About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 5)

Our home, Villa Colibri, is a spacious and artistic colonial home located in the neighborhood of Guadiana just 15 minutes walk from downtown. We are 5 minutes from the wonderful Juarez Park and the Instituto Allende Art and Language School where you can learn to paint and speak Spanish at your leisure. Finally, our home is close to food markets, a gym, tennis courts, golf, and shopping.

Our home was decorated by a local interior designer and it offers the ambiance of Mexico, while being quiet, large, and comfortable. We have two master bedrooms each with a full bath, walk-in closet, and fireplace. There is also a full kitchen with the option of having catering. The rooftop terrace offers fine views of the main church of San Miguel and sunsets.

The large and open living room and dining room have high boveda ceilings and wrought iron chandeliers. Both look out to the lovely, private, bi-level garden is which is totally enclosed with flowers, a fountain, patio furniture, barbeque, and hammock (perfect for a siesta).

We have three cable televisions, high-speed internet, and local phone service. Our home is serviced by our gardener five to six days per week and a housekeeper two times per week. Our property is listed with Hacienda for tax purposes.

About Susan Hassenplug

We are a retired professional couple who live in Lake Tahoe, CA. We are actively involved in our community, volunteering and participating in local events. We enjoy continuing this lifestyle in San Miguel by taking art and language courses, attending music and live theater events, and the wide variety of cultural festivities that take place often in San Miguel. We love nature and gardening, as is evident in our garden at Villa Colibri. We would love to share our home with you!

Susan Hassenplug purchased this house in 2004

Why Susan Hassenplug chose Guadiana

We choose San Miguel de Allende because of its charm, warm people, and beautiful colonial setting. There is an abundance of art, music, theater, and wonderful restaurants to enjoy while relaxing in our beautiful home.

What makes this house unique

Our property is unique because it is located in a residential area yet is a short and beautiful walk to downtown through the park (Parque Juarez). It has a lovely and private garden with a fountain for a relaxing atmosphere. Finally, we love the tasteful and authentic Mexican decorations throughout our home. Wi-Fi available.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We just came back last night and wanted to let you know what a great time we had. Francisco and Paula were great and very helpful in every way. Your house is more beautiful than the pictures show and my kids and I enjoyed ourselves very much I will be sending the keys back on Monday and thanks for everything.

Villa Colibrì is a beautiful, restorative, very lovely place to be in a city that must be seen.

Many reviews already outline the luxurious and delightful details of the Hassenplug home. I’ll not repeat those words other than to heartily agree. Certainly I feel the opportunity to stay in such a wonderful setting is a gift to all of us who come their way. We were charmed by San Miguel de Allende. The world needs more of this Mexico. We were fortunate to enjoy the Christmas season of posadas, the Parochia and many other cathedral settings. Divine! Our favorite restaurants are El Pegaso, Nectar and La Mancha coffee shop. They took very good care of us and we soon became friends. I’ll admit we went to Starbucks, but it was fun, and we only took a taxi twice: out to the Charco and the Mirador lookout. It’s a beautiful, beautiful time. We leave warmed, cheered and energized. Thank you John and Susan!

Five wonderful weeks in San Miguel

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Villa Colibri in San Miguel. The house is beautiful and we never tired of looking at the many decorative objects and the garden and it even had a washing machine and dryer which was wonderful since we were there for almost five weeks. The house is about 30 to 45 minutes walking to the Jardin. We enjoyed taking a new route each day. We recommend taking the city walking tour sponsored by the Library when you first get here.

You will find everything you need just a short block from the house on Cinco de Mayo. On that block there is a tienda that has most everything, a fruit and vegetable market, a tortilla store, chicken wing restaurant, barber/beauty shop, and a really good restaurant called Pork Belly. You also can get bus #7 at the corner of Cinco de Mayo and Calle Moras that will take you right to the Centro for 7 Pesos.

It should be noted that San Miguel has no traffic lights or stop signs and pedestrians always have right of away. It seems to work fine. July and August when we were there is the so-called rainy season, but it didn't rain that much and then only a slight sprinkle in the late afternoon. Also internet service was somewhat intermittent, especially during daytime hours.

We would highly recommend this listing, but hope it doesn't become too popular because we may want to return.

Beautiful house with enchanting garden

  • 5 of 5

I so enjoyed my one month stay last September at Villa Colibri that I can't possibly say enough good things about it! The elegant house with the incredibly beautiful garden is in a wonderful neighborhood where one can walk to the center of town as well as many neighborhood restaurants. Local markets and stores are conveniently located within a couple of blocks. I think I found the best breakfast tamales at the stand a half block away at the end of Moras at Cinco de Mayo. The owners could not have been nicer and were attentive to all my needs and requests. I hope to stay at Villa Colibri again.

Perfect House for San Miuel Vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our two week visit in this Casa was beyond amazing! It filled our hearts with joy! The personality of the house made us fell like a a resident rather than a tourist. It was clean, comfortable and well situated with the beauty of Mexican aesthetes . The outdoor garden patio and lovely water fountain was soothing to the soul. It was my favorite area for morning coffee watching the humming birds and butterflies only to return in the late afternoon to enjoy wine before returning to our favorite restaurant Tio Lucas. The owner left a book of instruction with map and tips which guided us to enjoy the town. The property manager and gardener was joyous and most helpful. Paula also took very good care of us! My only regret we had to leave and by posting this glowing review others will discover our treasure and it will become more difficult for us to return.Oh! one more thing....the photos do not express the true beauty of the house. We will return!

Ticked All The Boxes

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed all over the globe. So, believe us when we say this place is special in many ways. First, the interior. It is gorgeously decorated, very spacious, well-maintained, chock full of all the necessities for our comfort including a helpful personally-organized information guide (restaurant, medical, etc.), very reliable internet service, and an extensive cable-channel selection which we watched in the upstairs bedroom and the living room. In addition, we enjoyed listening to a variety of CDs. The exterior. What a bonus! In the stunning garden/terrace, we watched the hummingbirds, sipped wine, read books, surfed the internet, ate breakfast, and strolled as we were in awe of the abundant variety of plants and flowers. On the rooftop patio, we watched more hummingbirds and could see well-kept horses and goats in the distance. The location suited our needs in terms of running three times per week in Juarez Park, shopping at Mega supermarket, and eating at the many restaurants in the adjacent San Antonio neighborhood. Finally, their staff was superb! We would rent this place again and again.
