When we renovated and redesigned the floor plan of Hawthorne we wanted to open the house up into a greater expansive living area. We wanted to design the bedrooms so that each one offered a fantastic view of the mountains. My wife, Sara, is a professional chef and cookbook author so we wanted the house to have a wonderfully functional kitchen for entertaining and testing recipes. Since we wouldn't be using the house full time we wanted to design the house as a vacation rental and built in many amenities and comforts with renters in mind.
The location is private and quiet but only a short walk, bike ride, or drive to all of the local attractions. It's a two minute walk to Mirror Lake, the lake the village sits on and a five minute walk to downtown Lake Placid.
We are long time Lake Placid vacationers who wanted a more permanent presence in Lake Placid. Hawthorne is a classic Adirondack retreat and we loved its' uniqueness.
Lake Placid has the most amount of diversified recreational activities we have ever found anywhere and it is in the most beautiful settings we have ever found. The house has incredible views and sleeping porches. It's location is private yet close to the heart of Lake Placid. The house is in the center of everything that makes lake Placid special
We have stayed at Hawthorne House several times...sometimes just our family of 5 and once with another family (9 people in all). There is plenty of space for all, including bathrooms and bedrooms. The kitchen is AMAZING--comfortable, spacious, with dishes/cookware/flatware galore. Professional quality stove/oven. Living room/fireplace/cozy space for relaxing and a separate TV room just in case the kids want to watch movies at night. We have always stayed in the winter so have never been able to use the many screened in porches or the outdoor eating area, but they are beautiful as well. The home is close to everything Lake Placid has to offer and is just incredibly comfortable and homey. I love the eclectic decor. The owner is terrific too!
We spent a magical week in Lake Placid watching our kids compete in the Junior National Cross Country Ski Championships. I viewed many beautiful houses for our group of 10 parents, but chose the Hawthorne house. Best decision ever!! It truly is a home, not just a rental. We felt as if the owners had stepped out, and would be returning any moment to join us for our fireside chats, delicious dinners prepared in their gourmet kitchen, puzzle time, or just another cup of coffee sitting around the amazing harvest table. The house was cozy and full of natural light, the fireplace created a warm gathering spot in the evenings, and the beds were incredibly comfortable. The location of the house was perfect. It is a quick drive into town, but an equally quick walk. We walked or ran the Mirror Lake loop everyday (as there was no snow for us to ski). We loved learning more about the history of the Lake Placid Club houses which the Hawthorne house is one of. The owners had snippets of that history tucked around the house.
If any of us are lucky enough to make it back to Lake Placid, there would not be any other house that we would consider. Thank you to the owners for sharing your beautiful space!
This house was great for our family get together. The beds were comfy, the bedrooms were lovely with great bathrooms. The kitchen was gourmet with everything you could need. The views were gorgeous and location was so convenient to town. I would highly recommend this lovely home.
This is our 2nd time at Hawthorne Home (it is a home, not just a house) We are a group of 4 couples that take yearly winter getaways for what we call our Big Chill Weekend. From the moment you walk in you feel like you are visiting a friend or relative because this is not your average rental. Everything you could possibly need or want is here. The view is spectacular and everything is close by for whatever Winter activity you choose. Nothing like sitting in front of the fireplace sipping wine and playing games after a long day of snowmobiling, skiing or shopping. There are tons of activities and restaurants. The owners are awesome and just a phone call away for anything you need. If you love to cook as we do at least once during our stay, the kitchen is awesome. Everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING you need is there. It is so warm and cozy and as much as I would like to keep it our little secret it is too good NOT to share. The area and location are as perfect as the peaceful view. My review can't do this home as much justice as it deserves. It is truly perfect. Can't wait until next year!!
From the moment we ( 6 adults) turned the corner and saw the house, to the moment we had to pack our bags and say goodbye, we could not have enjoyed our time in Lake Placid to a greater degree. The late summer weather was a dream come true and Hawthorne House was the very definition of hospitality, pairing classic Adirondack charm with modern comforts.
Features that stood out to us were: the large private bedrooms with ensuite baths; the ensuite sleeping porches that enabled us to fall asleep "outside" in the cool night air beneath a canopy of stars (all the while being only two steps away from our warm and cozy bedroom); the kitchen that was large, equipped with everything possible, and which ended up being where we spent a lot of time hanging out; a separate TV room that prevented the TV from interfering with conversation (and vice versa); the mountain view from the front windows and from the outdoor dining table; and perhaps most of all the way the house simply fostered relaxation.
Beyond the house, our days easily filled with a variety of activities that met each of our interests. Dog walks around Mirror Lake, mountain biking, road riding, scenic drives through the fall foliage, casual strolls over to and around town, shopping, and visiting Olympic Venues - "Do you believe in Miracles ?" - were just a few of the ways we enjoyed all that the region has to offer. We only went out for dinner twice, but both times our destinations were only a short walk away.
From my first contact with Peter he was interested in our visit to Lake Placid, and did all he could to help us plan our stay in the Adirondacks. The listing description was accurate, the photos accurately reflected the house, and the property was clean and well maintained. We hope to return someday.
Our group of 6 (3 adult couples), booked a long weekend here for our Annual Mini Winter Get-a-way. Right now, I'm wishing one of our six was a writer so they could do this review justice. Simply put, our Friday-Monday trip far exceeded our expectations. The home is lovely and you truly feel like your at home, not in rental property. The location is perfect, the home is perfect, the area is perfect ... Already booking dates for our next trip. Read the reviews - the raves are NO exaggeration!
