Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8-10)

The Retreat at Pipestem is a beautiful ten acre property, sitting quietly, hidden in the woods, right next to Pipestem State Park. Golf is only a 15 minute walk away, hiking trails start within minutes from the Retreat and all the activities the State Park has to offer are available to our guests as well. You can choose how active you want to be, from playing golf, to horseback riding, antiquing, dining, archery, a visit to the nature centre, to boating, hunting and fishing, or enjoy the quiet nature around you from the deck or the porch.

Our newest of three cabins, the Black Bear was finished late 2009 and incorporates all the things we learned from remarks our guests made. Simple things like a bedroom on the main floor, a Jacuzzi tub, cathedral ceilings, a loft with TV, an complete kitchen, a Jacuzzi tub, a three zoned air and heating system and a pellet stove as a fireplace to sit around with a life fire on a chilly evening in fall. There is a huge deck of 10 x 40 feet and a covered porch for when it's raining.

The cabin (and we can hardly call this a cabin anymore) is built of full logs and the wall in the living room and loft has windows from floor to the top of the roof. Inside, the cabin is fitted out with good comfortable furniture. A real log dining room and master bed room set, make this cabin complete.

Our own website gopipestem.com will give a more complete picture of what we have to offer, including online booking and secure payments and floorplans.

About Lisa or Hans

My name is Lisa Mateboer and I was born and raised in West Virginia. I became a teacher in Charlotte, NC, but always was traveling back to West Virginia to visit my mother who still lives there. Wanting a place to stay I found what we later called The Retreat at Pipestem. My husband works out of the country a lot and one of the things I looked at was whether I would stay there alone.

Being a teacher in a big city, I always longed to go back to West Virginia. Having two cats, always made it difficult to find a good place to stay and the Cardinal is just ideal to bring them.

As my husband works on ships and is away from home for months at a time, I wanted a place where I could be close to my mother who still lives in West Virginia and also feel safe.

Lisa or Hans purchased this house in 2006

Why Lisa or Hans chose West Virginia

When we found The Retreat at Pipestem we simply fell in love with the place. It's so beautiful and quiet and yet so close by the State Park that we could not resist. There were two log homes at that time and the Black Bear we built a few years later. We found a local builder who did a beautiful job building and finishing the log home. The location is ideal, right next to the StatePark, away from the main roads, but still easy accesible.

What makes this house unique

The saying that for real estate, the three most important things are location, location and location is certainly true for the Black Bear. Within a mile of the Lodge of Pipestem State Park with all the activities going with it. Being away from the main roads but still within of few miles of them, make this place a true gem amongst vacation homes.

Three families met here to have a weekend away and it was great! The cabin is very cozy and was well stocked and very clean.

Very nice, needs work on the little things.

  • 4 of 5

The Black Bear cabin is extremely nice and was overall a good experience. The only odd part was a lack of attention to detail on the small things that really make a rental awesome. The pellet stove was broken, there was hand soap in the showers instead of shampoo, and the foosball table was broken and at some point that break (broken leg) was concealed to hide the damage (probably by a previous renter, not the owners' fault). Small things overall, as the overall experience was great, but those things were lacking. Lisa was very responsive to our communications and was quite helpful. Pipestem as a whole was awesome... Will be coming back!

Sptacular stay

  • 5 of 5

A woulderful cabin right inside of pipestem state park. So many things to do inside the park that you won't have to leave to have a great time. The cabin was great for our family vacation together. If you want a great place to stay with all of the amenities look no further. The cabin and the views were breath taking. Thanks for sharing your home with us.

October Black Bear Adventure

  • 5 of 5

Last month we enjoyed a 3 night stay at the Black Bear Cabin in Pipestem. We were blessed with the peak of Fall splendor and all it's colors. It was a perfect time for my husband to return to his West Virginia roots and celebrate another Birthday.

The Black Bear cabin is very lovely and nestled in the woods. It is tastefully furnished yet comfortable. I was grateful not to have to bring linens. Additionally, we appreciated amenities such as a pellet stove, outside fire pit, porch swing, washer & dryer and an ionic hairdryer. The kitchen offers modern appliances and cookware.

It was great having access to the manicured grounds of Pipestem Park. I recommend the breakfast buffet at the Lodge - the food was excellent for a modest price. We enjoyed a hike and paddle boat rental on the lake. The sky-lift tram down to the Creek Lodge and Restaurant provided a spectacular view and it was fun. The journey along Skyline Drive was phenomenal. My pictures are incredible. Do not leave home without a camera!

The Owners (Lisa and Hans) answered all my questions within a reasonable amount of time. VRBO also did a nice job on accurate presentation.

Above all, it was a blessing to relax in beautiful surroundings and take in plenty of fresh air

Loved The Bears!!

Week-end breakaway

  • 4 of 5

Black Bear is a beautiful property with all the amenities needed. We loved the outside BBQ and fire pit.

The dish washer gave the ladies a break from doing dishes.

The only problem, not just with this property, (also hotels, B&B, lodges etc) is the fact that one must be out by 10;30 am on a Sunday.....Surely, everybody comes for the weekend, Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. As it turns out, basically, renters have only the full Saturday to enjoy such a lovely place. Sunday morning is wake-up, pack-up and go ! ...... Certainly, most of the time, there won't be anybody moving in so soon.

But we did enjoy our stay, and may be back soon.
