Space 400 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

A once in a lifetime opportunity for a holiday of solitude and nature. The perfect spot for a writer to complete his novel, a painter to create new work and inspirations. Listen to the sound of complete quiet at night and enjoy the sky like you've never seen it before. Truly the best of both worlds, extreme solitude, serenely oak studded and teeming with California wildlife and 360 views. Yet, also, just an easy 20 minute country drive to any activity the Monterey Peninsula offers.

If you are on a deadline and require complete quiet, we can arrange meals, tea, coffee, whatever you need brought in. Leave it completely up to us. There is an artist studio on site, so a painter, or a sculptor can explore alone, or with the help of an important, established abstract painter. Guided tours on horseback or foot along the oak studded hills of John Steinbeck's Pasture of Heaven alone. See Castle Rock and several other extraordinary landmarks made famous in Steinbeck novels. If you are a car or motorcycle racing enthusiast, Laguna Seca Raceway is just minutes away. As is the beautiful coastline of Carmel, Monterey, and Big Sur.

This state of the art modern cottage is abundant in charm and quiet and restoration. Yoga and Spa services available by appointment on the private patio. Bring your partner, your best friend, your mutt, your favorite new book, your telescope, leave with true peace of mind and real purpose..... For current weather updates look to Carmel Valley weather. If you're visiting during the peak summer months, please know it is HOT up here.

About The Owner

I am an established abstract painter and mother of 4 grown daughters, a four time cancer survivor, a horse enthusiast, a hiker and enjoy the outdoors.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Carmel Valley

It is a guest house on our home property. I am drawn to the spectacular natural surroundings. Oak tree clusters, green fertile pastures, strident rock formations, and the rich California history of this area.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the quiet, the many things to do in this extraordinary area, the beautiful scenery, and weather, the gardening, bird watching, and the star gazing.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Beautiful, quiet, inspirational, bucolic, a real John Steinbeck influenced week of sleep ins, and hiking and fresh air and warm temperatures. This spot is a bird watcher's paradise. Hawks, Owls, California bluebirds, doves, wild turkey, all at your back door. Magical. We will be back.

This place is Heaven!!!

  • 5 of 5

I am a writer and I cannot explain in words how beautiful it is here, how quiet, how restorative, and just how kind the home owners are. A Perfect 10...all the way around. I will be back when I have to complete another project. Or simply just to do nothing.

perfect landing for Monterey jazz festival

  • 5 of 5

An excellent place to relax and enjoy the stars at night, the birds during the day ( great horned owl in the evening). We attended the Monterey Jazz Festival and it was the perfect spot to enjoy the down time from all the business of the festival. The little rental home is a beautiful reflection of who resides near by. Thoughtful, cozy and comfortable.

Absolutely Perfect Guest House!

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful guest house is the perfect place to stay when visiting Monterey, Big Sur, Laguna Seca, and Carmel by the Sea. The owner has put so much time, energy, and creativity into creating an awesome environment for her guests--all the little details were so welcoming and made you want to explore every nook and cranny. The guest house is filled with books/movies and the outdoor patio is rich with tables, chairs, lounge spots, and even an outdoor bed. Everything you need is here for you-- coffee/ tea for the morning, lotion, wipes, olive oil, a guitar, you name it and it's here!

The owner gave great advise for spots to eat and things to do without being intursive on our privacy. She also seems like an amazing person. Some of her art work is displayed in the house and it is absolutely breathtaking. The property will take your breath away too, so much so that words won't describe it, so you have to see for yourself.

My boyfriend and I were celebrating our engagement on this trip and it was perfect for a young couple, but also perfect for people of all walks and great for kids too!

Thanks for a great stay and we hope to return, maybe for our honeymoon:)

Wonderful, Relaxing and Unique

  • 5 of 5

This is off the well worn path just enough to add a little adventure and spice to the mix. My wife and I also had our 3 and 1 year old kids in tow. Janet and family were all extremely kind and enjoyable to talk with, not to mention accommodating. There are no worries when you arrive. The scenery and atmosphere immediately immerse you in a different lifestyle and gives you a taste of ranch living. My son loved meeting the horses, dogs and trampoline and exploring around. It couldn't be more peaceful. Being a guitar player, Janet managed to find and dust off one laying around which allowed me an amazing evening of wine, guitar, moonlight and shooting stars. Memorable and a perfect ending to our last night. No one wanted to leave, but alas coming back to reality was unfortunately required. Highly recommended!

VERY relaxing and homey

  • 5 of 5

Do you ever walk into a place and just feel at home? That is what it is like here. We had so many plans to go here and there but the place grabbed hold of us and we spent more time at the house than we did out and about. The aquarium in Monterey is a personal favorite, and we managed to make it there, but our plans to have dinner out just fizzled as we thought about going back up on the hill and enjoying the quiet. We sat out on the patio and read to our hearts content with occassional visits from the dogs coming by for a pet or to lie down in the shade. We looked up from our books to see crows dive-bombing a red tailed hawk. The views were breathtaking, and the night sky was spectacular with the Milky Way showing up so clearly.

Inside, you are surrounded by art and creativity. There is an energy here that is palpable and to me turning on the TV or computer would have been a disruption. We cooked or heated up our own meals and all the cooking items and utensils we needed were there. I packed a coffee grinder and my own coffee but found that those items were already stocked. Also, I sometimes have problems sleeping away from home, but the bed was comfy and I had no trouble here at all!

Janet and Tim have gone to great lengths to make sure that your stay is comfortable. I am inspired to make some changes to my own outdoor area to make it more cozy and inviting - little details - surprising arrangments.

Thank you for offering this lovely space for us to enjoy!
