3 bedroom, 2 story villa, 2 Baths, (Sleeps up to 8).
- english, spanish
The magical, privately owned property is rented out to Luz de Alba (Light of Dawn). It is Costa Rican company who employ local help, including fabulous chefs from the area who cook mouth watering tropical delicateness customized personally for you alone. They are involved in various local projects to help protect and promote the Rain Forest.
Edgar purchased this Villa in 2005
Why Edgar chose El Cerro
It is the closest places to Paradise. Only a few hours flight from US. Out of the hurricane zone. English is widely spoken. The property is conveniently located within a half hour of town, the Park, the beaches, and the airport. CR is only 9 degrees from the equator. The property is normally 10 cooler than in town, so most couples find it really refreshing at the end of a hot day. Heat and humidity can sometimes range in the 90's down below.
What makes this Villa unique
Your own private rainforest - like having a National Park without the tourists. One of the most varied collections of tropical flowers as you will see in one place. Your absolute privacy is guaranteed.
Please consider the following guidelines when booking this property:

Real Costa Rica
We just returned from the Light of Dawn property. Please indulge me as I try to give an accurate description our visit. My wife and I opted for an “all inclusive” stay, so some of what I write will include that aspect.
First of all, if you are the type of person that loves to be in a resort at the beach, surrounded by lots of people, then this place is NOT for you.
We decided to stay here because it was remotely located AND because of their “all inclusive” option. We wanted to experience Pura Vida to the fullest. We read books, did a puzzle(left that for future guests) and just relaxed. Our price was adjusted based on our needs, so know that Deborah and Pete will work with you and your budget.
We had them arrange airport transportation and Pete met us in town to take us to the property the 1st day. The house is nestled in the middle of the forest and there is no one even close by. The owners personal house is up the road and even with the exploring we did, we never saw it.
For 7 nights a pair of local women came and cooked us amazing meals. Between that and the food that was stocked for us, we had enough food to feed 4 people. I finally told them to quit bringing food! They even bought us snacks on trips down the mountain.
Pete gave us a tour of the property and we were so amazed at the work that he continually does to make it a natural habit. As a former corporate computer specialist, he has really learned about “the land” and is doing his part to promote nature in his little corner of Costa Rica.
One room is air conditioned and I would go in there for a nap in the afternoon. At night, with an oscillating fan, our bedroom was comfortable and even chilly in the morning.
We were there in the “dry”season, in the middle of a bad drought. It never rained the whole week we were there. Because of that, we weren’t able to experience their private waterfall, but hiked up the still large enough river, swam and jumped off rocks into pools.
We can’t express enough how much we enjoyed our stay. As I stated in the beginning, this is not a resort, so don’t expect that. What you can expect is a pure jungle experience with most of the comforts of home.
We are already telling our friends about Light of Dawn and hope that some of them will make the trip.
Thank you Deborah and Pete for a wonderful experience! We hope to see you again!
Perfect retreat in the forest
We loved our stay at Edgar's place. Edgar and Deborah are very kind and caring. We arrived at night and they were waiting for us just outside of the town, making sure we got everything before driving in the mountains to the house. They also gave us eggs and fruits for our breakfast.
The house is really great, especially in the day when you open all the doors, you feel like being outside. The big screened terrace around the house is great to hang out for morning coffee. Don't hesitate to take Edgar's tour around his property, you will learn a lot of things about the plants and the forest on his property. This tour is ending at the waterfall where you can take a swim in the pool at the bottom and lay down in the sun on the big rocks on the river side. If you have time don't hesitate to plan another morning to enjoy this private waterfall, you won't regret it.
It is a bit far from town and you probably won't want to drive up there at night. But even with that it is a really great location for vacation.
Exactly what we were looking for. In the middle of the jungle and away from reality
We absolutely loved our stay! The best part was all of the help back and forth from Deborah allowing us to book a lot of activities in a short amount of time. With plenty of time in the evenings to relax with the family and enjoy the sounds of the jungle. BecAuse so many of the tour companies know the owners, we were able to make things happen in the off seAson that would have not been possible had I booked directly with tour companies. Even with all of the organizing they had to do for us to set up, they don’t even take a cut of the activities. They just do it for you and you pay the tour companies directly. We all thoroughly enjoyed the property. From my 70 year old parents to our 18 and 20 year olds and our 9 year old. Would come back again and again’
Remote but beautiful!
If you are looking for a digital detox and a place to truly escape this is the home for you! This large home is nestled in the rainforest and is surrounded by fantastic plants, trees and flowers. You’ll be serenaded all day and night long by birds and insects. Happily the insects stay outside! The large wrap around veranda provides a welcome spot to relax after a day of touring. Because the rainforest is literally surrounding the house it is damp and very humid. We visited in August and the early evening/nighttime rains meant nothing ever really dried out. A benefit is that it is much cooler than along the ocean.
Due to the remote location it takes a long drive up a dirt and rock narrow road. Four wheel drive is a must! You are very far from the hustle and bustle of Quepos and Manuel Antonio. This is the perfect location to relax and commune with nature, however it may not appeal to those looking for more excitement and reliable wifi.
Pete and Deborah were gracious hosts. Pete gave us an enjoyable and educational tour of his property and showed us where the private waterfall and swimming hole is (totally recommend this!!) His passion for the area is inspiring! Deborah delivered farm fresh eggs and fruit and herbs from the property. Lovely!
Rio Naranjo house
Beautiful Property, friendly host
The two of you were both delightful. Really nice to meet you, and can't wait to have you back!
A private tropical paradise
Our family of four (including an 18 and 13 year old) had a wonderful stay at this hidden gem. We were looking for privacy and tranquility, and this property did not disappoint. We so enjoyed our coffee on the balcony in the morning overlooking this tropical paradise while listening to the roaring Rio Naranjo which courses through the property a distance below the house. The owners, Pete and Deb, are truly gracious hosts; at my request, Deb even arranged for a local bakery to bake a traditional Costa Rican cake for my husband’s 50th birthday, which happened to coincide with the day of our arrival. Pete’s tour of the extensive property the morning after we arrived was absolutely fascinating, and we learned so much from him. He is a wealth of knowledge and enthusiastically shared with us his passion for cultivating and beautifying his property with native trees, flowers, and edible plants. In addition to Pete’s tour, we spent one morning wandering the trails ourselves and found several paths that led down to the river, as well as an old transport pulley system for crossing the river. (No, we did not brave crossing this way, although my husband was tempted!) Though Pete informed us that the river is calm enough for swimming during the dry season, its power and ferocity during our stay prohibited any frolicking. Before our stay, I had arranged with Deb to have two local chefs, Cleo and Clara, prepare our dinners each night. I would wholeheartedly recommend them. The meals included freshly prepared tropical juices, appetizers, sumptuous entrées, and incredible desserts. These dinners were truly a highlight of the trip, and the ladies who prepared them were humble, gracious, and kind. All in all, our stay here was an incredible experience which I would highly recommend!
How very kind of you to write such a detailed review. You have an absolutely lovely family, and we enjoyed meeting you all. Your trip really did come together perfectly, and we are so glad.
We like to work together with our guests ahead of time to help them plan the perfect trip for their needs. Planning international trips is involved and oftentimes confusing. So we like to assist as much as possible so our guests can just arrive, relax, and enjoy each other's company.
Please come back any time.
All the best from your friends in the forest at Light of Dawn!
