TYPICAL KEYS RENTAL-EXPECTATION MET

  • 4 of 5

Heading for our long weekend away we were a little nervous considering the serious drop in positive reviews. We have stayed in the keys many times. This trip was two couples(early 50's) enjoying a long holiday weekend. Dividing the cost between the two couples meant we paid less than a hotel room and had the plus of a full kitchen and laundry facilities and room to spread out. The a/c was plenty cold. The hot water was plenty hot. The cable tv was fine. The beds were comfy. We didn't encounter any issues with the house at all. The house was cleaned when we arrived, in fact the cleaners came back and asked if we wanted them to fold the laundry they had left in the dryer. Yes the house needs a deep cleaning like the berber carpeting is deeply stained. However, we go to the keys with kayaks in tow and after a day on the water, we come dragging into a house with sand and muck and wet, so we wouldn't like to stay in a place that we felt like we had to be totally tidy in. We also were able to bring our dog along, another plus. We couldn't have sat outside in July as we would have just been eaten alive by the mosquitos, but we were able to use the grill one night and it was fine. The dock is showing signs of aging, but the hole is intentionally part of the dock, to allow for mangroves growing there. We never felt unsafe walking on it. Yes the boat is old, but we weren't bothered by it. We go to the Keys to mostly kick back, relax, kayak, and fish. I can see how if you were going to stay at the house as a major part of your time there, that you could be disappointed, but clean and functional works fine for us as long as we aren't paying a premium price. The salt air is so hard on property in the keys, to keep a place in top shape requires expensive regular maintenance that probably would eat up most profit. So, I'm sure it's a balancing act for an owner to figure out what to invest in and what to let go. Also we did receive our security deposit back in the time stated. Would we stay there again? Yep.

Disappointing

  • 1 of 5

I was very disappointed in this property.

When we first arrived at the property, I was worried that it was a SCAM. The outside of the property has not been touched in so long it looks loozed abandoned. The inside was not the greatest, it could use a deep cleaning which has not been done in a while. There is a Hugh boat on the dock that has not seen water in over 5 years and eventually the dock is going to give away. The first day we got the I just about fell through a big opening on the dock, I wold have been seriously hurt. It really sad because the could be a great vacation home.

The owner is very eager to return emails and answer, until it's time for him to return your deposit . It is now almost July an I can not get a response. I was even kind enough to let him know what shape his property was in and sent pictures, but apparently he already knows and just doesn't seem to care. All this man is worried about is the money and not returning your deposit. I am now going further with this action because apparently this is not the first time, so Mr Paul if this is the way you want to treat your guests so be it. But just know I will be filing paperwork. BBB,HOME AWAY and a few others.

Loved Key Largo, but house needed work.

  • 2 of 5

We enjoyed our stay on the canal in Key Largo, however, the house was a bit disappointing. When we arrived the house was a mess and not cleaned from the previous guests. We had to wash linens and clean floors, cabinets ect. before we could even unpack. The owner Paul said it was his fault he had not hired anyone to clean and said he would monetarily make it right. However, I still have not received my deposit refund which he said he mailed over a month ago, and now is not acknowledging my emails. The bed in the master bedroom is comfortable even though it is being held up by phone books. The drain for the shower in the master bath is so slow that the shower floor filled up with water, so we only used the shower in the tub. The second bath the electrical plug didn't work so when our daughter came to stay she was using the master bath for hair dryer etc, a bit of an inconvenience. The grill that was available for us was so rusted that the burners were laying in the bottom of the grill...for safety reasons we went to K-Mart and purchased a small grill to use. The plastic furniture that you see pictured on the outside deck is being held together with duck tape...again for safety reasons we purchased chairs to use. There were times we would like to have opened the windows rather than use the air, but the screens all had huge holes in them, and the sliding doors were either off their tracks or broken because they wouldn't open. We ate out most of the time...the pots and pans were not in the best shape, and the burners on the stove looked like some one had beat them with a hammer. The lights in the laundry room and kitchen did not work, so when you did laundry we had to bring a light in from one of the bedrooms. The washer and dryer were new and worked very well. The dock that is pictured is in need of work and there is a 28 foot boat sitting right where you would want to sit on the dock. The boat has not been in the water since 2011 and looks like it has never had a cover on it, it is a mess. This inside of the boat is the view from your master bedroom. The other end of the dock has a 10 foot hole cut out of it, I am not sure why. To get onto the dock you have to either snake your way through the bushes or duck under the boat. We were lucky to see manatee swimming in the canal the day before we left, so you do see things in the water.

Wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week this summer and had a wonderful time. Property was close to restaurants and many activities. We took our boat out to Pennekamp for snorkeling, to restaurants, out to watch the sunset on the bay, and for a day out on the water. We saw manatees, dolphins, herons, iguanas, and many other types of wildlife. We had a paddleboard delivered and took it to a beach and hung out close to a beach for the day. We barbecued, played games, and had quality family time. The home was comfortable and the owner was responsive to our needs. We would definitely like to return.

Great location, perfect home base for boaters on the go

  • 5 of 5

The place was simple and clean, and in an excellent location to get to a variety of activities by both boat and car. Nice setup for my group of friends to each have their own space in the house, and be able to easily hop on the boat and head out to go tubing, to restaurants, snorkeling, and more.

If you're looking for a luxury resort type of vacation then you should look at a luxury resort, but if you're just looking for a great value in a central area with all the essentials, then this home is perfect. I would stay here again without a doubt.

Great location, excellent value!

  • 5 of 5

This rental is in a great central location for visiting the Florida Keys. We were able to make day trips to the Everglades and Key West with no problems. It's a quiet location with plenty of room for the family to stretch out. It's actually much better than the pictures show. I would highly recommend this rental for families or couples wanting to share a vacation home. The owner will send an email with recommended excursions. We went to Hobo's with fish we caught offshore and it was $100 for six gourmet dinners!
