About Alan

The quest for tranquility is one we all strive for. Having devoted 25 years running my own business and yet another 10 working for a Fortune 500 company, I opted for early retirement to continue my search. My previous life afforded me the opportunity to travel the world; China, Russia, the Baltic, Europe, Africa, South Africa, Australia, Greece and Portugal to name a few. Each time I visited a foreign country I tried to picture myself retiring in its midst with its specific climate, traditions and way of life. Portugal was on the verge of getting the nod until I discovered healthcare and taxes on foreigners were not conducive to my parameters I had established for myself. My first visit to Costa Rica was perpetrated by a business associate who indicated his parents had retired here several years prior. He arranged for my visit to see them and the rest is history. It is here that I find the tranquility that I’ve never lost nor ever will. It is here that I found a mountaintop that can now be shared for others to enjoy the views of the Pacific, and the Central Valley. It is here at Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) that one can find a glimpse into the secrecy of nature; Toucans, parrots, sloths, iguana, giant woodpeckers and flora comparable to the Garden of Eden.

Why Alan chose San José

This breathtaking home is located on top of a mountain in Puriscal, Costa Rica. Experience rural Costa Rica landscape, amazing lightning shows, toucans, buzzards, cows! We have a few dogs as well. Mountain top views of the Ocean with amazing sunsets and perfect climate year round.

*Pick fruit from our fruit trees around the house. Oranges, Limes, Sweet Lime, Starfruit, Avocados, Bananas..

What makes this guest house unique

Watch the sunset over the Gulf of Nicoya on your balcony set 4,000 feet above sea level.

Guestbook comments from the owner

(Transcribed from the in-house guest book)

These views are breathtaking! And it is impossible to capture with pictures. It is something that can only be appreciated in person. The rolling clouds could be enjoyed all day and the twinkling lights of the Central Valley are incredible. We began our journey two weeks ago in Manzanillo on the Caribbean side, worked our way up to Arenal and La Fortuna, then here for the final part of our trip. The amazing Twilight Bunker was the perfect end tour honeymoon. We have experienced many things here and your kindness and hospitality will not be forgotten. Now we are sitting here, bags packed, and not at all ready to go home to slushy Minnesota (several inches of slush expected tonight). We only wish we could stay and enjoy this place longer. We couldn't have asked for a better experience here. Take care and, Alan; best of wishes for a long and happy marriage with Yamileth.

Pura Vida,

Mike & Erin

Stunning and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This property took our breath away! This house was exactly what we wanted and were not disappointed at all. The location was ideal with access to everything we needed. Located not far outside of San José we were able to enjoy the city while also having all the privacy we wanted! The views are spectacular and the property is well maintained. We enjoyed a fire on top of the mountaintop and spent many evenings watching the sunset off the balcony.

Alan and Skeeter were extremely helpful! They welcomed us with open arms and amazing coffee. They were able to give us tips and inside information to get the most of the country. Don't miss going to swim at the local swimming spot!

You will not be disappointed with this house! Simply amazing! Can't wait to return!

Muchas gracias,

Alan, Skeeter, Ganeisha y familia!

absolutly breathtaking

  • 5 of 5

This place is an absolute must see. The house is amazing and built to really capitalize the beautiful views and is also very secluded. You literally have a whole mountaintop to yourself! The property is extremely well kept; fresh lime/banana/orange trees, all sorts of beautiful trees/plants and the grass/hedges are always cut pristinely. The weather is perfect as well, its not hot enough you need AC and its not cold enough that you need a heater. I would definitely recommend bringing a pair of warm pants as it does cool off a tad in the evening during their "winter" season. I also would highly recommend using a motor cycle for transportation, its a lot easier to get around Puriscal and that's the Tico way!

Allan is an all around stand up guy, he was extremely helpful with everything whether it be places to eat, sights to see, or helping us with the language barrier. He welcomed us with open arms and really made our trip a more cultural experience. We will forever be grateful for that and happy we have him and his beautiful family as friends. Definitely learn a bit of Spanish if planning to travel here, as the people here are very eager to talk with you and get to know you!

You really wouldn't be disappointed booking with Allan!

Be adventurous!

Another 5 Star Review!

  • 5 of 5

Once again this property blew us away with it's amazing views and attention to detail on the property itself. We had sunshine, we had rain, we had wind and calm. We loved every minute of all of it. The great thing about this area is that you can stay as busy or as laid back and everything in between. Our host Alan was so helpful and accommodating in giving us advice on where to check things out in the area. Great local restaurants and people we got to experience!

Highly recommend this property!

Thank you Alan!

Stunning view

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and the views from every angle were just amazing. The morning view from our bed energized us and helped us get the day started. The property had a safe, private and relaxed atmosphere. The house was clean and equipped with everything we needed for our short stay. Alan met us and helped us find the property and also answered any questions we had about surrounding areas. It was our best vacation we've had, definitely a do over.

Owner's Response: So pleased your first visit was a memorable one and we hope you'll return as well. A visit to Cima Estelar (Stellar Heights) provides you with an excellent taste of the real Costa Rica without the throngs of tourists and troublesome traffic of San Jose. Perched on a mountaintop with a 4,000 foot elevation provides you an unbelievable perspective of the Pacific Ocean and the entire Central Valley. We thank you for your kind words and look forward to your return. Skeeter Coleman Owner

A perfect getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We only had the opportunity to stay here for three nights, but they'll be some of the most memorable of all our travels around the planet!

The drive up from San Jose was amazing, with views just getting better and better as we ascended the mountain. The roads have twists and turns however, they're perfectly paved, as in, we didn't see one pothole...just smooth black pavement.

Alan our host, was so kind and came into Puriscal to escort us the rest of the way. You'd need a GPS of some sort as there are no street names, but once you're there, there are lots of landmarks to get your bearings.

You'll want a 4x4 to reach the property as you take the final ascent to your parking spot and the bunker.

The views are simply breathtaking, and you have to experience it to fully appreciate how amazing the Twilight Bunker is! The property is beautifully manicured with hummingbirds visiting the lush gardens! Both the inside and outside were immaculate. Apple TV was a nice touch, and wifi is fast (if you really need to stay connected up there). It has everything you'll need to make yourself at home.

The shower. I never want to shower anywhere else now!

The water out of the tap is fed from a natural spring and is amazing! Don't waste your money on bottled water.

Another nice touch is the journal for guests to write in, so take the time to share.

Alan knows the places to go, so listen to his advice. Pollo Granjero, the fried chicken place in Puriscal is the best, by far, we've ever had. Two of you can eat for under $10.

The people in Puriscal are so friendly, smiling faces everywhere, and always willing to lend a hand if you're looking for something.

The one and only negative thing to write about is that we had to leave. We will most certainly return, next time though for a minimum of a week!

Thanks so much Alan for being such a great host, and all the best to your family!

See you next year! Mark & Stacey - Canada
