Fabulous property, very spacious and open. Great for gathering for meals and games. We wish the guest cottage was WiFi connected, and had a less "woodsy"/musty/damp smell. As described in the listing, the driveway is a challenge, but being fore-warned was fore-armed, and we all managed to navigate it without incident. The owner's specific detailed directions were spot on. The beautiful mountain setting contributed greatly to our wonderful weekend celebrating our daughter's wedding at Early Mountain Vineyard.
Peaceful, fun and comfortable
What an absolutely wonderful place! Our party consisted of 3 families with small children and we had a great time! The house was clean, fully equipped with everything we needed and located in a gorgeous, peaceful area. We loved spending our lazy mornings in the large porch while the kids played outside. There was plenty of space for them to safely explore and use their imagination. We fished and hiked nearby as well. John was always available to answer questions both before and during the trip. We will definitely be back!
Great Family Retreat
We enjoyed a lovely family vacation in at this large and well-equipped family home. The secluded setting is a wonderful escape "off the grid" where time is spent resting and reconnecting with loved ones. The home boasts many interesting books and games, a wonderful kitchen to cook in, and plenty of space to relax. We took little trips to Shenandoah National Park and Charlottesville. We enjoyed watching the sunrise over the mountains from the double-decker porch. Highly recommended!
A truly MAGICAL getaway!
We had the opportunity to experience this home recently and all we can say is Wow! A quick birthday road trip turned into an absolutely perfect mountain getaway. We selected the house based on the listing and photos and NOTHING was less than 100% accurate when we arrived. Our experience was spot on with the rest of the positive reviews. The home is appointed in such a way that you don't feel like you're in a rental, but rather that you are staying at your much more fortunate friend's house in the mountains! The drive through the valley, the climb up to the house, the first steps in the door all paled in comparison to the feeling of total warmth and comfort once we settled in by the fireplace. The decision to stay here rather than other properties in the price range was absolutely worth it. We truly could have spent a couple of weeks and not enjoyed everything the house had to offer. The porches, the views, the rooms, the property just kept on getting better. The ONLY thing that we weren't pleased with was leaving and not knowing when exactly we could make plans to return. A summer family get-together? A Fall family reunion? Or Maybe a cozy winter retreat? We'll take one of each! You will NOT be disappointed with your stay. Thanks John for the opportunity to share your home with us! We will return!!! Greg and Shelly
Great house for family/group getaway!
John (owner) was super easy to work with and the house was great for getting away during the holiday weekend. I would easily recommend this to others looking for a nice place place to stay in the Madison, VA area.
Great House for Groups
Our group of 10 adults loved staying in this house and there was plenty of room for everyone. The huge kitchen/dining/living room area makes a great space for hanging out, meals, and games - the pictures do not do it justice. A ping pong table and foosball table, along with a steam sauna, were touches that really put this location over the top. The separate guest cottage was a wonderful convenience for a couple with a baby.
The only drawbacks included: a very large spider and lots of stinkbugs, along with the steepest driveway I've ever seen. Also, the one attempted indoor fire made the whole first floor smoky, even though we built the fire toward the back of the fireplace as suggested - perhaps the chimney needs cleaning.
However, the entire group agreed that we would love to come back, especially in the summer or fall when we could do more outdoor activities and enjoy the beautiful porch and view.
The property is located about a mile from Graves Mill, VA and is just off of Bluff Mountain Road, bordering on the Shenanndoah National Park. The area is lovely and unspoiled, very scenic, with easy and close access to the Rapidan and Conway Rivers as well as Graves Mill hiking trail.
Other Activities: Antiquing, music festivals, seasonal festivals, historic sites, mountain trail hiking, trout fishing, swimming, rafting, canoeing.
