Overview

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps max. 5), Beachfront

We hope you feel inspired while staying in our recently-renovated beachfront home, Casa de la Musa (House of the Muse), directly on the spectacular beach of Punta Uva. This is the home where famous Costa Rican author, Anacristina Rossi, lived for nearly 15 years and wrote stories about the life and beauty of the Caribbean coast. Her works include 'La Loca de Gandoca,” which, after its release in 1992, helped save the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge from development (her books are available to read in English and Spanish at the house). While sitting in the home’s breezy deck and looking through the magnificent jungle gardens towards the gorgeous Punta Uva beach, you can easily imagine how Rossi felt inspired to write about this Costa Rican paradise.

Casa de la Musa is a clean, recently-restored Caribbean-style cabin with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, full kitchen, screened porch, open deck, and many modern amenities, including wi-fi, air-conditioned bedrooms, and a digital music player. Though the house was substantially upgraded during the spring and summer of 2011, it still maintains much of its Caribbean charm, including its original wood floors, traditional balcony seat, and solid, locally-built furniture.

Surrounded by lush natural gardens full of exotic plants and wildlife, Casa de la Musa is one of only a handful of houses directly on Punta Uva beach, the most swimmable beach in the Puerto Viejo area (the house sits 50 meters from the water line, the closest Costa Rican homes can legally be to the ocean). Outside Magazine and other travel publications have rated Punta Uva one of the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world. The house is also near some of the area’s most wonderful restaurants, dive centers, surf spots, massage studios, yoga classes and all of the fun activities of Puerto Viejo. You can reach the trails of the Manzanillo-Gandoca refuge by a quick bike ride or even quicker car ride, explore the various beaches by foot or bicycle, or just relax in a hammock looking out onto the jungle and the Caribbean.

The home has a clean indoor kitchen with large windows opening towards the beach, garden, and patio areas. The kitchen, significantly renovated summer 2011, has a refrigerator/freezer, gas stove and oven, appliances (coffee maker, toaster, mixer), dishware and utensils. An open dining area has seating for up to 6. House has 2 full bathrooms with a shower downstairs and shower upstairs. Hot water (not standard in Caribbean homes) is available in both showers, in the upstairs sink, and in the kitchen sink. Drinking water (2 18 liter jugs) and water dispenser are provided guests generally don’t need to buy water. Linens, house towels, beach towels, beach chairs are included. There is an alarm system, and a safe box large enough to store a laptop and other important personal belongings. Cleaning is included after every 3 nights for stays of 5 nights or more. Additional cleaning can be arranged for a fee. Laundry service is provided on the property once for every week. (1 load per 4 guests). Additional loads anytime are $10 per load (1 load = 5kg or 11lbs).

We will try our best to make your stay at Casa de la Musa a great one! Evi is our friendly and experienced property manager who will help make your stay comfortable, safe, and fun. Please feel free to talk to her about any questions, suggestions, or concerns you may have about your visit. She speaks Spanish, English, and German. Our caretaker family (Carlos, Yolanda, and their little girl, Genesis) lives in a small casita next door to the main house and assists with maintenance and security. In the unlikely event you have concerns during the night, they are always available to help (they also have a friendly dog, Lokie, who barks at newcomers but will quickly get to know you!).

A few important notes: 1) Casa de la Musa is surrounded by jungle plants and wildlife. While we make a concerted effort to keep the house clean and comfortable, it may not be the right place for you if you hate bugs, spiders or other critters. 2) Regarding privacy, the casita is easily visible by guests from the main house, and you may see our caretaker family on the property during your stay. While they make every effort to respect your privacy, travelers who would like complete seclusion may be happier at another property.

We believe travelers looking for a true Caribbean beach and jungle experience will love spending a vacation in this charming, comfortable home. We hope you enjoy your time in Punta Uva as much as we have!

About Evi Gaggstatter

We are Jeff and Carrie, a young couple that fell in love with the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica while traveling in the summer 2008. We were engaged in the area later that year, and we now live in Los Angeles, California, USA with our 2 little girls (one shown here in her own rainforest :-). While we can't go down to Punta Uva as much as we would like right now, as the kids grow up we expect to spend lots of wonderful time here. In the meantime, please enjoy the house, the Caribbean, the jungle, and the unique culture of the Puerto Viejo area as much as we do!

Evi Gaggstatter purchased this house in 2008

Why Evi Gaggstatter chose Limon

To make a long story short, we stumbled upon this property after a chance encounter with a real estate agent one night at a restaurant. We were already drawn to the rich blend of cultures -- Tico, Afro-Caribbean, and many others -- in the area, as well as to the natural beauty of the beaches and jungle. When the agent showed us this property, we realized this was a dream location for us. While we never expected to buy a home, we had a Costa Rican friend who joined us and encouraged us to take the plunge. We hope this will be a source of joy for us and many others in the years to come.

What makes this house unique

We love the location on the beach between Puerto Viejo and Manzanillo. The original house was a solid, traditional, open-air Caribbean cabin. While we maintained most of the original design features, we made significant renovations in spring/summer 2011 so that the home now has many of the comforts and amenities that we and many other travelers around the world appreciate.

Beautiful spot

  • 3 of 5

Evi was very wellcoming. The location is excellent. Landscaping is lovely. The beach is great. Many local wild birds and animals.

However, even though the house is clean, it is showing its age. It really needs an upgrade. I think the rent is too high for the present condition of the house. If it was two thirds as much, I could consider the house "quaint".

Sincerely

Ron King

Amazing location. Very rustic.

  • 3 of 5

Loved the location and the rustic feel. Was not like the pictures at all, we were expecting a bit more. The dog Loki was wonderful. He was our guard dog. We got to see great wildlife including the moma sloth and her baby. If you want a camping feel to your trip this is great with the outside kitchen it's perfect.

This is a lovely, private spot

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our recent stay at Casa de la Musa. The property manager could not have been nicer, or more accommodating to our needs. The house is charming and just steps from a beautiful beach. It was great to have the open air portion of the home during daytimes, and screened-in upstairs at night. During our stay we had a sleepy three toed sloth in the tree adjacent to the bedroom window, and a family of howler monkeys came by every day. A word of caution about big spiders if you are nervous about them- they are in the yard and active at night, but didn't bother with us. The water is a bit smelly but we were supplied with more than enough bottled water for our needs. The house feels very secure with the caretakers next door and the alarm system. I would highly recommend this property!

Beautiful spot right on the beach

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Casa de la Musa! The home was great for our family with two young children. The rooms are very comfortable and the location is amazing. We were steps from Punta Uva beach, a gorgeous and quiet beach that was great for swimming and exploring. There was a troop of howler monkeys hanging around the house several days and great bird watching from the porch. We are already planning our next visit! Thank you for a very special family vacation.

Secluded hideaway right on the beach!

  • 4 of 5

Stayed here for three nights with my husband and two boys. We absolutely loved Casa Musa - it was one minute walk to a beautiful quiet beach. We snorkeled and boogie-boarded. The beach is miles and miles long up against a dense rain forest filled with birds, monkeys and sloths. The kitchen on-site is open air and we were able to cook our own meals. If you want to eat out --Selvins up the street was great for seafood. Recommend for couples with older children --beds were doubles--so it was quite cozy. Water has heavy mineral content so you can't drink it but there's plenty of drinking water supplied. Prepare to hear Howler monkeys --these amazing creatures can wake up a whole forest!! Loved this place could have stayed for a whole week! ❤

Delightful experiences and adventures along the Caribbean Sea coast!

  • 5 of 5

Casa de la Musa is a great place to stay on the southern coast line of the Caribbean Sea in Costa Rica. The home is located off the main road, away from traffic. You'll hear the ocean waves about 60 meters from the home and feel the breeze from the ocean most of the time. A short walk down the pathway takes you directly to the ocean front. The home is surrounded by jungle and abundant wildlife is seen and heard often. Howler monkeys awoke us and a tri-colored heron fished from the shore.

The weather is perfect with warm evenings and days!

The home was very comfortable and provided a relaxing vacation. Walking on the beach is easy in both directions. Excellent swimming is available along the beach. We snorkeled just off the beach in front of the house and saw colorful fish. Biking and kayak rentals are available nearby.

There are restaurants within walking distance and many more in short driving or biking distance.
