hulls and took in water, there were paddles and life jackets for each; We found dirty dishes in the dishwasher and towels in the dryer; there is a large charcoal grill that's rusting out but still usable and a small, newer charcoal grill—both were totally full of ash and we had to clean them out before they could be used; the fridge was really nice, just needed a new water filter; the stove and oven was in good shape, but one of the burners isn't working; there were also available some sand toys, four beach chairs, three lounge chairs and a hammock on a stand.
These minor issues did not affect our stay—we had a lovely time. All-in-all, it's a nice property and an affordable price.
Thank you for your review. I've corrected a few of the items already. New cleaning crew, new grill, bulbs and blinds. I will take care of the others this week. I did not know about those. Thanks again for your visit and review.
Great location, beautiful scenery, quiet and serene.
We had a wonderful time in Dauphin Island. It's beautiful, quiet, relaxing and peaceful. We had my parents and my family including our 7 year old son and everyone enjoyed themselves. From fishing, walking on the beach, mini-golfing, hiking in Shell Mound park and the Bird Sanctuary, visiting the Estuarium, taking the ferry to Gulf Shores, and having coffee while reading a book on the porch...it was absolutely wonderful! The slogan of the island in 'how family vacations used to be' was spot on. We'll be back!! Thanks again for the wonderful hospitality!
