One of a Kind!

  • 4 of 5

Le Mura Etrusche is at the top of Cortona via a mountain road that is very narrow for the last kilometer. The medieval and Etruscan walls are spectacular, as is the view and gardens. The apartment is well appointed. Both a gas and wood fireplace are listed in VRBO; there is a beautiful old hearth and chimney in the living/dining area, but it is was unusable for wood and not set up for gas. That was a disappointment. The windows are high, so the apartment is fairly dark, and there is no cross ventilation so it was difficult to bring in the warm spring air. In the summer, I think the thick stone walls and dark interior would be very welcome after the hot Tuscan sun. This property is very quiet and away from the tourist bustle. We never had a problem parking close to the apartment. As others has noted, there is homemade jam, honey, and a variety of other goodies which make settling in easy. Patrizia takes pride in her garden and encouraged us to enjoy it too. Lucia was flexible about our arrival time, which we appreciated.

What More Could You Want?

  • 5 of 5

Good friends recommended Le Mura Etrusche after their outstanding experience with Patrizia (mother) and Lucia (daughter) in May 2011. It's still outstanding! We arrived a bit late for our 5 night stay due to some difficulty finding this home (see tips below), so after being given a tour of our apartment and the garden (including the stone steps climbing up to the glorious rock outcropping overlooking the valley), Patrizia offered to drive us down into Cortona to Trattoria Dardano, where she introduced us to her friend and made sure there was room for us in this very popular - and delicious - restaurant. Such service!

The apartment is described well in other reviews - we loved it. Let me add that Lucia stocked the refrigerator with breakfast items so we didn't have to shop for food our first morning before we had our coffee! So thoughtful. Also included were some of Patrizia's homemade jam, flavored homemade olive oil and homemade licquor (not for breakfast...I don't think!). We made dinner one evening and planned to eat in the garden overlooking the valley. As we entered the garden, there was Patrizia on her riding mower, working away in the early evening. She stopped and set out a lovely picnic table for us. And on our final night, we took advantage of the offer of dinner made by Patrizia. There is a photo album of items one can choose and the food was simply wonderful - plus Patrizia treated us to some surprises: delicious pickled vegetables and olives from her garden, a refreshing dessert and homemade limoncello or lemon cream. Are you getting a feel for the warm hospitality here? Our hostesses were not intrusive at all, but when we saw them, it added to our experience. This is a wonderful place to stay! Cortona's restaurants are great, too! Beware STEEP walk down and back up...good workout!

Direction tips for first-timers: Climb up the hill to Cortona, look for a TORREONE sign. Follow this and go PAST first archway through wall with lots of parking. The road seems to go away from the wall (valley on your left); keep climbing the hill to the next small commercial area: you'll see TORREONE sign. Turn right: on the left is Locanda "I Grifi" Ristorante (small sign) and, Caffe del Torreone straight ahead. FAR right, downhill a bit, is sign to "Monastero d S. Chiara." This is your gravel road! Right after driving through the ancient archway, look left - you are there. You'll see Patrizia and Lucia's names on their door.

A big slice of heaven

  • 5 of 5

We spent one month at La Mura Etrusche in Lucia's house. It is a charming one bedroom house with a new bathroom and kitchen. It is all on one level rather than the typical Cortona rental on multiple levels. Lucia and her husband Gian Luca are very welcoming. They met us at the house and provided an introduction to the wonderful town of Cortona. There were goodies in the refrigerator for our first breakfast and, importantly, an Italian coffee maker and coffee. Lucia's mother's house was part of our house. She is a doll. We enjoyed a wonderful cooking class in her house and even better, got to eat what she made. Our house was located just inside the walls. Street parking was always easy to find (a great cost savings).

We picked Cortona for its charm and the fact that we could reach many towns easily by car for day trips. We visited 12 towns during our stay. In addition, the house is close to several wonderful hiking trails. The views from our backyard were truly spectacular. As we were at the top of the hill we could see across the entire valley. We DEFINITELY recommend La Mura Estruche and Cortona. We can't wait to return to visit with Patrizia (momma) and Lucia and Gian Luca and stay for another month at La Mura Estruche. In addition to being great hosts and landlords, they are lovely people and our new friends.

A beautiful wedding gift!

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I were fortunate enough to discover this beautiful little property on our wedding trip to Cortona. Patrizia and Lucia treated us as if we were family, with Lucia decorating her car and driving me to the city hall for the wedding and both Lucia and Patrizia taking beautiful candid photos at our wedding ceremony. I cannot express enough what a lovely surprise it was to have such warm and friendly hosts during our stay. We look forward to a return trip to celebrate our anniversary!

Trip of A Lifetime!

  • 5 of 5

Although February may not be the most ideal time to visit Cortona weather wise- the accommodations were outstanding! The apartment is beautiful- including a new kitchen with everything you need. The real stars are the owners though. Patrizia lives next door and we had a fantastic cooking class culminating into a delicious fun lunch. Lucia speaks wonderful english and could not have been more helpful. She picked us up at the airport and was available for anything we needed. It was like having your own personal tour guide who is game for anything! I know I have made friends for a lifetime and will definitely come back to Le Mura Etrusche. Hopefully in the spring/summer or fall to enjoy the spectacular garden!
