Villa Solo Bueno means 'All is Well' and you will see why when you visit our little slice of heaven. Located on the side of a jungle-covered mountain almost every room in our villa has a fabulous view of the Pacific. Immediately adjacent to a green belt on the top tier of the Canto del Mar (Song of the Sea) gated community, it is safe, secure, and rich with wildlife.
Overwhelm your senses. Turn off the a.c. and open the windows and doors. Hear the call of the toucans and howler monkeys. Fall asleep to the sounds of the dink frogs and the waves lapping the shore below. Smell the fragrant aroma of the Ylang Ylang tree, inspiration for Chanel No. 5 perfume. Take a cool dip in your private plunge pool. Have some fun trying to spot our resident three-toed tree sloth, white-faced monkeys or toucans in the trees above – all commonly seen from the patio of our villa.
Area Activities: You will be amazed at the variety of adventure so close at hand. Horse back riding to secluded water falls with breakfast and lunch included; hiking, nature photography; pristine white water rafting on class III and IV rapids where you won't see anyone else all day, includes breakfast and lunch; zip lining through the jungle; ocean kayaking; exploring sea caves; snorkeling; scuba diving; and of course salt water fishing.
If you are a surfer, or wish to try it, we can connect you with surf instructors. The surf at Playa Dominical (4 km north) can get over 10' depending on swell conditions. The surf at Playa Dominicalito, a 10 minute walk down from our villa, is ideal for learning with waves to 5+ ft. depending on swell conditions. Playa Hermosa, located about 10 km south, is also very popular. Boogie boarding is widely enjoyed at these beaches, although the rip tides at Playa Dominical make it unsafe for inexperienced swimmers during low tide.
Area Birding: Costa Rica is only about the size of West Virginia, yet has more than 830 species of birds. If you are a serious birder, Costa Rica is the pinnacle adventure. The owners are life-long birders and can help you with resident guides so that you will spot many of the 350 species in our immediate area. If you are driving to Dominical from San Jose, we can also tell you where you will have a good chance of seeing the Resplendent Quetzal along the way.
One note of caution about Villa Solo Bueno - the Chestnut Billed Toucans might interrupt the occasional siesta as they communicate with each other in the trees above.
Area restaurants : There are dining options in the area to suit every pallet and budget; From funky surfer shacks that serve a great breakfast on the Dominical beach to more upscale French/Canadian, Italian and fresh seafood restaurants serving fabulous fresh food al fresco style. A list of our favorites is kept in the villa for your reference and our on-site concierge can make the reservations, if needed.

Why Catherine or Chuck Lundberg chose Dominical
Our Costa Rica adventure began with our youngest son and his 1st grade animal report on poison dart frogs. He soon discovered Costa Rica not only had dart frogs, it also had monkeys and zip lines. He convinced himself and us it was a magical place (which it is). After two years and several trips traveling throughout Costa Rica we settled on Dominical because of the sheer beauty combined with access to adventures like surfing, white water rafting, zip lining and horseback riding. Our villa is easily accessible but with a green belt behind and to one side, is serene and full of animals activity.

The property is in great shape and has a tremendous view. Very comfortable for our family of 4. The location is close to several beaches, restaurants, and shopping. Olmer, the concierge, was attentive, yet gave us our space. Wonderful trip!
The view from the house is key to this property. We enjoyed watching the birds and monkeys in the mornings and the surfers later in the day.
The house is spacious enough for two couples with a nice outdoor area. The pool is nice we swam in the morning and the evenings which was refreshing. You do need a car and would say a 4 X 4 as the road to the house is steep and quite rough.
The house supplies drinking water and basic toiletries to get through the first couple of days (shampoo, hand soap). Depending on your time of arrival you will want to pick up some items such as coffee.
Olmer our concierge was very helpful and responded quickly to our minor concerns. We enjoyed the huge pineapple the owners brought us the best we had! We enjoyed this location very much!
Incredible views and wonderful stay
5 adults / 3 nights in Villa Solo Bueno before we headed north to Manuel Antonio.
The villa is well equipped and very comfortable. There is seating on the veranda outside where we had our morning breakfast enjoying this phenomenal view and beautiful surroundings. There is 1/2 bath on the first floor and the bedrooms are located downstairs, nicely sized and each has its own balcony with sliding glass doors. The first bedroom has two twin beds, the second bedroom has a queen bed, each has their own very generously sized bathrooms equipped with a huge shower. There is a daybed in the vestibule outside the bedrooms which would be better suited for a child or a shorter adult. The fifth adult with us is a tall man so this daybed wasn't ideal for him, but Olmer was able to provide us with an air mattress that he used in the living room. Unfortunately, he had to blow it up several times during the night because it deflated. For that reason, realistically, I think these rentals are better suited for four adults rather than five adults, unless an air mattress is ok for you, or four adults and a child/teenager. But the villa itself is generously sized, you never felt as if you were in anyone's way, and the pool on the website appears small but it's actually generously sized and you can comfortably fit five adults in the pool without being crowded. You will need a 4x4 to get up the hill to the villa, and it's well worth the views. The grounds are gated with security personnel at the entrance and at night you get a gate code for entry if you decide to drive to Playa Dominicalito in the evenings. There are boogie boards available, beach towels, fins, and I HIGHLY recommend taking a drive just a bit south to Playa Ventanas. OMG - it is one of the most stunning backdrops I've ever seen on a beach. There are mini-caves to explore on land, the waves are decent to swim in (take the boogie boards, they're a lot of fun to play with and ride the waves back to shore), it's safe, you pay a couple bucks for parking and your vehicle is secure and there are vendors on the beach where you can purchase ice cream or refreshments. There are long caves filled with water where you have a window on the other side out to the ocean, very very cool. If you want specific directions, head to Tortilla Flats and ask for Kenny... he will give you written directions but it's easy to find. Grocery stores that way too. We loved it! We would stay here again
Thank you for your lovely review. We traveled to Costa Rica many times over the course of 2-3 years before deciding on the Dominical area for our vacation home. We truly feel it is the most beautiful area in the country... "where the mountains meet the sea".
I believe this may already be specified in our listing details but the day bed is only 60" in length, suitable only for a child or very small adult. Perfect for our family including three boys, ages 15, 13 and 9 at the time of our purchase.
Beautiful home and location
We really enjoyed our stay. The view is incredible and the location is beautiful. The boys enjoyed searching for 'Charlie' each morning...He was the lizard who often could be found sunning himself at the end of the driveway. We rented a 4x4 as advised by the owner and is a must as the dirt road up to the house is very steep.
The villa had incredible ocean views! We really enjoyed our outside time at this villa...and our son loved the pool. The villa was very musty/moldy smelling to the point that we had to air our suitcases/clothing out when we returned home. The villa was not equipped with soap for showers, dish soap, toilet paper, paper towels etc. We were very disappointed that after traveling 14 hrs to get to the villa, we had to venture out the next morning to provide these things for the villa. When we asked the management company in charge if it was our responsibility to stock the villa, we were given 2 rolls of toilet paper. So frustrating and unacceptable. Furthermore, although being told when we checked in that the owner preferred the guests used the bottle water provided for drinking, we were not alerted to the risks of using the tap water to brush our teeth or wash fruit /vegetables as the water coming out of the faucets was untreated RIVER water!!!! As a result, we all ended up sick. Furthermore, we booked the villa based on it having daily maid service. That did not happen, we had to go to the office and coordinate cleanings (we were told we were only scheduled for 3 cleanings in 12 days by the management company). We love the Dominical area and plan to return, just not to this villa unfortunately.
It is indeed a huge disappointment to read our first unhappy review. We truly treasure the phone calls, emails and notes of appreciation from guests who share they experienced one of the best vacations of their lives while staying in our villa. Indeed, we enjoy a high percentage of return guests each year.
We corresponded a few times prior to your trip and had you let us know of your disappointment during your stay, we would have corrected any issues immediately. We were only an email away.
I was glad you wrote the bottled water was brought to your attention by Raul, your concierge. Our community runs on well water, which we drink and cook with routinely. Occasionally, a pump breaks or the demand from guests in other villas, accustomed to a limitless supply of piped city water, overwhelms our limited supply of well water. For this reason, we supply bottled water for our guests.
Villa Solo Bueno enjoys daily maid service Monday through Friday and this service is included in our rate, not as an additional charge. Housekeeping replaces toilet paper and paper towels in addition to general housekeeping duties during their visits. Our property management company indicated you did not wish to have daily maid service when you checked in. They confirmed the maids were low on paper supplies when they serviced the villa, but that management later delivered these items. We have a cache of toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, soap) in the maid’s closet, restocked during our February stay, 3 weeks prior to your arrival. I cannot explain why these were not set out for your family or why the villa was musty. Dominical is a tropical location, but your visit was in the dry season, our a.c. units are operational and the villa was not musty during our February stay.
Thank you for your kind words over the phone on our view, the quality of linens, the plunge pool, Raul’s courtesy toward you and the beauty of the Dominical area. It is indeed a very lovely spot. We are very sorry your time there did not meet your expectations.
My wife and I celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary and Villa Solo Bueno was spectacular. Great house, pool, patio and balcony. Monkeys and other wild life to see all around the house. Binder in the house was very helpful, educating us about the house and many things to do in the area. I highly recommend this property.
With soaring secondary growth trees overhead and fabulous views of the Pacific 100 meters below, Villa Solo Bueno is built on a ridge in the Fila Costena...where the mountains meet the sea. Now that the Costanera highway (the Hwy 1 of Costa Rica) is complete, we are a quick 30 minutes south of Quepos, where Manuel Antonio National Park is located. We enjoy the natural beauty of our famous neighbor, but travelling south you will find a laid back, much more authentic Costa Rica. Centrally located, the Dominical area is the perfect base for exploring Manuel Antonio National Park, Ballena Marine National Marine Park, Hacienda Baru and the Osa Peninsula ('the most biologically intense area on the planet' as cited by National Geographic). At Villa Solo Bueno you will truly come to understand the meaning of the words, Pura Vida. Other Activities: surfing, white water rafting, horseback-riding, deep sea fishing, birding, wild life guided hikes, boogie boarding
