About Pete Johnson

I run a small software company called Apollo Matrix in DC and raise 3 kids with my wife. I am a design hack who appreciates good design in things natural and man-made. And I enjoy pretty much all mountain sports.

Pete Johnson purchased this house in 2001

Why Pete Johnson chose West Virginia

Canaan Valley is a pristine alpine setting with exciting weather, wildlife, mountain streams, conifers, rocky landscapes, a clear sky and all the mountain sports I love. Canaan reminds me of the West. And with a new highway to Davis WV, it's only 3 hours from DC . I'll estimate that 25% of our guests in 2016 were repeat guests and that percentage is growing.

What makes this house unique

This is one of the most valuable lots in Timberline for good reason. And according to more than a few, the coolest house in the Valley... Large indoor common spaces with epic views of mountains, lakes, meadow and wildlife. This is Canaan Valley experienced to the fullest. Great family hiking right from the back door -- much of it within view of the house. From the house you have a 180 degree view of safe terrain for the kids to play out back. Skiing, Dolly Sods Wilderness, fishing, canoeing and much more within minutes.

The property was all we could have asked for.

  • 5 of 5

The stay and facility was all we could have wanted. Only glitch was the Timberline Community that coated the access road with a tar-like substance that stunk like garbage and made a mess of the car. I would much have preferred the dust covering to this substance that does not come off in a car wash. Dust will wash off.

Owner's Response: Hi David, thanks for pointing out the road issue in Timberline. I inquired and found that the HoA had been applying Soy Oil to the gravel roads the past few weeks. It is used to compact the gravel and minimize dust. I asked about staining and was told that hot soapy water should remove the oil stains. The HoA office manager said they have now started advising visitors as they enter the subdivision to drive slower than usual in order to minimize. Sorry this occurred during your visit.

Wonderful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This place is absolutely gorgeous. If you're going to stay in West Virginia, this is the place you want to stay at. Great for a peaceful retreat, but not too secluded. Nearby there are a variety of things to do/see such as Blackwater falls, various trails, and great restaurants. Smoke Hole caverns, Seneca Rocks, and much more isn't too far away either if you're looking for a day out and a nice car ride. Pete is extremely helpful and nice as well. My standards for cabin rentals have been greatly raised! Again do not hesitate to rent this beautiful cabin, it is worth every won't regret it.

This home was so beautiful. It is not an ordinary mountain cabin. The attention to detail is amazing. We loved this home. We enjoyed Kayaking on the little lake behind the home. My kids also loved the hammock. They was a bald eagle in a tree behind the home that we watch throughout our visit. I think this would be a perfect home to stay in during the winter if you ski. Also, the owner was great and mailed us clothing that was left at the property.

Gorgeous property, highly recommend!

  • 5 of 5

I recommend staying at this property to anyone that is coming to the Canaan Valley area with a large group. My family and I had a wonderful time! The house has everything you can possibly ask for and Pete, the owner, is very helpful and quick to respond.

This property deserves 5 stars and has set the bar high for all future trips. I can't recommend this place enough!

Definitely a house you want to stay at!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to the house. Very clean and well maintained. Large enough for everyone to be comfortable. Great views and perfect location to everything in the area. You won't retreat staying here. Owner is very nice and easy to contact. Bed rooms are large with great beds. Bathrooms are clean and very spa like. Great place to stay in Timberline!

I think this is the best vacation rental place we visited

  • 5 of 5

I think this is the best vacation rental place we visited. The place is beautiful, very well kept, maintained, with breathtaking mountain views. There is a lake at the end of the back of the property, between the house and the mountains. There are huge glass windows in the living room where you can enjoy the mountain views. In the morning it will be difficult as the sun hits your face through the windows, but is a great setting for the afternoon/evening. The kitchen is equipped with pretty much what you need for your cooking. Sound system throughout the house is perfect, you can simply hook up your phone to it, and you can listen to the music from the kitchen, living room....etc. You can control the volume in each zone. The house is located toward one end of the lake. I would highly recommend, weather permits, you walk to the other end along the lake. Probably a canoe or kayak ride would be great, but we didn't have the time for that. Also, you will see a lot of deer in the area. The closet town is Davis, but you will see a couple of restaurants way before that. Sirianni's Cafe (that is in a few miles drive) gave us great Pizza. There is another Sirianni's Cafe in Davis too, if you want to drive that far (about 15 miles).
