Lovely country home

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely family gathering in this beautiful old house. There was plenty of room for our extended family, with wonderful and varied spaces ; we could gather around the long dining table for meals , or find all kinds of nooks and crannies for separate moments. The house is beautifully restored and decorated, the bathrooms new and clean, the beds comfy, the surroundings beautiful. We all hope to be able to return for our future gatherings

Wonderful New Years Eve getaway

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I wanted to find a peaceful upstate getaway for our New Years Eve and after celebration and Idle Hour Farm did not disappoint! Susan was super communicative and responsive and we felt comfortable arranging the stay. We were 8 adults and had two more for dinner and the house felt spacious enough to fit more. The pictures make it look kind of massive (and it is large), but it's actually incredibly cozy with loads of nooks and crannies and different rooms (living, sitting, bedrooms, kitchens) to suit a number of people doing different things. We holed up, cooking in the fabulous downstairs kitchen and playing games in front of the fire - it was wonderful!! The bedrooms are pretty great as well, though I did get the master suite with the king size bed:) The property is quite beautiful and so much to explore, even in the freezing winter. We can't wait to return to to the farm - what a wonderful, special retreat. Highly recommend!

Beautiful home, painful experience

  • 1 of 5

My family and I stayed at the farm over Christmas. As others have said, the farm is truly beautiful. Original, authentic, lots of space, great grounds, phenomenal views. Truly a magical place. The kitchen is quite sparsely equipped, especially for a larger group, but it has all of the basics you need. We had such an amazing time as a big family group, that we decided to stay at the farm for a longer period of time through into the Spring. At first what was a great a much needed escape from the city sadly became a real nightmare. Without going into the details (as there's a lot and it's all pretty painful reading), the owner Susan has never paid us back our security deposit. Whilst I understand that running such a large property is not at all easy, we were nothing but good and thoughtful tenants (we looked after the place like it was our own through a really tough winter, cleaned up after storms, paid all the bills, regularly had the driveway plowed, and much more). After waiting patiently for over four months for it to be returned I've sadly had to start legal proceedings to recover whats owed. It doesn't sound like anyone else has had this problem, so it may be a one-off. But for myself and my family this has been a very painful process.

An incredible fall getaway with close friends and our labrador

  • 5 of 5

Our weekend getaway to Idle Hour Farm exceeded all expectations. In fact, I would say it was the best weekend of my life. A group of 10 of us New York City dwellers packed our bags for what inevitably became a relaxing, rejuvenating, and inexplicably delightful stay. The pictures are lovely, but hardly do the place justice. It's hard to capture that end-of-summer / beginning-of-fall magic. The leaves were turning colors and beginning to fall, and the way the sunlight hit the lake and the illuminated the golden colors of the leaves in the backyard was just stunning. Our labrador had his first swim in the lake / pond out back, and was so happy to have so much freedom to run around and play fetch and to nap in the sun. We really lucked out with 80 degree weather, and some of the group went swimming and took the little paddleboat out onto the water. At night, we used the propane grill to make a feast of grilled vegetables, burgers, hot dogs, and the works. The little beach near the water became the perfect place to gather around the bonfire pit, roasting s'mores (it was a first for the Australian and Swede who were with us) and listening to my boyfriend play the guitar by the campfire. Two from our group went on a nearby scenic hike that Susan had recommended, to the Fire Tower. We had planned to go to the nearby vineyard for a wine tasting and to the orchard for apple picking but we just couldn't pull ourselves away from the house. It was everything we needed and more. There was plenty of space for the 10 of us, with big, comfortable rooms, an open office that perfectly fit an air mattress, and two huge, comfy couches down in the basement. The basement area became our hangout spot for the first night, where there was also a nice, well-equipped kitchen with all the amenities you could need, and a great dining room table. We listened to music and relaxed downstairs for the night. The next evening, we played Scrabble out on the expansive deck and continued to relax out there through dinnertime; the table fit our entire feast (cupcakes and wine and all) and was just wonderful. Everyone had an absolutely amazing time. It was certainly a weekend we'll all remember for years to come. Thank you Susan, for sharing your beautiful home with us for the weekend.

Lyme disease ridden lawn

  • 1 of 5

It is hard to write this review, because during our stay, we enjoyed being there. There was lots of space to spread out, the house was clean and the lawn was beautiful. However, on our second day there, we discovered ticks on 2 of the kids, one of which tested positive for Lyme disease and now a month later, one of the adults in our party tested positive. After staying at many homes over the past several years, this was our first encounter with ticks, let alone sick ones. Please be aware and make sure you check yourself at the end of each day.

Less serious, but annoying, there was a nest of wasps right near the patio and the hot water didn't work, but was promptly addressed by the owner.

Owner's Response: All guests should be aware - if you vacation in the country and go outdoors, there are bugs, flying bugs, all kinds of creepy crawlies and even 4 legged creatures both big and small that you may encounter. If you have a weak constitution for these things - don't go outdoors, stay inside. As an aside - I have lived on the farm for 5 years, as have my 2 grown children, none of us has EVER gotten Lymes, ticks yes, but never Lymes. Not saying it doesn't happen, it does, part of the risk of going outdoors anywhere. And by the way - these guests were at the farm for 2 nights, that's it. Ridiculous.

Amazing Fall Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Planning an outing with a big a group always presents an ordeal, due to the different opinions but Susan was so nice and patient to accommodate us. The house was amazing and spacious. We all felt comfortable and had so much fun. The house looks nice in pictures but once you are there, you can appreciate the real beauty of the place. It was clean and well-maintained. Before we arrived, Susan told us about a couple of nice places to visit and shared with us a listing of restaurants and activities. For example, the Millbrook vineyard which is nearby was really fun (Lookout in LivingSocial or Groupon for discounts). The sprout creek farm was also really nice and informative. Couldn't ask for a more patient person to work with than Susan. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone that needs to get away from the city. Just note that there is one bedroom that has no bed, please bring an airbed if you are planning to use it. Enjoy the lake. Don't expect too many fish.
