Overview

About the property

Cottage, 4 Bedrooms + 3 season Sleeping Porch, 2 Baths (Sleeps 12)

Our family cottage is a single level ranch style layout with (4) bedrooms (three with queen beds and the forth has two twins, a double and a bunk bed; this ''bunk room'' is great for kids). Four couches offer extra sleeping space for kids in the living room and porch if needed. Two full baths (both with showers). The large living room has a cathedral ceiling and knotty pine walls, very popular and still plentiful in northern Michigan. A large stone fireplace (gas). A 42' plasma TV with cable is in the living room, and each bedroom has a smaller TV. Wireless high speed internet service is furnished. The dining room table seats eight easily with extra tables in the living room and the glassed-in porch. A modern well equipped kitchen (spices included) helps make meals and entertaining a breeze. Laundry room offers a washer and dryer on site. A second refrigerator offers extra convenience.

Our Property and THE LAKE!: Outside towards the lake you will find a relaxing 3 person swing, a 25' x 25' brick paved patio area, two BBQ grills, picnic table, portable fire pit and comfortable wrought-iron patio furniture, including 10 chairs and two additional round tables. An American flag flying high overlooks an awesome beach and swimming area. The beach is furnished with additional chairs for sunning. The sandy, rock-free swim area tapers gently from shore to the deeper water. Our private dock runs full length from the patio, across the sand, to the lake, with 80' extending out on the water. Room for docking a boat (up to ~24') or other water toys. This side of the lake usually receives a breeze, so few bugs are ever present. The wind coming through the trees can truly be glorious, and the sunsets are often breathtaking, just like in the movies!

About Richard Peters

Our grandparents built the original cottage on Otsego Lake in 1940. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, swimming and picking blueberries, and introduced vacation lakefront living to our parents and our family as the generations passed. The cottage expanded, adding beds and creature comforts. We retained the great old stone fireplace (now gas) and knotty pine beams throughout the main living areas. Our family now enjoys terrific boating, excellent snowmobiling, great golf and awesome skiing whenever we visit. Gaylord grew up too, and now offers all types of restaurants, shopping, kid’s attractions and a new movie theater, all five miles away or less. Our cottage is in the middle of Gaylord's 'Golf Mecca' for summer fans of the game, and for the winter enthusiasts, we typically receive over 180 inches of snow annually due to our location in the Gaylord 'Snow Belt'.

Richard Peters purchased this cottage in 1980

Guestbook comments from the owner

Owners posting note from Renter:

Thanks Richard/Nancy. We enjoyed ourselves. We have been traveling together for many years. Yours is the kind of facility/atmosphere we look forward to. We enjoyed the guided pontoon ride around your lovely lake and the opportunity to meet part of your family.

Again, many thanks!

Great place for little ones!

  • 5 of 5

We just got home from our stay here and loved it! We stayed with some family and had children ranging in ages from 4-12. This place was perfect for them. My 8 year old was actually in tears when we finally had to leave. They LOVED being all together in the kids room and I loved that there was a bedroom connected to that room so that I could be close by if my littlest ones needed anything. The property is well maintained and the home clean and well stocked. The family room is large, but what's really neat is there's an all season porch connected to it. So when it rained, the adults could sit and talk on the porch while the kids were watching movies in the family room. The dining room table is big. I'd say 8-10 for seating. Plenty of room for Euchre tournaments and Spoons/other card games for the kids! Our favorite thing about this property though, hands down, had to be the beach. There's a nice big sandy area for the kids to play and build sandcastles and the water is shallow enough for the even a very young child to sit and play. It's shallow a pretty long way out too. At the very end of the dock, which is long, is where the water was finally over my older children's heads. Richard and Nancy are great to work with! They communicate promptly and thoroughly and are there if needed during your stay, but really leave you to enjoy your vacation with your family without being intrusive. Any runners out there, take the outside circle and then run down and back past the party store and you'll have a 1 mile loop! It's such a nice peaceful run. We would definitely stay here again!

Owner's Response: Hi Kelly, We appreciate the kind comments! You touched on many of our favorite reasons that make our cottage special for our family. The large "Bunk Room" with separate bath room. The large windowed porch that really lets you "Hear" the rain (and See it coming across Otsego Lake). And the great beach. Nice sand that slowly tapers in the water - great for all ages. Rock and stone free. You are also a great communicator. Base on your email the day you departed, we investigated our roof and found a small seam area that had failed. It will be repaired this week, as our family will arrive tomorrow. Finally, sister Nancy always likes to see the cookie shout out! Hope you consider becoming another repeat customer! Thank, Richard

Great summer getaway

  • 5 of 5

I rented the cottage for a 16-man golf getaway and it was wonderful (a few air mattresses needed :)) The accommodations are great, kitchen has everything you need, and the lakefront is beautiful. Richard was great to deal with - would absolutely recommend this place to anybody.

Owner's Response: Hello Craig, June is a great time for golf around Gaylord! Thanks for your review. We can take 12 in beds, then it's either couches, or air mattresses, as you noted. The latter is usually reserved for our little caddies. Perhaps you will return to the area in the Fall, with the terrific color display, and play a few more rounds. We are also snowmobile friendly ... Glad your stay was enjoyable! Richard

Great place to stay and discuss our golfing adventures.

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is your home away from home. It has everything you need to make your vacation just what it should be, a vacation. We had 8 adults for a golf getaway and this rental was the best place after a long day playing 36 holes to come back to and relax. Plenty of room to gather and discuss our long drives, missed putts and pay off those closet to the pin bets. We enjoyed the great view of the lake and watched the ducks while enjoying our morning coffee. We look forward to coming back again next spring and hopefully make this our lodging for our annual golf trip. Many thanks to Richard for the ease of communication and the cookies upon arrival are fantastic. Thanks again. Mike and the rest of the duffers.

Owner's Response: Hello Mike, Many thanks for your kind review. Glad to know you felt the accommodations were more like a home vs. a simple cottage. We often fill the beds up with several families for snow skiing and boat trips, and most of the major holidays. And (hint) FALL golf is quite spectacular around Gaylord, too. Glad you enjoyed your stay! Richard

Fantastic weekend get away!

  • 5 of 5

We just got back from a great family guys ice fishing weekend. Didn't do so great fishing, but we blame that on odd weather not the anglers. The cottage was perfect. Cozy as can be with plenty of beds. We definitely enjoyed. Richard was very professional to work with. Could not have asked for more. Thank you for sharing your cottage with us.

Owner's Response: Hey Chad, It was nice to meet you last weekend as we snowmobiled by our family cottage. I missed using the fireplace at our cottage, but "guests first" in this situation! Thanks for the nice comments, and hope you consider us for another season down the road! Sincerely, Richard

Cottage with Character....

  • 5 of 5

This isn't your typical rental...it feels like a home away from home. We had 5 adults on a snowmobile trip and had more than enough room....after a long day of riding this was the PERFECT place to come back, grill out and enjoy a few beers by the fireplace. The front living room is a great place to socialize without having to interrupt those that wanted to retire to bed early.....Great communication in advance and everything played out exactly as Richard said it would. We would definitely rent here again. Thank you!

Owner's Response: Hi Chad, Thanks for enjoying our family cottage, and the kind words. Sounds like you found good snow on the trails around Mackinaw, Lewiston, Indian River, and pretty much all around Gaylord. I will have to try the Lewiston Lodge as you recommend. Going north with three buds tomorrow; but gotta rent a motel room, as our cottage is already rented to some ice fishermen this weekend! Think SNOW ... at least until end of March!! Richard

Beautiful Home and Property!

  • 5 of 5

I am finally getting around to writing this review, as this cabin deserves 5 stars. It was a beautiful rustic interior home with a lot more room than the pictures show. The pictures definitely don't do this beautiful home justice! I happened to go by myself and met up with some friends who were up north around the same time and it was great! The lake being right in the backyard was awesome for fishing (although I was there before the dock was extended out farther). I enjoyed every minute of my stay and waking up to see two ducks every morning sitting side by side on the end of the dock was awesome. The property isn't far from downtown Gaylord if anything is needed for food or other supplies. Overall it was an awesome stay and the homemade soft chocolate cookies were AWESOME! I'm not sure who made them but that was a great surprise!! Thank you for allowing me to stay in your home for the weekend! I definitely see another rental in the future. :)

Owner's Response: Hi Kari, Thanks for your kind words about our family cottage! You missed the fully installed dock by about a week! Sister Nancy is the humble but proud cookie chef ... home made for sure! Hope to see you next season, or perhaps this winter? Richard
