About sandra ednie

I grew up in the islands, child of Hawaii, graduate of Punahou. Our family has roots here, since the days of the monarchy. We know no other home, though we are college graduates of mainland universities (and world travelers.) I love the ranches of Waimea and the oceanfront of Puako, the horses and the fish, the greens and the blues of grass, sea, sky. I am older now, and not full of strong opinions. I love to hear the personal stories of each person that comes to Puako, so unique, so endearing. I look forward to meeting you.

sandra ednie purchased this house in 1976

Why sandra ednie chose Puako

This is our family beach house. We have owned on this oceanfront since its inception in the 1950's. It represents peace, paradise, sharing and caring. There is no finer oceanfrontage. Its like swimming in a giant aquarium, or kayaking the coast for a personal adventure.

What makes this house unique

Right on a swimable, snorkeling oceanfrontage and white sand beach.Cool tradewinds, beautiful water, turtles sunning on the rocks, Maui and the Kohala Mountains to view, ever changing, ever interesting. Whales cavort all winter with their splashing and birthing of their young.

Couples seem to enjoy this property most. Cottage feels small and quite simple in this era of elegance and amenities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Though we come here often, I am surprised there are so few reviews.(I just heard that if a place has no or few reviews I shouldn't think of going there so I googled this to see what others said about 82 Puako.) Well,I think perhaps many visitors want to keep their favorite places a bit of a secret, as do I. Most of the people that write in the house guest-book have been using this home for many years. I think the reviews written are accurate, tho we often share the house with other couples whom we have camped or traveled with before so the setup of the house is within our comfort.

The oceanfrontage is about the BEST in all of Puako.

Beautiful Location, Sweet Hosts

  • 4 of 5

The location of this home is unbeatable. Right on the ocean the property is a prime location for watching the sea turtles, enjoying the views and falling asleep to the sound of waves. The home is rustic but fully stocked for enjoying a week in paradise. The owners are sweet and worked to ensure our visit was a pleasurable one. Their house has everything you need for enjoying a week in the sun and surf. We hope to return!

Fall City

A place to shed your stress and commune with nature

  • 5 of 5

My family has traveled to Hawaii many times, and we have stayed at many different types of places - from 5 star hotels/condos to beach front homes - but this is by far the best experience we have had, based on our needs and expectations. We had the beach to ourselves most of the time. The house is simple, but comfortable and fully stocked.

The ability to just unwind, and rejoin the natural world was by far the best part. There was a family of endangered herons that was fledging their babies the week we were there. And of course the turtles. Dozens of turtles just off shore, along with the beautiful reef. This was an eco-vacation without the hype, and on our own schedule.

My favorite Place in the World (Part 2)

  • 5 of 5

So VRBO didn't give me enough room to finish so here the rest.......... If you are coming to Hawaii to have the typical tourist experience with the fancy hotel, the great restaurants, the shopping, the huge swimming pool, etc. etc. then you probably would be better off somewhere else. But if you are looking for something different and unique and way more real Hawaii, then this place is for you. Besides there are world class resorts, restaurants and shopping not vary far away if that is your thing. If not, load up at Coscto, or the supermarket in Kona and you are ready to go. There is a wonderful little store nearby for any other needs. You can buy fresh fish in the little town of Kawaihae 10 minutes away. There is also a nice restaurant there and it is only 20 minutes up to the cooler climate of the town of Waimea with a couple of great restaurants. If you want activities, pick up one of the activities books at the airport and you will find all you want. Personally, I stock up, buy fresh fish and barely leave the place. Basically what it comes down too is what you are looking for in a Hawaiian vacation. This is an amazing place for the right people.

My Favorite Place in the World.....

  • 5 of 5

Full Disclosure..........I've known the owners almost all my life and have stayed at 82 many times. So, can I give a fair review? I think so.

If I had one more trip in me before getting too old to travel it would be here. Why? A lot of reasons, but basically, location, location, location. The other reviews are all 5 stars and give many of the reasons why, all of which I agree with. It is always a joy to walk over the bridge across the pond behind the house and see one of the most majestic views you can imagine. You are literally one step away from what is essentially a private sandy beach. It's not private of course but, it is far away from the public beaches so there are no crowds of tourists. The only people you generally see are a few of the people staying in nearby homes and they are just walking by and not sitting down on your beach. From the big deck you step onto the beach where there are several coconut trees to provide shade, Adirondack chairs where you spend a lot of time enjoying the gorgeous weather, the awesome scenery and beautiful sunsets. Then there are the Green Turtles, lots of them laying around in the shallows feeding or sleeping. They have pretty much lost their fear of humans so you can get quite close to take great pictures. If you are lucky you can find yourself swimming along with them in the deeper water. It's awesome. Oh, then there are the Whales. Literally every day during the winter months the Whales can be seen swimming back and forth not far offshore. They often breach and trust me, that is spectacular and I have the pictures to prove it. There have been nights when it is quiet and the wind is not blowing and you can hear the Whales as they come out of the water and splash back down. Amazing to listen to. At night as you are lying in bed drifting off to sleep the sound of the waves gently rolling across the reef is something you won't find in many places because you are so close to the beach.

So, all that being said, 82 is not for everyone. It is a small, old and rustic essentially one room house. There is a kitchen/living room, one full bath, one half bath and two bedrooms separated by the large bathroom, which are more alcoves than separate rooms so privacy is limited. Then there is a large covered deck and one step to the beach. Kitchen facilities are adequate. It works great for a family or two couples (especially if you are really good friends).

Holy WOW, Batman

I hate to give away such an awesome find to the world at large, but I can't help myself. 82 Puako is an amazing vacation getaway for the right people--and it's not for everyone--that it deserves being crowed about.

First, the location. 82 Puako shares a gorgeous sandy beach with only one other home and is sheltered from everyone else by vegetation. Even the monster new million-dollar construction house three lots north does not have anywhere NEAR the beach that 82 Puako has. The tide pools at low tide are delightfully inhabited by a number of green turtles who like to nap on the lava rocks. The house is equipped with kayaks (one double, one single) and snorkel gear for those who enjoy that. Those who don't can relax in the hammock and the Adirondack chairs which are mostly shaded all day long by the palm trees. You have a stunning view of the Kohala volcano (dormant, if not dead) and will see many tour boats setting anchor in the bay, which tells you how good the snorkeling is. I personally snorkeled out to one of the boats to check out the quality was and was not disappointed!

The house is not fancy, but open and airy and the views from the master bedroom (overlooking the beach) are unbeatable. There is nothing like hearing the waves cresting and watching the bay light up as the sun crests from your pillow. The other bedroom enjoys the sounds from the brackish pond that separates the parking from the house by boardwalk and is full of singing morning birds (including a night heron who is completely unfazed by humans, and very photogenic). As others have noted, there is NO separation between the bedrooms other an a short hallway and a bathroom in between, so it is only a good choice for close friends or family--privacy is not to be expected here. But you won't care.

Puako has a General Store for your last minute needs, but I recommend heading out to Kona to the Sack n Save (Foodland) and Costco for your groceries & gas.

From your Puako nest, most of the island's treasures are within easy reach. Hilo is less than two hours away, and some of the best snorkeling we found (Kahaluu Beach Park) is even closer. Don't miss the bike tours of Hawaii Volcano National Park or the (unmarked) crazy boogie-board surf at Kekaha Kai State Park (unmarked, but across from the well-marked Veteran's Cemetery, just north of the airport on 19).

Honestly, I have never enjoyed a rental so much and will be thrilled to return soon. Thank you, Sandie!

Over the 15 plus years we have enjoyed this modest cabin, we have walked the beach from the south end of Puako Drive to the north, viewing the other larger, fancier homes and none compare to the easy access at 82 for water activities-paddle boards, canoes, snorkeling, etc. The unusual entry pond is attractive and isolates the cabin from traffic and for a family, interesting and educational. The sea turtles give it a flipper up as a napping spot and so do we! We enjoy our 6 AM Kona coffee sitting under the palms in the Adirondack beach chairs. It is a wonderful family experience or a quiet couples getaway. If you feel the need for variety, famous resorts and restaurants are just a short drive away. The local store is very convenient. The cabin owners are friendly "natives".
