I run a small software company called Apollo Matrix in DC and raise 3 kids with my wife Sienna. I am a design hack who appreciates good design in things natural and man-made. And I enjoy pretty much all mountain sports.
Pete Johnson purchased this house in 2001
Canaan Valley is a pristine alpine setting with exciting weather, wildlife, mountain streams, conifers, rocky landscapes, a clear sky and all the mountain sports I love. Canaan reminds me of the West. And it's only 3 hours from DC.
This is one of the most valuable lots in Timberline for good reason. And according to more than a few, the coolest house in the Valley... Large indoor common spaces with epic views of mountains, lakes, meadow and wildlife. This is Canaan Valley experienced to the fullest. Great family hiking from the house -- much of it within view of the house. Skiing, Dolly Sods Wilderness and much more within minutes.
I recommend staying at this property to anyone that is coming to the Canaan Valley area with a large group. My family and I had a wonderful time! The house has everything you can possibly ask for and Pete, the owner, is very helpful and quick to respond.
This property deserves 5 stars and has set the bar high for all future trips. I can't recommend this place enough!
This was our second trip to the house. Very clean and well maintained. Large enough for everyone to be comfortable. Great views and perfect location to everything in the area. You won't retreat staying here. Owner is very nice and easy to contact. Bed rooms are large with great beds. Bathrooms are clean and very spa like. Great place to stay in Timberline!
I think this is the best vacation rental place we visited. The place is beautiful, very well kept, maintained, with breathtaking mountain views. There is a lake at the end of the back of the property, between the house and the mountains. There are huge glass windows in the living room where you can enjoy the mountain views. In the morning it will be difficult as the sun hits your face through the windows, but is a great setting for the afternoon/evening. The kitchen is equipped with pretty much what you need for your cooking. Sound system throughout the house is perfect, you can simply hook up your phone to it, and you can listen to the music from the kitchen, living room....etc. You can control the volume in each zone. The house is located toward one end of the lake. I would highly recommend, weather permits, you walk to the other end along the lake. Probably a canoe or kayak ride would be great, but we didn't have the time for that. Also, you will see a lot of deer in the area. The closet town is Davis, but you will see a couple of restaurants way before that. Sirianni's Cafe (that is in a few miles drive) gave us great Pizza. There is another Sirianni's Cafe in Davis too, if you want to drive that far (about 15 miles).
The house was luxurious to say the least, from the high end appliances to the interesting art work throughout. Comfortable couches for lounging, big open spaces in the main areas and a modern well equipped kitchen. The outdoor fireplace was a nice addition, especially when viewed from the hot tub. Nothing is missing from this property.
Speaking of views, the valley is expansive and fairly often beautiful mists and clouds would fill it. The location in the valley is tough to beat. Literally 3 minutes from Timblerline, White Grass and Canaan Valley Park.
We won't go anywhere else in the valley.
A very beautiful home in a peaceful and relaxing area. We loved the hot tub and outdoor fireplace. We will rent this home again.
The mountain views are spectacular, the house is a work of art, the cloud mist is seductive, the hiking trails are memorable, the hot tub is relaxing, the music system is superb, the owner is friendly...I could go on and on. It's all good! I look forward to a visit in the future!
Golf: Nearby Canaan Valley State Park.
Ski: Timberline Ski area is about 1 mile from the property, just outside the gated entrance to Old Timberline. Canaan Valley Ski area is another 5 minutes down WV32. White Grass Ski Touring Center is about 10 minutes down WV32. Yours is an ideal location for being out of the main stream but within minutes of all three ski areas. Ski them all!
