About Samadhi Butterfly

Originally from Michigan, I have been blessed to be a Hana, Maui resident since 1982. I run our B&B with my daughter. Together we have created this special place for our guests to enjoy and we keep busy making sure our 4-acre parcel is beautiful and manicured.

We were fortunate to have found this lush and peaceful spot on the Island of Maui. After my husband passed, my daughter and I needed a way to make a living, so we took advantage of having a space to renovate into a Bed and Breakfast, as this allowed Mercury (my daughter) and myself to stay at home, run a business and have a connection with wonderful folks from all over the world. This has worked out better than we could even imagined!

Samadhi Butterfly purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Samadhi Butterfly chose Hana

We are 100% green (completely solar powered) and offer our guests the chance to enjoy the lifestyle and and views that one would expect of a tropical paradise. Although we are always happy to answer questions and can offer plenty of advice on any Hana activities or sightseeing spots, we ultimately respect the privacy of our guests and believe in making sure you have a peaceful and romantic stay while you are here. We are around when you need us… and respectful when you want to be alone.

What makes this cottage unique

We have the luxury of privacy, peace and quiet in our setting. Mercury and I enjoy staying on our blessed piece of paradise and working in nature to make things beautiful. We enjoy donating to the homeless with our abundant fruit from our trees. We get most of our social connections with the wonderful folks that visit our B&B. We enjoy being totally 'green' and helping provide true eco-friendly accommodations but with the creature-comforts one would expect of a wonderful place to vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Mother-Daughter team do a great job at hospitality in their

"Piece of Paradise". We enjoyed two of our dinners on the lanai

watching the sunset. One dinner we ate off of the bamboo tray on our

bed because of the rainfall. As the evenings progressed, we would sit

at the table and read, eat tropical fruit from the property then

crawl into the king size bed and watch the geckos crawl up the

outside of the windows. The croaking frogs and light rainfall lulled

us to sleep several nights.

We enjoyed coconut milk, mangoes and bananas from the beautifully

manicured grounds (a former banana plantation).

Once we were greeted and shown around, we were given complete

privacy, unless we sought them out with a question. I bought a nice

costume jewelry necklace from Mercury's collection of handmade

jewelry. We appreciated all of the plumerias and other exotic flowers

used to decorate our room.

We would recommend Ala Aina Ocean Vista, especially for honeymooners;

lots of privacy and beautiful scenery. The only sounds we heard were

the mooing of nearby cows occasionally, birds trilling, the wind in

the mango trees and the frogs at night. Ahhhhh, lovely!

This is the exact opposite of Kaanapali's hustle and bustle. it's

remote, quiet & relaxing. If you want to rejuvenate and enjoy nature,

this is the place to stay!

Amazing stay in Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

We had been looking forward to staying on Sam and Mercury's property since the day we booked it. Not even kidding...we probably looked at the VRBO photos at least 30 times before arriving. Seeing the property in person was absolutely amazing! We LOVED IT! So peaceful and private. Very comfortable bed and an AMAZING shower with views of the sprawling yard and ocean. My favorite part of the stay was making pour over coffee and cooking eggs on the cast iron skillet in the morning, and eating out on our private deck. They provided us with eggs, butter, "everything" bagles, juice, and we picked a few fallen mangoes from under the trees in the yard. We also enjoyed coming back to the property after a day of adventuring and having a glass of wine while watching the back side of the sunset. You can see the Big Island on a very clear day- so cool!! If you're luck y you might spot the neighbor horses out by the mango tree- so cool! Also, we really enjoyed the beautiful gardens and landscaping.

I love how Sam and Mercury paid close attention to little details- a good selection of books, beach towels, chocolate by the bedside, shampoo and conditioner in the shower, beautiful flowers from their yard decorating the bathroom, etc.

Sam and Mercury were always available for advice/to chat, but gave us complete privacy otherwise.

Note: the unit does not have AC, which is totally fine because all of the windows open and there is great airflow through the space.

Some not to be missed activities nearby: food trucks in Hana (Thai one is FANTASTIC), Venus Pools- cliff jumping and swimming, Bamboo hike and pools @ Haleakala NP, fruit stands along the road, RED SAND BEACH in Hana- SO COOL, black sand beach and costal hike- also super cool! We would love to come back!

Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

Sam welcomed us the minute my husband and I arrived and spent time giving us the tour and making sure we felt at home. We found some of the most relaxing parts were sitting on the deck both at night and for morning breakfast and enjoying the beautiful ocean views from a distance. Sam and Mercury's home is also close to famous hikes in Hana and the Seven Sacred Pools. Overall a wonderful experience! Thank you for your hospitality and kindness. Mahalo!

Unbelievable, Peaceful, Once in a lifetime property

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I recently stayed 2 nights on this amazing property. We were in awe of the views and the tranquility of the land. At sunset we were able to see quite clearly the observatories on top of the Massive 13,000+ ft tall Mauna Kea just across the channel from us. We sat on the private back porch for hours reading, soaking up the sun, enjoying the beautiful gardens, and cooking our meals in the outdoor kitchen. The property is a perfect launching point for 7 sacred pools and many other beaches and waterfall hikes. We were surprised by a visit from some neighboring horses which totally made our day! At night we were serenaded to sleep by the amazing animal sounds and frequent Hana rain storms. It was the most peaceful night of sleep I've had in a long, long time. Stop looking around and just book your stay at this amazing and unique property. Thank you Sam and Mercury for being wonderful hosts! We will absolutely stay here again.

Everything about this property was amazing.

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I loved our two night stay. Heavenly is the only word I can use to describe this property. You must see it to believe it. Sam and Mercury are so nice and helpful. We were blown away by the landscaping, ocean vistas and tropical environment. We had a really peaceful relaxing stay and would request to stay here again in the future. Really enjoyed the shower with ocean view, cooking omlettes for breakfast on the private deck and grilling in the evenings. Only regret is we could not stay longer. We would definitely recommend to any couple visiting Maui. Unbelievable experience!

Magical Place!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I really enjoyed our 2 night stay here. Sam's place is so peaceful we just wanted to sit on the deck and stare out onto the ocean and beautiful grounds all day! We decided to explore Hana so Sam gave us great recommendations and instructions on some amazing hikes and waterfalls. Do take your time and stay for at least 2 nights...Hana is full of beauty and wonder and we could have stayed much longer. Sam is a great host and stocked our fridge with breakfast items for cooking in the outdoor kitchen! Thank you for everything Sam, We had a perfect time at your beautiful home! We will be back again!

A little piece of heaven

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. It was very private and the views have to be seen to be appreciated. We loved the shower, it felt like you were showering outside. We made good use of the outdoor kitchen and was able to get some fresh fish off a local fisherman. We would definitely stay again.
