We call our Non-Smoking, ground floor villa (#208), 'Retreat' because that is exactly what it is for us - a peaceful place to get away from it all in the beautiful surroundings of Georgia's Jekyll Island. Once a winter hide-away for some of the wealthiest families in the country during the Gilded Age, Jekyll is now a state park offering an unique combination of nature, recreation, and history to her guests. There is something for everyone on Jekyll. We hope you will use the link to our Jekyll Retreat website to learn more about the history of Jekyll and the attractions there for visitors today. There are also many more photos of our villa, Retreat, there for you to view.

We have ceramic tile floors in the living area and bedroom, a step-in shower, and a well-stocked kitchen.

Please note: Linens (bedding and towels) are now included as is maid service after a guest's departure. There is no daily maid service.

To rent Retreat, please drop us an e-mail. This is better than calling due to work schedules. We'll be delighted to answer any questions for you. We must finalize all rentals through Parker Kaufman Realty, located on Jekyll.

If you wish to rent immediately, you can contact Parker Kaufman Realty. They can accept payment by cash, personal check, traveler checks, VISA, MasterCard or Discover. Personal checks will only be accepted at check-in with a valid photo ID (i.e. Driver's License, Military or Government ID).

Retreat is a delightful one bedroom villa located in Villas By the Sea, an oceanside resort on Jekyll's north end. Retreat Villa #208 is located in the Ellington Building, a quiet building just a stone's throw from the Atlantic Ocean. Our building isn't oceanfront but is the first building back and it only takes a minute's walk to get to the beach.

Villa By the Sea's seventeen beautifully landscaped acres provide a tranquil environment for residents and guests. Beach boardwalks lead through the greenery to a sandy beach that stretches on for miles. There is an L-shaped solar heated pool with a splash pool/wading area for children, a restaurant and lounge, garden area with benches and fountain, grills, and a children's playground on-site at Villas By the Sea. A boardwalk by the gazebo is perfect for reading and enjoying the ocean. Washers and dryers are available at select sites throughout the complex as well. The staff at Villas is courteous and ready to help you in any way during your visit. We work through Parker Kaufman Realty, whose staff are ready and willing to help during your stay.

Our villa is decorated in a relaxing nautical style with many lighthouses, shells, ocean collectibles, and prints to make your stay a pleasant one. We bought our villa in 2003 and have redone the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area, adding new furnishings, mattress, dishes, and many other little touches to make Retreat Villa feel like home. We work hard to keep our unit clean and comfy - a home away from home for ourselves and our guests. Linens are included.

The Ellington Building is nestled beneath towering live oaks draped with Spanish moss. With a back patio and expansive sliding glass doors, it's a wonderful place to bird watch. Development on Jekyll is controlled by the state, so there's ample opportunity to enjoy nature and wildlife throughout the island. Bike rentals are available on-site to explore Jekyll's 20 miles of bike paths.

Jekyll Island is a golfer's paradise with 63 holes, and there is also a tennis center and a water park nearby. A fun and 'green' activity on the island is renting a 'Red Bug', cute electric vehicles, to see the island up close. Red Bug rentals are available nearby.

We hope you'll take a look at all Jekyll Island has to offer and take the tour of our Retreat Villa on our website. If you do come to Jekyll, we hope you'll find it a relaxing and enjoyable place to get away from it all. Thanks for your time!

About Jody Butler

I am a retired teacher who led students to Jekyll for 15 years to learn about the barrier island's unique environment. Now I enjoy coming to Jekyll just to relax!

In 2012, I published a book about Jekyll Island. Jekyll Journey: A Family Guide to Georgia's Jewel is perfect for anyone visiting the island, whether for the first time or the forty-first! My second book is Hidden Treasures: Secrets of a Southern Barrier Island. It is perfect for introducing children to the wonders of these special islands. My newest book came out in 2016 and appeals to adults and children. Jekyll Discovery: The Island in ABCs & Poetry uses poetry, prose, and photos to introduce the wonders of this very special Georgia barrier island.

My books feature activities for families to enjoy while on the island or upon returning home. Both books are available around the island at shops and hotels, including the one at Villas By the Sea.

I'm also a musician, teaching guitar and playing at coffee shops, weddings, restaurants, and private events. While on Jekyll, I love to beachcomb, shop, read, write and just relax!

I hope you will discover the magic of Jekyll for yourself while at Retreat, my island home.

Why Jody Butler chose Coastal

I've visited Jekyll Island since I was a child, and it's always been the most special place to me. The island offers a unique combination of natural beauty and fun activities. My dream was to have my own little piece of heaven on Jekyll, so Retreat Villa is truly a dream come true.

Villas by the Sea is a unique property on the island. Surrounded by live oaks, its buildings are sheltered and peaceful. The landscaping is natural and attractive. Driftwood Beach is just a short stroll away, and you can enjoy the view of the St. Simon's Lighthouse on the way. The Villas are wonderful for enjoying Jekyll's wildlife. Deer are frequently seen. Our backdoor visitors have included raccoons, squirrels, possums, and a friendly fox.

Because of the natural erosion and accretion of barrier islands, Jekyll's beaches are are slim to none at high tide. Villas by the Sea features a wonderful boardwalk for reading or surf-watching even when high tide claims the beach. If you're looking for a quiet, beautiful, relaxing locale, Villas by the Sea has it all.

What makes this condo unique

I love to ride my bike around the island. A wonderful ride through the marsh is just around the corner from our villa, and I see something special every time! Sometimes a great blue heron will be waiting for dinner on the banks of a tidal creek. Other times, it's a raccoon family crossing the marsh or a painted bunting flickering across the bike path.

Sitting on the beach or beachcombing is another favorite way to spend an afternoon. Our building is the first back from beachfront, so it's just a short stroll. Driftwood Beach, written up in Southern Living magazine, is right next door, and its unusually shaped trees give the beach an otherworldly appearance. I love to hunt for shark's teeth and sanddollars - never the ones that are alive! The shrimp boats and huge ships coming into Brunswick are always fun to watch, and nothing beats the sound of the ocean for a relaxing time.

Our unit is surrounded by beautiful live oak trees - the state tree of Georgia. We enjoy feeding the squirrels that play in the branches and in summer, it's so refreshing to return to the shade after hours in the sun at the beach. I love to take a good book out onto the patio and just relax under those gorgeous trees.

Visiting the historic district is another favorite way to spend a day. Tours of the Millionaire's mansions are available, and it's a wonderful place to bike or walk. Nestled under gorgeous oaks on the river side of the island, the shops are located in historic buildings once housing servants and support staff for the Gilded Age millionaires who once called Jekyll Island home. The Georgia Sea Turtle Center is a fascinating stop, and Tidelands Nature Center isn't far away. Wonderful places to learn about the natural beauty that makes Jekyll Island so unique.

Great place to relax and enjoy the island

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at "Retreat" was very relaxing. Everything that we needed was provided. The condo and the Villas community was very clean, very quiet. Close walk to Driftwood Beach, which is wonderful. Nice biking trails. Would recommend this condo to anyone. Nice children's play area and pool. We are already planning a return visit. Loved it.

Relaxing stay!

  • 5 of 5

Just got home from a great time on Jekyll Island. Wife and I celebrated our 36th anniversary there, staying in the very comfortable and "homey feeling" area. This is a great place. Everything was ready for our arrival, from the folks at Jekyll Realty to the bedroom light being on to welcome us. The entire place was clean and it DID feel like home. The couch and recliners helped it feel that way. In a hotel room you generally get to watch TV from the bed, propped up with all available pillows. -- One small suggestion -- a paper listing of TV channels for those of us who are remote control challenged would be nice, HA. The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was really nice, especially the shower. The location was exactly as described - play area for kids right out the back door, pool not much farther and the beach less than a 5 minute walk (we walk slow). Enjoyed the beach at low tide and the breeze kept the bugs at bay for the most part. Saw plenty of deer on the golf course and a couple of racoons crossing the parking lot one evening. Rented bicycles and rode around the historic district. We hadn't been on bike's since we were kids and the half day rental was PLENTY as our 'backsides' couldn't have handled any more. Had lunch one day at Fins and dinners at SeaJays, Driftwood Bistro and the SandBar & Grill. No regrets at any of those locations, good food and very very good service. All in all EVERYONE we came in contact with on the Island was extremely nice and helpful and made you feel like they appreciated you being there! That includes the guy selling fudge next to Jekyll Realty and a gentleman who stopped his bike ride to see if we needed any help or directions as we had stopped our bike ride to take a drink of water and watch a couple of golfers tee off. Must be my grey beard and white hair. In summary - If you are reading this - a stay at the Villas on Jekyll Island should be peaceful and relaxing. Ours was.

Car: necessary

Restaurant on-site, Garden Area with Fountain, Water Park nearby, Tidelands Nature Center close-by, Georgia Turtle Center close-by, Children's Play Park with Pirate Ship for climbing and play located directly behind our unit. Mini golf is close-by as are Jekyll's golf courses. Near the Soccer and Tennis Complexes. Fishing pier and historic area close-by.

Jekyll is a wonderful balance of development and nature. Don't leave the island without visiting the Georgia Turtle Center and Tidelands Nature Center. Maybe a kayak excursion in the Marshes of Glynn? The island's history is intriguing. During the Gilded Age, the nation's richest families gathered on this small island for their winter getaway. Be sure to take one of the tours of the historic district.
